  • Hmm…. I just done some search and found out it is 23g heavier than 'normal' S4- 130g vs 153g. Would that weight matter much?

    • It caters to a slightly different target market. Its meant to be more sturdy and water resistant, etc hence, the weight

    • +6

I have an S4 Active and the weight isn't an issue. The issue is the size. It's about 1mm larger than the S4 so none of the cases fit and the cases I've found on Ebay have so far all been crap.

      • +12

why would you still need a case when the active seems to be ruggedised?

        • -1

you can never have too much protection!

        • +2

with an attitude like that I'm sure you saw the deal for 144 condoms posted here recently?

        • +1

It's not impact protected or protected from scratches. I've scratched the crap out of the back cover and had the phone for 3 months.

Edit: and a cover gives your phone a bit of personality.

        • I would say mainly resale value but as SirF mentioned above, aesthetics too.

    • +1

      Better hit the gym then.

Free ship with code KGNPPB2B but must use PayPal.

  • +1

The camera on this one is inferior too.

    • and the gorilla glass and it's a worse screen too.

But at least you can pick up chicks by dropping it in water and making them freak out.

      It's trade off.

  • +2

I was in the market for one of these earlier this month, and went for the original S4 after finding that just about all of the specs are slightly less than the original S4, and the weight and thickness are higher. The screen isn't as nice and if I remember correctly, the main processor isn't as fast, and it is non-standard so less cases to fit etc as SirFlibbled mentioned.

So I went for the original S4, the screen is just beautiful, the camera is unbelievably good, and promised myself I'd look after it!

    • The specs I thought were identical minus the OLED screen.

I think I'd still rather get the original, but at this point, I'd rather wait for S5.

The Snapdragon 600 wasn't fast enough for my needs (Decoding 10 bit video smoothly), so I'll wait for the next gen.

      • is there new on the S5? where did you get the info that it's comming out?

        • No news… just expectation. It's likely to be something more powerful than Snap 800. That's just how the cycle goes.

A new S is released Q2, a new Note that's more powerful than the S in Q4. Then a new S more powerful than the last Note, then a new Note more powerful than the last S.

The next S should be a charm.

      • The Specs are mostly the same. It's mostly the camera, screen quality and Gorilla Glass2 not 3. Just depends on what you're wanting from a phone. If having 13 megapixel phone and need the latest and greatest screen (I can't tell the difference) then go the S4. If you've always had a fear of dropping your phone in the toilet, then the S4 active is for you.

        • How has your overall experience been with this phone or compared to your previous device?

        • +1

I had an iphone. I find the S4 more flexible but it's just inconsistent which you don't get on the iphone. For example this morning I woke up to find my phone had turned itself off last night and so my alarm went off. Why? I have no idea. It was plugged into power as well. Also today it decided somewhere between midday and 2pm to change the time while I was having lunch. I looked at my phone before lunch and it was about 12. When I looked at it again, it read 1600 when it was really 1400. Why? again no idea.

But on the brightside, going to the beach over new years and can swim with my phone.

        • I've never had that happen to any of my phones. Sounds like you got a dud unit.

        • +1

But once it happens it doesn't happen again. I'm not sure it's a dud phone rather than a quirk with Android. Only had it since September.

        • Like I said, never seen this happen on any of my Androids. I have had a phone crash on me before requiring me to hold the power button to switch it off and then reboot. But not seen a phone switch off on me unless battery died, or the time go wrong.

  • +1

Wow, nice deal - I'd consider getting it over the Nexus at that price. Personally I think it looks a lot better than the regular S4, the water resistance is a bonus. That said you won't be able to do nearly as much with rooting/roms on this phone, though that probably wouldn't be why you'd buy it :)

    • +1

Agree was considering getting Nexus 5 but went for this because of looks/water resistant/ sturdiness/ microsd.
Nexus range although very good value for money is certainly a bit fragile

      • Same, but am still undecided on this. Too much choice.

  • +1

Can this run the s4 Google edition ROM?

  • this or the $389 LG G Pro?

    • Or the Xperia Z for $429?

