  • Hey OP, you need to fix the title…i think you mean Sony.

      It's Pony, a Chinese knockoff…

I thought the 3D gimmick was over?

Firstly, it also plays 'normal' 2d stuff and is a great TV.

Secondly, 3D is very much alive. Every big release these days seems to be in 3D and there are many people who appreciate the extra immersion it adds.

To me, a good 3D image adds just as much to the experience as surround sound.

I will add though, having owned both passive and active tech, I feel for anyone who has only tried active and found it off-putting. Passive is twice as good in my opinion.

      • +1

        Definitely passive

        • Passive is also good when you have lots of friends come over, as you can use standard cinema 'Real 3D' glasses with it. Most times I've visited friends with active 3D TVs, they only have 2 sets of glasses when four people want to watch a movie, or they have four sets but there are six people wanting to watch. Fail!

I wear prescription glasses and found some awesome clip-on 3D lenses to use with passive:

Unfortunately there's precious little good 3D content (even most 3D movies at the cinema are post-converted, so they're not true 3D through and through) but I just watched Nitro Circus 3D and the Doctor Who 50th special which were amazing in 3D, plus I found a really good documentary about stunt planes flying through the Grand Canyon. Nothing much else stands out. Still waiting for my $5 copy of Jurassic Park 3D to arrive from Big W to see what that's like!

    • I recently bought a bravia w800a and I am really impressed by some of the 3D out there, I actually think it provides much better clarity than 2D, so no, I dont think it is over

  • Went past this at Costco today. I think it was ~$1550 there.

    • Which Costco was this at and can anyone confirm this as I have been looking at buying this TV as well.

worth it. The passive is really good. Had a bunch of mates over and told them to bring the real3d cinema 3d glasses they had handy. bunch of blokes infront of the tv watching starwars in simulated 3d.

  • same at radio rental.. btw I ran some motion and interlacing tests on this tv set in the store and it was the worst ever! from from the samsung and 60 inch sets tested.
Instead of drawing horizontal and vertical lines in a cube across the screen it mashed the box with horizontal lines, which means the cadence 2:3 or 2:2 did not work to well (the sony still image test on their site was good.. but I am not buying a tv to look at still images) ;)

Also some Samsung didn't even draw the horizontal lines at all just a grey box (series 7, 55 inch 7100) I was really surprised seems its meant to be at higher end TV set.

summary of the tests that it failed:

Two squares of vertical lines of FullHD and HalfHD resolution plus two squares of horizontal lines of FullHD and HalfHD resolution (10 secs) - you should be able to clearly identify each of the FullHD lines - ok
The same four squares, now moving slowly in horizontal direction (10 secs) - failed
The same four squares, now moving slowly in vertical direction (10 secs) - failed
The same four squares, now moving slowly in diagonal direction (10 secs) - failed

I wonder if those results were caused by motion-compensation and dynamic picture modes. Did you try turning of all image processing before doing those tests? My brother's Sony TV was rather unimpressive until I turned all that rubbish off. If a Bluray is mastered properly, there's no way a TV set's fuzzy logic processor can improve it. A friend's Sanyo was driving him bonkers as DVDs looked like they had paper cut-out actors in them, which seemed to float across the top of the background. After I showed him how to turn it off he loved the TV. There are a couple of articles about new TVs messing about with source material and not always improving it:

  • Same as the goodguys price, just $10 cheaper.

    How does that work?

    • Easy to understand, Its just the same, but Different.

  • JB HiFi sells it at $1996! Do you guys think JB can Price-Match for a $318 difference???

    • Remind them that they have a price match policy, not a discretion. In saying that, if it's too low, they will look for any reason to get out of it, no stock, not available in local area etc. Read their T&C and be prepared to argue your case.

  • sadly, i bought this one from TGG 2 days ago :( $10 lost…. or i can get $12 back ha

    • yep.. their price match policy guarantees it! Do it for your $12 - just don't spend $12 in fuel getting it :)
