M5 Motorway Cashback Refund Scheme for NSW Residents

675

Well, this can save a lot of people money. I was paying a toll and noticed this… I hardly use it, but you can get all your M5 tolls refunded. You must have a tag, and register for the Cashback Scheme.

Eligibility

To participate in Cashback you need to open an electronic tolling account, register for Cashback and pay your M5 tolls using an electronic tag.

You can only claim Cashback if:

  • You are a NSW resident.
  • Your vehicle is registered in NSW for private, pensioner or charitable use. Trips made using government or business registered vehicles (including vehicles provided as part of a salary package), leased vehicles, rented vehicles, smash repair courtesy vehicles, car dealership loan vehicles, interstate registered vehicles or any other vehicle where business usage is shown on the registration papers, for example 'business general' or 'primary producer' are ineligible.
  • You have registered for M5 Cashback with your tolling provider.
  • You have paid M5 tolls using a NSW issued electronic tag.
  • You have submitted your claim within twelve months of the close of the Cashback quarter. Claims received more than 12 months after the close of each quarter will not be accepted.

This has been around since the M5 opened! And you don't get a full refund, you get the net-GST amount back (10/11th). The other 1/11th goes to the ATO.

    • +2

TRUE Man! I cant get over this one-am still laughing -this poster must have just got his license or a recent arrival

  • -4

agree to csg001. This has been around forever, not a bargain.

    • +2

      Been around since 1997.

      • +10

SO it hasn't been posted for six months then, good to go. :)

  • +2

Good for those who didn't know, but it has always been there, maybe belongs to forums?

  • -7

this is Refund Scheme, not a DEAL!!!

  • +2

Hope my memory serves me correctly. The story was like -the government at the time of pre election promised voters from western Sydney a 'free way' to ease the traffic to the city. After winning the election, freeway becomes motorway ie tolls are to be paid. To avoid angry mobs on this back flip, this cash back scheme was invented to allow residents to get 'free' travel by jumping over hoops for a refund. Which government? Let's see if you are a typical voters
    - with short memories.

    • sorry, I only know "Which bank" but not "Which government". I guess I have 50-50 chance to pick the right one here but at the end of the day, they both look the same for me … wasting our tax money.

On another note, I hope one day, one of our fellow ozbargainer becomes our prime minister, I am sure we will pay off our national debt in no time (along with a few junk/impulse projects of course )

      • Well which of our ex-Premiers has a nice cushy job with that bank? ;P

  • +2

not a bargain .. if u use the m5 enough, you'd already know about it.

    • +3

Look at the comment below. You may learn something.

  • +6

    Thanks OP!

I had no idea and have been using the M5 quite a bit over the last few years… Could of saved hundreds!

    • +2

You can go back and apply for previous quarters. I don't know how long the 12 month limits have applied but a few years ago my brother claimed 3 years worth in one hit. All you need is your old tolling statements

EDIT: I'm aware of the current 12 month rule but that is only recent. It never used to be like that so there is a chance you can still get the last few years rebate back. Would need to look into it further

      • +1

Yeah nah, they bought in the 12 month limit suddenly, and made it effective immediately, to screw the procrastinators (like me - just had a baby, couldn't find the time for the unnecessary paperwork). Obviously dishonest, and I complained, but they wouldn't refund the older ones.

        • you can do it online now, and it calculates everything automatically so you just keep clicking next.

got mine back a month ago, much needed money just in time for xmas

        • "Yeah nah"

          /facepalm

  • +7

how about Tourist Refund Scheme, baby bonus, First Home Owner Grant scheme, family benefits and etc?

    • +2

      baby bonus,

Too late for that one. Mark that as expired.

While we are at it. Cash for clunkers, Tax subsidy on Windmills, Free Home insulation,

    • -3

Those are widely publiced in the news or forums. Maybe due to the age of this cash back scheme, a lot of people do not know about it.

    • +2

If enough people think it counts as a bargain, why not?

We're here to get value, no split hairs about what should technically constitute a bargain and what shouldn't.

You act like allowing this bargain will start us down a slippery slope into OzBargain becoming OzTodayILearnedAboutTheDole. I think if someone posts some govt cashback that's actually well known or too niche, making the deal useless, people won't upvote it. Simple as that.

  • +5

Well it aint news to most I'd assume, but then again it's brilliant for all those who didn't know. So what's with all the negs? You guys are clearly negging the post, not the deal.

    • +5

Exactly. Neg the deal, not the post. Regardless of if people already know about this, it helps others save money. Isn't that what ozbargain is about?

      • +4

Well back in the good ol' days, those negs were valid. It's an old and on-going cashback scheme, and would've been moved to the forums.

