Kinda weird seeing an airline offer stuff like this, wondering if its because they have alternative options for domestic transport so they actually have to be competitive in the industry…

    • +8

It's being underwritten by the Japanese government to encourage tourism away from the larger cities and more into regional areas

The Shinkansen can be quite expensive, but I feel it would be more convenient than transiting through an airport.

      • This!! Especially when you have kids.

      • +3

The new luggage rules makes trains a little less desirable. But your right, if the price is similar then train is so much less stressful.

Compared flying to aomori vs train and it was around $60 cheaper to fly and train was about 20mins longer overall, but zero stress and the train was 1000x more comfortable.

Same compare for Sapporo had the flights significantly cheaper and shorter due to shinkansen not going whole way.

        • +3

there is luggage service in japan that can hold/send to your next hotel. it was quite cheap as well. 15 kg medium luggage for $25 from sapporo to tokyo.

and it actually can arrive within 2 days.

          • +5

@penting: Are you even doing Japan right if your bag only weights 15kg :)

            • +3

@Nalar: 15kg barely covers the tax free haul from Don Quijote.

              • +4

@Clear: Barely covers the wife's Choco Pie, Melty Kiss and Galbo provisions.

      • +2

Yeah it really depends on how far you're going. If just Osaka/Kyoto etc the train probably works out better overall (much more convenient, no slow transit in/out of city centres, no need to be there early for baggage/check-in, nice views).

If going any further north or south then definitely flying is going to be a better deal.

        • +2

We did Jetstar between Osaka/Tokyo, was $79 each way, or for memory $250 on the train. Definitely flying was cheaper and faster for us at the time.

          • @BatmanAU: Yeah that's a good deal, but you also should be including transit cost/time to/from the airports as well.

If you got Haneda to Osaka domestic that might not be too bad. Narita and KIX are not ideal for a short hop.

      • +2

Yeah big +1 for that, I will pick the shinkansen every time over a plane unless absolutely necessary, even the simplicity of taking out my laptop and doing some work whilst in transit, its so much hassle on a plane its borderline pointless.

    • +1

Because there’s a big chance you won’t use it as their national rail system is very, very good.

  • -1

This is standard on most ticketing conditions, you just pay the tax…

  • This is a good deal! If traveling to Kyoto, it takes nearly 3 hours to get there by train from Tokyo Haneda airport, and $150. Connecting flight would probably take similar time including airport wait but free, and you can have a rest at the airport lounge.

    • +1

I reckon it's still worth doing the trip by train once, I quite enjoyed it. That was before the recent JR pass price hike though, so probably changes the maths.

  • ANA does this too.

  • +7

I've used this extensively with ANA. It's a good way of getting to Sapporo as the Shinkansen only goes to the bottom of Hokkaido and then you'll spend all day transferring on different local trains.

I recommend flying to Fukuoka too. The Kyushu region is stunning and there's plenty of good onsen towns around.

  • If I already booked my tickets back in June for flights in Jan 2025, am I out of luck?

    • +2

To ensure eligibility, customers must book a JAL international flight and a corresponding domestic flight together at the same time. Separate bookings for domestic flights are not eligible.

  • +1

Remember free wifi on ANA and JAL - for an hour, unless you are flying business class. However, it's per device, not per seat.

    • +1

Good enough for a quick sensual relief in the privacy of your plane's toilets.

    • Really? Didn't work for me this year. I think I could connect to a wifi network but it didnt give me network access

  • The domestic flight needs to be taken at same time as the international flight arrival? Or is there a time window?

    • It's a connecting flight that you take the same day. You could take it 2 hours after you land in Tokyo or later in the evening. Depending on the flight times available.

When booking on JAL/ANA you'll have to book under the "multi-city" option. Despite being a connecting flight I've still had to pickup my luggage when landing in Tokyo and then check in/bag drop in the domestic terminal.

    • +1

No you can take a flight any day if you pay GST for domestic flight.
connecting within 24 hours from international arrival will not need to pay GST.

