If you have Amazon Prime you can get Dredge for GoG. And a lot of other games. It's weird.

    • +3

Why is it weird? I've collected maybe 400 games since Amazon started in Australia from Prime Gaming. Always bound to be double ups. It's amazing value.

      • That's what's weird. Why are they doing it? What are they selling? With Epic it's obvious they're bribing you to keep their launcher installed but what's Amazon's game?

        • +6

It's a perk of having Prime membership. That's a massive consideration as to why I keep mine alive. Prime is substantially more expensive in US than here so they need to make it worthwhile especially there.

Amazon wouldn't be absorbing all the costs of giving away titles either (nor Epic, GOG, Steam with freebies) but rather developers are happy to give games away through Prime Gaming for increased visibility etc. There are dlcs and other add-ons that developers make on the side when giving away base games.

Then there is AWS adoption, and Twitch partnerships etc. The latter of which they own and make money from ads and subscription costs.

Just all these at the top of my head anyway

they're selling amazon prime. the games are a sweetener to keep you signed up. they want you signed up with them instead of netflix or disney or any other streamer so they do as much as they can to get you to keep subbing.

But also a large number of the games offered free are provided by GOG, Epic etc. So my guess is there are deals from those services or they are providing keys to the games to get you onto those launchers too. Dredge is free on Prime Gaming but you need to claim it on GOG, so thats get you on their site where there other games to buy.

What I find weird is an Ozbargainer questioning things being given away for free! (I know you need to have a subscription of course, so it's not technically 'free'.)

        • Bread and circuses until the barbarians march in and take it all.

        • +1

To be honest I was blowing cash on ps subscription a while back, collecting games without even using the multiplayer. Eventually I realized the foolishness of it but the model works to keep us hooked

      • Can you only play the games with an active prime sub?

        • +2

Depends on the platform which the game is activated. Typically you get a game code for GoG or Epic & therefore don’t need a prime sub to keep playing, but there are a small handful of games which activate on the prime gaming platform, which require your sub to be active to play.

Typically I’ve found the prime-activated games to be of lesser interest or quality, so I don’t typically play them. But your situation/likes might be different to mine.

Edit: You need an active Prime Sub to initially get the game codes and activate them on various platforms.

I’m genuinely excited to play this. I was gonna get it for PS5 but free is great.

Same. I've had this on my Steam wishlist for a while now. Don't really care which store I get it from.

Just need to remember to delete it from my Steam wishlist so I don't buy it there - lol

Yeah, amazing freebie here. Dredge is a fantastic indie and a relatively recent release, the devs have been following it with stages of DLC and ports (most recently this month). Attracted a lot of critical acclaim and award noms in what was a competitive year for indies.

I had a tweak of regret seeing this deal, but I paid out for a physical copy on Switch because I wanted it as a collectible.

Fun little game, the plot is a bit hollow but enjoyable nonetheless.

  • +4

I agree that it's likely to be Dredge based on the clues and a few other things but this is unconfirmed isn't it?

  • +2

Are we sure? Doesn't even appear to be on the Epic store.

    • Epic Games freebies have included day-one additions in the past. Today's freebie, the Dark and Darker – Legendary Status DLC, is one of many examples.

As usual, available from 3am AEDT

  • Between Epic and Prime Gaming I haven't had to buy a game in the last 3 years.

    • +5

I stopped buying AAA but been buying indies, we need more success story like balatro

      • +1

Indie is keeping gaming alive. They often run really well on steam deck and other more modest hardware and provide fun experiences over essentially a generic platform to sell skins and loot boxes to kids.

I'm at this stage in life where I've stopped buying games, and just waiting for them to be given away on Epic.
I was actually expecting Dredge to appear there at some point :D

One of my favourite indie games in years. Ive missed the DLC but it was a great play through

    • +1

      Dlc is pretty good

    • What other indie games do you recommend?

      • +2

not op but I just bought dave the diver and I cannot reccomend enough, its super fun. Also balatro was a massive succsess this year for a reason! It's a great time burner.

        • Agree on those two. Other games I was late to the party on and sunk a lot of time into: Brotato.

  • Yeah, love this game; but have very little time to play these lately.

  • I'm 25 hours into Dredge… Finding it a total blast!

  • Missed it.