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126995

      • +1

don't like the Z.. specs aren't as good as these 2

    • G pro is a better choice if you are happy with Android 4.2. LG ain't planning to roll out any update for this phone in future

      • yeah not surprised with LG's lack of updates (i'm coming from an LG P990)

but CM11 nightly was released last week fortunately

    • Wouldn't a Nexus 5 For $420-470 delivered be better?

      • for raw power yes..

but i hate the idea of a non-removable battery and no micro sd card slot

  • +1

Be forewarned, you might all be Koganned

  • To hell with it… Bought.

Props to japik for the free shipping code KGNPPB2B

  • Does these come with a complimentary fire extinguisher?

    • Didn't that guy microwave his phone? Or were you thinking of a separate incident?

I know that some S4 batteries supposedly bloat up but they are replaced free of charge (as they should be).

  • +2

lol. This was in the "Phones You Should Probably Not Buy Unless You're a Fish" section at Gizmodo

    • this comment deserves a big fat LOL :)

    • can't help being skeptical about that review on gizmodo…. the nexus 5 isn't without issues (in fact, it was ridden with plenty, and google is only addressing it just few days ago, so the newer stocks may not come in as early here.)

      • The rattling power button issue and the larger speaker holes isn't exactly ridden with plenty of issues. The current speaker is fine for voice calls, just not for listening to music, who does that anyway?

        • hi, google search turns up more than that. another issue is dead pixels. :)
there's also wifi issue and battery drain issues as well… go google it!

I am looking for a new phone myself, and nexus 5 was on the list.

"who does that anyway" is just a weak justification/reasoning for a product that have design/quality issues. Would you sink $400 on a product you know that has known issues? I won't. You can take the plunge and buy the one with the faults and all, while I will wait for the updated version that has all the bugs fixed.

My point is that even though google is addressing it, it's only just being addressed in the US, probably our locale would be at the end of the queue.

        • I've got one, I am aware of the problems, every model has issues.
The RMA process is apparently easy, even though you may be without a phone for a few days.
Some people here who have received new phones have the new version with the larger speaker holes and the non-rattling buttons already.
But there is another problem with yellow screens, that goes away according to some.

By all means wait, if you can, for a perfect phone. It may eventually happen.

        • lol. don't be dramatic. I am not waiting for the perfect phone. I just want my phones to work the day I buy them, not having to waste time faffing about for RMA and shit.

early adopters like you will help people like me find out issues that would be sorted out by the time I buy the 'next revision' of the same phone model.

          that's how i roll.

      • Oh I completely agree. I would take it all with a grain of salt. I'm not in the market for a new phone. My galaxy s2 still sits me fine. I just thought it was funny.

    • That's comparing the octa core s4 though, which isn't 4g compatible here no?

  • good price.

last time my sister bought her S4 on a one-day Kogan's special, they didn't honored it
they said it was a "pricing error" and bumped the price up to the normal.

Since then, I can't be sure if a Kogan special is genuine.

  • I could have sworn that I read that the Active was meant to have the Snapdragon 800 cpu.

In any case it seems like a very good price for a very good phone.

Note though that an updated S4 (i9506) is now out in the market with Category 4 LTE and the Snapdragon 800 cpu. Currently not anywhere near this price though.

  • Could some one tell me if these are Australian stock phones or imports.

Bought a galaxy S3 from office works and they wouldn't price match as they were saying there phones are Australian stock and carry a 2 year warranty directly with Samsung, unlike some retailers which you have to return the phone to were you bought it any only carry a 1 year
    Cheers

    • Import.

    • +1

This is the exact reply I got when I mentioned price matching with online prices. I knew they are not going to do it, but what else aren't they telling me apart from the warranty thingy… e.g. would an imported phone not work in certain countries without some struggle, or would it have a certain defect associated with it?

Just an example: HK users of galaxy S4 has reported that their phone resets very often after 1 year of usage.

      • +2

yeah, my S4 started resetting after a Year of use too!

  • KGNPPB2B works free shipping for i9300 S3; prolly other phones too.

    • On one of the payment page, under your items: "Got a Promo Code? Add it here."