The allowance for reposting of deals after a certain amount of time is for good deals that could be assumed to have ended to resurface and re-inform. If this isn't moved to the forums then those birthday deals from various stores would be plastered all over the deals page every few months…

  • I don't use the M5 much but have been using this scheme since I started driving…. I started only this year… Thanks for posting it will be useful for those who do not know. Also you can now do it online… No more sending a form to Wagga (from memory)

  • as stated above it has been around for a long time for both m4 and m5. m4 is now free anyway….you get back full amount minus Gst…

  • -1

    M2 M7 why not follow?

    • +1

They should at least have a price matching policy, if not 5% beating guarantee. Greedy highway companies!

    • bcs this was governments scheme to buy western sydney votes…

  • Anything like this for QLD?

  • GST is not refundable in this case, so not totally free.

  • -3

WTF dude, this has been going on for over 5 years, have you been living in a cabbage patch?

    Im keen to negative this

    • -1

5 years? It's been around since the 90's.

Anyone that doesn't know about it by now must be a total moron.

      • +1

I think you've mistaken the M5 Cashback Offer with the M5 Construction.

I was referring that the m5 Cashback offer has been around for over 5 years

        • +2

I haven't mistaken anything, the cashback scheme has been around for 17 years. The M5 was built in 1992.

"The NSW Government introduced the M4/M5 Cashback Scheme on 1 January 1997. Cashback allows NSW residents to claim back the value of tolls (excluding GST) paid while using privately registered vehicles on the M4 (for tolls paid before 16 February 2010) and M5 motorways."

    • +1

M5 don't exactly publicly advertise that you can get your money back, there are so many people that don't know about this..

      • -1

Wrong. When applying for any etag there is a checkbox "Do you want to particpate in the M4/M5 cashback scheme".

  • -1

It's not a bargain. Only those who have etags can be eligible and ppl who paid without etag can not get a refund. Its merely a bonus for those who have etag and cashback is offered to encourage drivers to get etag. It should move to forum.

  • +2

I've used this for years but only originally became aware of it through a friend. Its not that widely publicised. It also applied to the M4 until the tolls stopped on that road.

As mentioned you get it all back apart from the GST. They send you a statement every 3 months and you lodge a claim. This has recently been made easier as it can be done online.

Worth a post as I'm sure a lot of people may not know about it.

    • I've noticed a cashback form in every single etoll statement i've ever received. Not sure how you could have missed it

      • Plus when applying for any etag there is a checkbox "Do you want to particpate in the M4/M5 cashback scheme".

        • I didn't initially bother with an etag becuase I am not that frequent a user. I got one after I was told about the cashback scheme.

    • Why is there a "NO should not be posted" option outside of "Post as a Deal / Forum / Other"?

  • I am not sure if I understand this:
"Your vehicle is registered in NSW for private, pensioner or charitable use. Trips made using government or business registered vehicles…"

    Looks contradiction?
If I have my car for private use, how would I have the same as government, business registered?

    • registered for private is different from using your company/govt registered car for private use

  • -2

    This isnt a bargain…

What's next? rebates from centerlink? tips for tax?

    • +4

Or you could stop criticizing other peoples deals, post at least one yourself, and than come back and criticize when you at least have a deal to your name…

There are a fair few people that did not know about this deal, hence it made front-page, hence it has 50+. The ones negging are the same ones that contribute nothing to OzBargain.

  • -1

Thumbs down for encouraging more people onto this car-park-of-a-motorway. It's already clogged, no need to promote it further.

  • Been there forever really.

  • -3

Not a bargain. Also, it's been around for yonks

brb making post about First Home Saver Account grants offered by government
brb making post about First Home Owner Grants

  • I'm + voting this one. A NSW driver for 13 years, I'd forgotten about it.

  • Here's one people may have forgetten.. Get 10c for every can returned in Adelaide.. AWESOME DEAL..

    • +1

When did it go up from 5c?

  • So if I have an e tag account but only recently ticked that "I will be claiming the m5 rebate" box, how far back can I claim, if at all?

    • "You have submitted your claim within twelve months of the close of the Cashback quarter. Claims received more than 12 months after the close of each quarter will not be accepted."

      • Maybe I'm in the minority, but "close of the cashback quarter" would, I assume, normally refer to something that is finite. In this case, since the cashback is ongoing, that line confused me a little.

Instead of quoting, it would have been much more helpful if you had translated into more laymans terms, because evidently you understand it much better than I do.

        • A quarter refers to a 3 month period - it doesn't matter whether it's ongoing or not. Income tax never stops being payable yet we have tax years.

  • -2

What is next? Free to use M4? *sigh

  • +2

THANKYOU !!!! I just claimed back $56 dollars for my parents who aren't aware of this rebate !!! DEFINITELY WORTH POSTING and don't worry about the haters.
