Negotiating a new phone contract

I'm currently on a 24month contract $29($180 included value) per month with vodafone.

About a month ago got a call from vodafone, saying that my contract is about to expire and was wondering whether i would like to a new contract. They said they were able to offer me a galaxy
ace
(person tried to convince me that it was a better phone than the S2. Didn't watch to get into an argument about S2 being a better phone etc)
on a $29 per month for 24 months contract. Asked whether i could get the S3 instead of the ace and would have to pay $10-15 extra per month( can't remember exact amount).
Eventually he lowered to $27 per month on 24 month contract with the galaxy ace. I said i would think about it and call back.

So i guess using this idea of what vodafone would offer me, can anyone give me advice and help on looking for a new contract+ phone

My preferences/ usage:

no iphone
never had a problem with vodafone connection ( must be the only person in Australia), don't mind changing networks though
don't use all my credit, $180 value is more than enough
battery life quite important
leaning towards S3

    Ask for retention or upgrades team. Say that u want the free GS3 4g deal on $30 cap which they had last week or u r leaving to another carrier.

    Are happy to keep going with your S2 ?
    You can always go prepaid and then upgrade the s2 when you are ready
    Downside upfront cost for the phone
    Upside change plan when you want and no nasty bills
    I currently on boost and been happy.
    Check few of the prepaid second level resellers
    Pity Redbull mobile not anymore they resell Vodafone.

    I'm on same $29 plan which is good value.
    5 months ago I was in same boat as you.
    Was after Sony Xperia SP which was on $40 plan at that time I wanted for $29.
    Vodafone store or call centre wouldn't negotiate (multiple tries).

    Then found same phone on Virgin Mobile $30 plan, highlighted that and managed to get on $29 plan free phone.

    For you don't rush into signing contract, keep looking for deals.
    Also try Mo's store some times they can negotiate better deals with Vodafone.

    Vodafone is not like what they used to, they don't really negotiate anymore.
    I am with Crazy Johns and just off contract end of last year. They called me in Sept last year offered me Galaxy Ace on $30 plan I told them to jump and just prior to my contract finished they offered Galaxy S3 4G on a $30 plan with $60 rebate on a 24 months contract that worked out $2.50 discount per month I asked for better deal because my contract have 3 phones and we spend approx $100 per month with then, they said this is the best deal take it or we will shut down the network. I told the operator I been through this with Orange, Three etc you can't just shut down the network. So I am looking for a better deal with someone else.

    That sales guy is a massive flop. There's no way the Ace is better than the S2
    From ram & cpu alone, seems the s2 runs laps over it.
    So best is just keep the phone and join the $20 tpg plan or something similar.

    I was busy with work and forgot to call them.
    They eventually called me and I got the S3 on 24th month plan on $28 per month. The same thing as superbass but $2 more off per month. So I'm pretty happy with that.
