Just saw that Vodafone is having Samsung Galaxy S II back to $0 again on $29 CAP. Last time it was on $29/month was just before Christmas, and the price climbed back afterwards. Yes I know some people would wait for SGS3 which would hopefully be sometime next month, but meanwhile here's one of the best Android phone out there.

Minimum cost over 24 months is $696.

  • w0www.. tempted to get a second phone now…
    and get 10% off..

    • so it will be $626.4 after 10%. Can you still get it if you on thru buckscoop and get the cash back also!

      anyone know!

      • +1

I think the coupon code on the site itself does not affect affiliation cashbacks so yes — in theory you can use Buckscoop or StartHere to get the cashback. However, there's no guarantee that the cashback networks won't loose tracking…

        • Yes. I bought it in December with 100 dolar credit coupon code and $200 cash back from starthere(due to special promotion by vodafone in december).
Got cash back last week. so finally got 300 dollars credit.

        • oh damn.

i didnt get the 200$ from starthere

can I still apply for it?

        • That promotion was in December. But I got the payment after 2 months from starthere.
Also Vodafone staff does not know anything about cashbacks offered by other sites like starthere or buckscoop, etc.

        • +1

          thanks for the reply.

          i checked out starthere.

next time i get a phone i should purchase it through their links so i get some cash back.

200$ off, and another 100$ off from the online coupon is a great deal for this phone.

so within 2years you only pay $396

thats a BARGAIN for the sgs2!!!
          great job.

        • Yes. Thats what ozbargain is all about. You can squeeze the deal itself by the experience of other members :)

I will recommend to use starthere, as I have almost got around $400 of cash back from vodafone, dell, Dick smith and Dominos.

    • 10% off?

    • If you create an account with them , add this to your basket and then don't proceed to check out,
After a while they send you an email with a code giving you a special offer ,
      25 or 50 $ off..

Worth a try if you are getting one anyway.

  • +10

24 months contact :-) after that, it wont call, it wont write…

    • +11

It's vodafone; it won't call during the 24 months either.

      • seriously that bad?
im using virgin(optus) and my connection keep dropping out, sometimes mute like my friend put me on hold, but in fact she cant hear anything at all too. just 15mins call and i have to recall around 3 times. And 3G sometimes slow sometimes fast, recently quite often showing "E" i believe it is roaming i think as it deduct my credits when i browsing during "E". sometimes even no reception at all.. Was about to try vodafone…guys any suggestion which is the best network with best price?

        • Mate, I just literally got off the phone after 3 hrs of complaining. They're giving me a new HTC Sensation XL and a Samsung S2 for my mum. Never in my life have I had a message "not sent" until I switched to Vodafone. Whenever I get a call, I don't bother picking up. I have to go walk outside before re-dialing them. Every single conversation I've had in my house has cut out before two minutes. It's ridiculous.

I would say value for money would be 3, since most people don't realise, but they use Telstra's network (at least, they did when I was on 3 a few years back). Their prices seem to be at Voda/Virgin/Optus level, and not Telstra, which is in a tier of it's own. That said, I've heard heaps of complaints about 3, and I don't know whether they still accept new customers. They barely have any phones in stock.

        • -1

3 and Vodafone merged back in 2009. 3 uses the Vodafone network.

  • 24 months is too long for something about to be superceded! would take it on a 12 month contract though. if I wanted a new phone now it would be the Nexus, little more future proof.

  • Just saw a Vodafone advert during the cricket and they are still advertising it as $5 per month for the SGS2.

  • wow, lots of cheap stuff these days~!

  • This phone is excellent. However, don't expect a good battery life. It's very average. But you can buy a larger battery from Samsung that helps. About $50 on ebay.

    • +4

Battery life is no worse than the iPhone….

This is the best Android phone imho, and perfect for iPhone escapees like me. Good riddance!

Galaxy S2 with HTC Sense would be the most brilliant thing to have happened in Androidworld, but you can't have it all can you?

    • I have this phone and on average use it can last more than 16 hours

    • +2

it has a bad battery life IF you have crap loads of widgets and don't know how to clear the memory of background apps.

    • You can get the genuine extended battery from Telstra or JB here. More reliable than getting from Ebay. Also at $50 and it's worth it :)

    • Bought 2 batteries and charger pack from ebay - Anker brand (around $17). Bought it after lots of people reviewed it on xda forum saying it was very good. Been using it for past 4 months without a hitch: 1 in phone, 1 in charger, and 1 as emergency. Never have to leave phone in charger is the best benefit for a low $16 cost. Also the Anker batteries advertise (and actually have) slightly but noticeable more life than the one you get with the phone.

