  • is it bargain!!!

    • like I said, same logic applies to the M5 cashback, for me it is a bargain cause i'm getting 2 weeks off work and centrelink is paying me $1200

      • +1

or are they, i had my two weeks unpaid leave already, still yet to see payment… spent a hour in their office yesterday and they said they couldn't help me, I needed to resubmit my evidence specifically through their iPhone app, or fill out the paper form and apply all over again, apparently their website upload tool (same place I applied) doesn't link your evidence so it is still sitting as submitted awaiting evidence :(

        • Thanks. I'm just going through the process of filling out the online form. Having second thoughts now…

        • +2

I've applied and received payment successfully in November so its not unachievable. Didn't have any issues and payment was quite quick.

For the naysayers, the benefit of it is that you get to spend time with your newborn and still get some money back for it. It was good strong bonding time with her that they say is very important when a child enters the world. I personally didn't want to use up my annual leave for that time as you are very limited as to what you can do with a newborn. When shes a bit older, I'll use my annual leave to take her somewhere nice.

For my first child I took off leave without pay so its a definite bonus for me.

Agreed not specifically a bargain but still some cash in hand for those that would normally go without.

Wow, halving your income for 2 weeks - bargain!
You can't get this AND be on paid leave at the same time.

        • +3

what about casuals & part time workers? they get no leave…

not everyone earns $1200 a week?

        • do you know a lot of opportunities where you can sit and relax at home, get paid and not spend you annual/sick leave?

        • If we say the average income is roughly 72k a year, or $1400 a week gross. 2 weeks pay is $2800. You take 2 weeks unpaid leave to get your $1200. You've lost or virtually paid $1400 to sit at home for that fortnight.

        • +1

that's the average, there is people getting less than that and don't have annual leave and would like to spend xmas days at home with their newborn instead of working

        • +5

          sit and relax at home

Wait, are we really talking about parenting here?

        • +1

you're right, most new parents sit and relax at work :)

        • -2

Your comparing gross against net?? Good work :)

        • +2

A lot of businesses allow you to cash out excess leave once you're over a certain amount. For instance, take unpaid leave for two weeks, get minimum wage for those two weeks then down the track, cash in two weeks of your excess leave. That's what I'll be doing.
          Boom - free money.

        • +1

          Your comparing gross against net??

The payment is before tax. Perhaps go learn the difference between gross and net before commenting?

      • -1

Taking two weeks unpaid leave and thereby missing out on three statutory holidays seems like madness to me. HR advised me to take the unpaid leave after New Year's Day.

  • +7

Next we will see Newstart posted as a deal because one person didn't know about it…

Seriously, how is this not a forum post?

  • +1

This is not a bargain, as awesome as it may be for you. It's just a benefit some people are eligible for

    • +3

just like the M5 cashback, not everyone resides in Sydney, has a car and a e-tag! If the site has accepted the toll deal I really don't see why such a discrimination

      • Because its a federal government benefit which you are either entitled to or not. Its no different to calling Newstart a bargain "get paid not to work". Or the family tax benefit "get extra money because you have kids"

I still don't believe its a bargain but its a nice surprise for anyone entitled that didn't know they were

  • +6

Not a bargain. You have to take unpaid leave which means you are actually losing money. Sure you get 2 weeks off but for most people taking annual leave at full pay works out better.

    • +1

Yes, but i can still keep my annual leave for later

      • +1

Or you work the 2 weeks, get paid in full and keep the annual leave too. Unlike the M5 cashback, this equals less money in your pocket and therefor is not a bargain. It belongs in the forums.

        • +1

you forgot the human side of this deal: spending two weeks with your newborn

        • +2

The forum is for the human side. This is for bargains.

        • -5

don't make me repeat myself please, same logic applies to the M5 cashback deal, also your comment doesn't make sense, going to work and getting paid isn't better than relaxing at home and getting paid without wasting annual leave, i hope you get my point

        • So you believe taking time off work to care for your child is "wasting annual leave"?

Here I am doing it for years out of my pocket for what I thought were the right reasons, crazy!

Enjoy sitting back relaxing at home, not something I'd be proud of but each to their own.

