Freebie for Designers, Animators & Game Makers: 10,000 Art Assets Released from Cancelled Game

1160

The developer behind the short-lived and stylish massively multiplayer online game Glitch is giving the game a second life by releasing more than 10,000 pieces of art, animation and code from the cancelled game to the public for free.

You can use them free of charge for personal or commercial purposes and they are excellently suited to all sorts of animation, design and game projects.

If you're looking for an easy way to create a 2D game, download the assets and grab GameMaker while it is still free.

Alternatively Unity have just released a whole new slew of tools for creating 2D games, you can download it for free here.

On the game's official website, developer Tiny Speck says it released Glitch's assets "in the hopes that they help others in their creative endeavours and build on Glitch's legacy of simple fun, creativity and an appreciation for the preposterous."

Tiny Speck founder and president Stewart Butterfield said the asset release includes millions of frames of animation, the world's flora and fauna, hundreds of unique characters, thousand of environmental art assets and much more.

"The team at Tiny Speck put years of work into the art for Glitch: many thousands of hours by a hugely talented team [spent] on illustration, animation, character designs, effects, avatar systems and environmental," said Butterfield. "The game didn't make it, but [we] couldn't stand the thought of all of that creative work shuttered away forever. Making it freely available to all as a public good is a worthy legacy for the project. We hope it will be useful for other creative projects, from student and artistic work to unfettered commercial use."

Glitch's assets are available for download from the game's website and GitHub under a Creative Commons CC0 "no rights reserved" license.

It a world full of avaricious corporations and their equally avaricious shareholders, it is good to see some people are still willing to share for free with the community. I am also very fond of Creative Commons, WikiPaintings and Project Gutenburg, making culture freely available to the masses rather than locked up in libraries and art galleries.

    • Well, they are sharing because the game didn't make any money … This is aweseome but they were trying to make a paid game, and there is nothing wrong with that. They didn't make this stuff just to give it away for free.

It doesn't really matter that they were originally trying to make a game to sell. What does matter is that rather than let all the assets rot they decided to set it all free.

Most IP owners would simply sit on it in the hope that one day they might be able to use it, or else lock it away because "if we can't use it then nobody can".

It really is an incredibly cool gesture and a mark of respect to the artists as well.

        • Exactly my thoughts!! Huge amounts of respect to this team, great show of character.

        Lol, this is priceless.

      • I think there are many teachers who have problems with grammar. I have a couple of primary school teacher friends who mix up stuff like seen/saw and I cringe every time I hear it. I really want to correct them, but might be awkward.

        • Yeah i caught one of mine using double negatives.

But yeah i have some 2d game in mind.. Some way down the road..

        • Well, you didn't not catch them, that is.

Amazing, what a fantastic gesture. Definitely the greatest resources given free I have seen to date.

  • A lot of the flash files either don't open properly in flash cs5 or require 5.5 or above. Anyone having the same problem?
