The fast ferry is A LOT better than the old smelly slow ferry. Also air-conditioned. The fast ferries have upper decks that are open, it is also licensed to serve alcohol.
Downside… that price isn't much of a saving if you are travelling against peak traffic because price is $5.50 normally anyway.

For me personally… it is nice to sit on the roof of a ferry and have a cold beer sometimes travelling through the Sydney Harbour once in a while. I usually travel the slow one though to reduce weekly costs.
Oh crud got confused with Sydney fast ferries.. (same route). But they run at different times so can catch either. Woops. Guess it is good during afternoons then.

haven't been on the fast ferry before, but once the old ferry (green) took 1.5 hours :(
I don't recommend the fast ferry as a sightseeing experience. The windows are covered with salt and therefore the view is crap.