  • Can three customer get this phone with $0/month on mobile device now? Called a few days ago, it is said $10 minimum spend +$5/month mobile.

    • +1

Three customers get better than what a new Voda customer will - if you know how to haggle….

      • used to be the case,
not any more,, they are pushing every one to VF

  • Another $100 cashback from Buckscoop as well when you go through Buckscoop link.

    http://www.buckscoop.com.au/forums/showthread.php?t=32005

Brings price down to minimum $596 over 24 months.

  • Anyone know if this is available in-store as well?

    • Not at the moment. I suspect this is an online only deal.

  • +2

Samsung S III is coming soon, so they want to clear their stock

    • THEN you may well see this coming available on an affordable 12 month plan.

      • -1

I am surprised it is not already on a 12mth plan, the GS3 is on the verge of being announced. I would not be getting an S2 on 24 month contract at this stage.

        • +1

You need to judge everything 'as is' - there is always another thing around the corner.
When Galaxy S3 comes out it will more likely be on like $59 cap. Therefore if $30 is your limit getting the Galaxy S2 is the best bet (as it will be around 2 yrs from now until Galaxy S3 comes down to that same $30 p.m. price).

        • You're missing the point. When the S3 gets released, the S2 will more than likely become available on a $29 12-month plan as opposed to the current 24 month deal.

  • +1

I want the Virgin $29 CAP with 3 months free access back

  • Anyone know if this phone is unlocked out of the box? Or do I have to get it unlocked by contacting Vodafone?

    • Phones under contract can be unlocked for free by just doing it on their website provided by the sticker on the phone box. Very fast and easy steps.

  • +9

No matter how good the phone is, $29/Mo is a complete ripoff for $180 worth of calls and 200MB calls. LC $11/Month plan gives you $1k allowance (roughly 5 times as much yet twice as cheap as voda) and 1.5G data (7.5 times as much yet more than twice as cheap?!)

    http://liveconnected.com.au/index.php/sim-only/tribe/tribe-1…

What's even worse, that voda's prepaid 30 cap offers $450 of calls and 500MB data.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/64853

    Paying of the galaxy Nexus = $510/24 = $21.25/Month

    (or) + http://liveconnected.com.au/index.php/sim-only/tribe/tribe-1… 21.25 + $11 =$32/Month

EITHER way you'll be getting a no lock in contract, a generally better network and if you choose to pay $32/Month you'll get more than 5x as much calls and 7.5x as much data.

I've negged because others need to know that the plan itself is a complete rip off, and that you really shouldn't lock yourself into a 24 month contract. This would be a good deal if Voda offered $400 calls and 5000MB data, but otherwise not.

    No deal.

    • I agree $29 is good for phone that sells above $650 as the contract kind of become interest free credit. But VF will never offer a $650 on the $29 plan.

But many people just want a phone and don't want tp buy outright then these $29 plan will fit those customers well. Just have to keep watching your usage.

    • It's a good deal.
I can tell you Optus $29 cap is also $180 of credit. You've also seem to have forgotten that the plan covers the cost of the handset. Assuming you pay 30 a month for 2 years, the cost will come to 720. Now how much is the GSII available outright? How much are you really paying for credit now?

      • I've stated it in the last comment. $11/Month for $1k credit and 1.5G data.

You can get the Galaxy Nexus for around $510/ $520 delivered equating to about $21/week for 2 years.

The GSII is available outright for just under $500.

        • Where are you getting the price for the SII outright?
I'm interested in the LC deal, but am a bit wary of buying from sites like ebay for the phone (warranty issues mainly).

      • +2

        Quick calculation:
        Kogan Galaxy S2: $499 (e.g. from Kogan).
        + $11 per month
        = over 24 months: $31.70
=$2 more a month for much greater calls/data and no lock in contract (= can change if something else cheaper).

I actually did this a few months back, but signed on to the TPG $10 cap. Other caps to investigate is Exetel and Amaysim. Also note inclusions and exclusions such as voicemail retrieval, 1800+1300 numbers, etc. etc.

        • +1

i used to be on TPG and then exetel.

the network coverage is really terrible. esp 3G. cannot get signal for data. and also when you talk on the mobile it sounds like you are talking via the internet.

          vodafone is much better.

i think vodafone is 3rd place in coverage wise.

          Telstra, Optus, then vodaphone.

LiveConnect seems to be like TPG and exetel.

        • ed, LC runs off Optus towers so it is quite good.

    • +1

      xDEFINE is right

I snapped up the Galaxy S2 when it was this price just before Christmas.

However the low value ($180 worth of calls) and low data (I'm paying $4 extra per month for an extra 700mb) mean i REGULARLY exceed my cap by a significant amount and end up paying over $33 a month.