No additional charges apply for travelers from other countries for the domestic segments.
      other country include Australia

  • Its great since most Australia direct flight to Japan can only reach Tokyo
years back when I was visiting Osaka I need to book a separated flight from Tokyo to Osaka

    • Connecting flight (no stop over) to Osaka,Nagoya,Fukuoka are always included.
This offer include ANY city that ANA flies also can stop over at HANEDA.

  • Only a deal IF you're already flying ANA or JAL. It's usually cheaper to fly with someone other than ANA or JAL and buy domestic tickets separately.

From experience, flying Tokyo to Hokkaido or Kyushu is ~$100 return using jetstar.co.jp. Granted thats when the Yen was weak, but just looking at prices now, you can find flights for ¥4700 one-way to Hokkaido in Dec. Theres other budget carriers like Peach too.

    • If it was a choice of say American airlines or British airways vs Jetstar, it would be a fair comparison.

But JAL and ANA economy class is extra wide and extra space between seat.

So compare jetstar "business class" or the minimum jetstar with an exit row seat.

Not sure why there is a sudden surge in Japan interests. Japan has seen an unprecedented high levels of tourists and are overwhelmed. Japan is now over crowded with tourist so don't know why people still want to go.

      7-11 egg sandos

      • We have that on Coles… Coles egg sandos

        • Thats like parents saying "we have XX at home"

    • +3

I'd assume it's because the last 6 months has been the best the currency exchange rate has been for many years.

    • +3

lot of westerners’ exposure to Japanese culture/media is quite high, even from a young age. Pokémon, anime/manga, etc. all push people toward liking and knowing the culture.

It's also got a reputation for being clean, safe and having high standards of living so it's an ideal destination for some. The weak yen has also pushed its popularity all the way up too.

    • You aren't sure why tourists want to go to the popular tourist destinations?

      • +1

It's always been popular but only recently it has been SUPER popular. As scottySK and scrimshaw mentioned, I guess the currency played a major role in why so many people are flocking there all of a sudden.

    • Spoken like someone who's seen the trend on TY/TikTok where everyone's complaining about over-tourism in Japan…

Fun Fact: the majority tourism in Japan is domestic, something like 495 million domestic trips vs 30 million international.

~3million international visitors in August, with only ~40K from Aus.

  • To be honest, you are best just finding the cheapest flights to and from Japan and then looking into flights instead of locking yourself in to JAL. I flew Seoul to Hokkaido, then Hokkaido to Tokyo on a budget airline (Peach), both on time and domestic is pretty easy and paid about 100/120 dollars for each with luggage. Some trips like Tokyo to Osaka/Kyoto it just makes sense to use the train as it's only 2 hours from city centre to city centre. Of course if JAL is competitive when you are planning to go, certainly take up this deal. Long distance Shinkansens are expensive.

  • oooh might have to take this offer onboard and try them out

  • WTF? How long has this been running? Just flew to Tokyo on ANA and there was not one whisper of this offer…

    • +1

Since last year. ANA's newsletter sends them out nearly every week. Myself and others have posted a lot of ANA deals with it 😅

  • Last I checked economy from Sydney > Haneda was 6K for the 15th of December.

    Now it's 2K.

I booked Qantas 3 months in advance for 3K because of that. I thought prices were supposed to go UP the closer you got?!

    • I booked Qantas 3 months in advance for 3K because of that. I thought prices were supposed to go UP the closer you got?!

Not if they aren't selling seats.

  • How does this work?

Can we get return flights to Okinawa for example, or only one way domestic?

    • +1

You just go and book a flight to any domestic airport in Japan with JAL/ANA, via an agency or directly. You can check if the domestic flight is free if the cost of the ticket to your destination is the same as the ticket just to Tokyo.

  • Wish I’d known about this, need return flights Tokyo / Sapporo. Any one had luck getting a flight applied after booking?

  • Does anyone know whether you can do this when booking a return flight back to aus from Japan, as a part of one whole booking?
