Canon PowerShot SX280 $271 @ CamBuy (or $221 after Pricematch @ HN & Cashback)

50

I've been looking at this camera for a while. With the Canon Cashback promo, the deal is pretty good.

I got Harvey Norman to PriceMatch against CamBuy ($271). They offer full Australian stock and also link to the Cashback, so its not Grey Import.

If you still have the Amex Statement Credit activated, you could get additional $30 bringing it down to $191.

MOD: This deal was originally linked to Harvey Norman. As per posting guidelines for price match, link has changed to CamBuy.com.au + notes on price match at HN.

This is no doubt a good deal for a well specified camera(Digic 6, 20x optical, 1080p at 60fps etc, GPS, Wifi etc).
However there is a serious caveat that potential buyers should be aware of. When put into video mode there has been numerous reports by users of the battery depleting suddenly and the camera shutting down. One only has to go into the various camera forums to see that this has become a widespread issue with this particular model. Canon released a firmware to try and solve this specific issue but it never really worked. My advice is that if you are going to use the camera only for stills then its worth a look, otherwise if you can find the slightly older SX260HS or are willing to move up to the larger SX50HS you'd be much better off as there are known issues to report of and users have been very happy with them. Also take a look at Panasonic's competing model the TZ40 which has received solid reviews and is very well featured.

  • +1 to Fizza, its true.

  • Haven't seen that yet - have tried video and zooming and no issues. Did download the latest firmware 1.0.0.2, but my camera is already on the latest - apparently the Serial # is high enough that this particular firmware is not applicable.

Hopefully it has been addressed - not sure if the firmware fixed it or if they have done something to the mfg itself. Fingers crossed.