It is simply too easy with smartphones to rattle of many texts a day and call people without hassle and this drains your calls allowance FAST!

If his maths is right (and it seems okay), it would be more economical to buy the phone outright and get on an LC plan.

I regret EVERY DAY locking myself into a contract with Vodafone for the next 24 months.

Note: I dont have any problems with their network! It's been perfect for me and I dont live in the CBD.

      • Ahhh, I understand where you're coming from.
In my personal opinion, I'd pay a bit extra to stick with a large telco like Optus rather than risk using the smaller ones. Are you a business user? Or just have heaps of friends haha? Because I'm a student and I never even get to half of my $180 cap and I've had this plan for about 8 months now.

Aside from that, will Vodafone not let you upgrade or downgrade your plan if you feel like you need more/less credit?

    • +1

data allowance is pretty poor. on optus $29 I got 250mb. live connected is the way to go, as long as you get a good deal on the phone outright.

    • VF is esp good if your friends are all on Vodafone ,
since calls to them are 100% free , unlimited…

  • I got two plans for $19/month last time, though it has been a battle getting the plan at $19 with the accounts department but otherwise it's pretty good.

You can still get another 10% off if you are an RAC member and plus 10% if you are an existing Voda customer.

    • How? By calling Voda customer care or are there any links to apply for all discounts and credits.. there are many ways to lower the cost but nothing seem to have consolidated in one post.. all are scattered..

      • One was an online order with the $100 coupon and the other by calling CC. If you are an existing Voda customer it will be a lot easier, and you can simply say that you will leave and mention relatives or friends who will do the same, and they will do their best to keep you.

  • Now with SGS II getting ICS as of March 10, even more worthwhile !!!

    • wow. that sounds good.

    • Are you sure on 10 march from vodafone?
I guess its from samsung! so for vodafone customers (not wanting to root and flash custom/samsung ROM) will take a while( may be 6 mths or so)

      • +1

It won't be released on the 10th March, it's still in testing. This is the i9100T (Telstra/Vodafone 850MHz model), not the international i9100, so the update will be released as soon as the firmware is done testing (there's a bunch of Australia-specific stuff they've got to check).

        • Hope testing is done soon by multiple testers :)

    • Really? Might have to flash back on the stock rom!

      • I flashed my Optus SGS II to a stock ROM when I first got it, the phone just seems so much nicer without all the added "extras" that Aus carriers provide.

    • +1

Vodafone are extremely slow in providing updates, you'll have to hack the phone to get ICS before the end of 2012 I bet. I was always 12+ months behind on my Nokia updates from them.

  • +2

I'm on this deal, too, and I love it. BUT only because a lot of people I know are also with Voda, which gives me free calls and what not. Otherwise, you're really not getting your money's worth.

Also, GS2 is a FANTASTIC phone. Really can't recommend it enough.

  • Not a great deal for a phone that will be outdated very soon. That $29 plan is poor value plus let's not forget it's with Vodafone with their dodgy network and disgustingly bad support.

  • Tried to combine NRMA 10% and existing customer 10%, but the rep said only one 10% can be used. But gave me 750MB data free for 6 months(I'll have to pay $5 per month for the remaining 6 months for the data). Took it since friends and family have voda and network has not been so bad(or so I hear).

  • I just don't see the point of getting a smart phone with 250MB data. Even if you becareful, it would be very easy to go over that limit just from browsing the web occasionally.
Like others have said, I would just get a phone outright and sign up with companies like LC, TPG, etc.

    • +4

250mb is plenty for web browsing and occasional map use. I use my smartphone daily and have been on a 250mb plan for years, its fine. unless you want to be watching youtube then there is really no need for a huge data plan, but it is nice assurance.

    • +4

Had smart phone for more than 3 years, and an Android user for the last 2 years. I have NEVER used more than 250MB/month. In fact for the last 12 months I hardly use more than 150MB.

I guess it's probably because I haven't commuted to work for the last 12 months. I still use my Android phone, A LOT (& my wife has to made multiple complains throughout the day). Just that I'm on Wi-Fi must of the time.

What I am trying to say is that, there is a market for high end smart phones with small amount of monthly data/call minutes. I hardly use my included minutes and never gone over the data quota, but I still like to have a powerful phone.

    • +2

At home, I use my Wifi connection. For All updates, new games or apps, I use the Wifi. On the move, I check my emails and web browsing. I have never crossed 150 MBs.

  • had anyone be able to use this deal and extra 10%discount if you already vodafone customer in the VF shop?

    • If you have an existing postpaid handset account and you add this to the existing account, you will automatically receive the 10% discount on this additional service.

Easiest way to ensure the discount is applied is to login to your account when you checkout on the online store