        • you obviously have no clue about my personal life and how im planning to use my leftover annual leave with my newborn, just like you have no clue how I "wasted" my annual leave with our pregnancy's complications so If I was you I would be more careful before making smart@ss comments but… each to their own

    • i used it i get paid for 2 weeks and i didnt use my annual leave i will use when i need in future or on holidays. 1060 after tax, for me its a good deal stay with your new baby and get paid,

  • +1

sn't that what a few of the bargains posted here are? ie amex deals, etc. your not eligible unless you have a card

should be posted in forums, but its good new for people having a kid. ALOT of people don't know anything about this surprisingly

there is an app you can get that tells you what you are entitled too as well my wife's friend was saying (for all the housos out there)

  • +8

Maybe the title should read. Kids: $1200 off RRP. Pickup only. Eligibility criteria apply…

Edit: PS - congratulations OP and Good Luck!

    • But really, compared to the total costs of a kid it's not even 1% off :P

      • +1

yes, so please don't abuse this deal LOL!

  • should be posted as a thread in the Forum, not a bargain

  • +2

A sneaky tip for those of you not willing to go on half pay for a fortnight… Pay out a week's annual leave (or more, or less), and then take 2 weeks unpaid to be eligible for this.
Note that the 2 weeks unpaid leave MUST be Consecutive… you can't take 10 individual days off and claim the 2 weeks.

  • Yeah, as much as people should know about it, it's not a bargain…

Centrelink benefits a bargain? I don't think so.

Anyways this requirement "meet a work and income test" will (rightfully) rule a lot of people out.

Recently my girlfriend was between jobs, and I recommended she go on Centrelink whilst searching for the next. Decided to do the right thing, we'd co-habitated for about 4 years so I'd call it a de-facto relationship and declared it as such. She ended up getting rejected because MY income was too high. Kind of amazing considering I was on Centrelink for 6 years before getting my career up and running.

And you know what? They were right. My income was easily enough to support us both, but I could not spend money on as much stupid stuff. It was at least an education as to how much money I really spend, and also proved that if I were to have kids one day, I could probably afford them too.

Anyways this requirement "meet a work and income test" will (rightfully) rule a lot of people out.

Not really as the minimum requirement is 330 hrs worked in the previous 13 months (1 day per week) and 10 months of the last 13 being worked prior to taking this leave.
Or your adjusted taxable income for the previous year needs to be under $150,000.

Pretty much covers most of the population including those Ozbargainers that work 1 day a week and earn $149,999 pa.

  • Not a bargain.should be in forums.

  • Forum post, but a huge congratulations on the new baby GF!

    • +2

Thanks Animus Furandi, last thing I wanted is open a debate here. I agree with you this post is better suited in forums just like the Toll cashback deal. I have been gettting cashback for more than 3 years now(wife was using m5 at least twice a day before getting pregnant) and the cashback information is written clearly at the end of every quadrimester toll report listing all the trips eligible for cashback. Surprisingly a lot of Sydney residents had no idea about the deal and voted it as a bargain. In a similar way, this dad and partner paid leave, has only started less than one year ago so by posting it here might help a bit a few new parents who didn't know about it and might be eligible, that's all

  • Android compatible?

  • Officeworks pricematch?

    • +5

      old.

    • I will. Ill take your benefit and take 5% before giving it back to you

  • Thanks OP, bought three.

    • +3

make sure they are all yours ;)

  • With number of reports on this one I've decided to move it to the forums. However with future government subsidies as "bargains", neil is asking the community for opinions — please discuss it there.

    • +2

A bit hash. It's a benefit they are entitled to. Its not as thought they are a dole blugger living off the system. Their tax dollars went towards this too. Their tax dollars also supported other things that would never be used by themselves.

      • -3

yes, it's a benefit someone is entitled to definately. but heading off to OzBargains and posting a thread about it for the sole purpose of laying around and leaching money off the government does not contribute to productivity

we are all entitled to centrelink dole bludger payments but we don't all go and get them do we?

      • +1

don't waste your time 4agte, it's like blaiming Sydney residents for claiming cashback on the M5

    • +1

and this is a STUPID comment! your name says it all I suppose!

  • Or use carers leave for 2 weeks and get normal pay which is more than this

  • +1

I am currently on partner pay. Definitely worth taking as I've had to help my wife attend several appointments including hospitals, paediatricians, obstetrician s, medicare, medibank etc.

    • +1

Forgot to add that you can ask your rmployer to oay the difference between your normal pay and the minimum wage that centrelink provides. So essentially you can get the same weekly income.

  • +2
