Really great price - will make an excellent gift at Christmas for the money. I've read Windows 8.1 injects a lot of life into this and the full-size USB, included Office 2013 and build quality are definitely positives.

If it included a keyboard it would be an impulse purchase from me. There are units on eBay which have sold for $275 including the Touch Keyboard and a 32GB microSD card.

As something to travel with and Skype, view/backup photos, watch videos/music, it's hard to beat this. The first party apps are excellent and I think alone justify the price tag well and truly.

      • +14

Not true, Win 8.1 RT is available for download. I've updated my year old Surface to 8.1..all good

        • -3

well thats RT version not pure 8.1. why do people just like to down vote a question

        • -5

People some ppl spend their days thinking, should I vote up or down? Then they chose down because it'll make them feel better at the end of the day.
I have a word for it, "serial down voters syndrome"

        • +7

          that's four words

        • +1

imket, it may be seen as misinformation. If someone is trying to make an impulse purchase based on comments here (I know I have), you want them to get the right info and not plant seeds of doubt. Your question looked more like a statement.

Microsoft have not done a great job of branding for RT to the layman so naturally such questions will arise. But I don't think any report or article anywhere has ever suggested RT wouldn't get 8.1.

      • +17

Why do some people insist on making a comment (even in question form of a statement) without having knowledge of what they're saying. Sigh le internet.

    • +1

In order to get the $25 Microsoft Apps Store voucher, make sure to prompt the register operator. He/She may not know about the deal. The dude that I dealt with in the morning didn't need prompting. There were signs all over the laptops and surface gadgets in the Galleries Victoria Store.

On my receipt, it is marked as Mix n Match ID 943
      25 Microsoft Apps Store Credit,
      485056 $0.00

The $25 Voucher cames out a very long piece of paper, with a title of Microsoft Windows 8 ESD.

  • Anyone got one? whats it like?

  • +4

Should have been this price a LOOONG TIME AGO

  • +16

    Windows RT

Why would anyone buy a Windows tablet that actually can not run Windows application? Even Windows RT isn't even good comparing to Android and iOS because of the limited number of apps.

    • -5

Went world anyone but a tablet that can run windows programs? Desktop apps shoehorned on to a touch device is exactly why tablets weren't popular before the iPad.

    • Patience, it'll get there.

    • +12

Office, better network access, better file access, printer support, USB port

Windows RT is a great OS as long as you arnt after some specific app only found on one of the other devices.

For anyone after a basic tablet for viewing websites/emails etc the unit is great and has a lot more functionality than other tablets

      • +6

        +1 for what brent3000 said.
I use my Android tablet quite a lot, but the only apps I have on it are: a web browser, a media player, youtube app and skype (all of which are available on RT). But I really miss a proper office suite, and a slim detachable keyboard.IMO Surface running Win RT could be a more productive tablet for lot of users out there, but unfortunately most of them fail to see this, and end up going for Android and iOS tablets for apps that they probably will only use less than 5% of the time.

Unfortunately RT wasn't out when I bought my Tablet. Otherwise I would've grabbed one with no hesitation.

      • With regard to specific apps, does anyone know what is the current state and status of, say, Evernote, Dropbox, eBay and Pocket apps for RT? Do they exist and if so, are they anywhere near the same quality and functionality as their IOS and Android counterparts?

        • +2

Evernote: has been in the store since day 1. It's pretty good, but I prefer OneNote (which is available in both 'tablet' version and the free desktop version in the free Office suite).

Dropbox: 90% sure there is an official app (but it won't sync files to the device). There are lots of 3rd party Dropbox apps, as well as apps that combine Dropbox with other service like Google Drive. Note: you can't use auto-syncing folders on Windows RT unless you use Skydrive.

eBay: there is a great official app, has been all along

Pocket: no official app, but some very good 3rd party ones (e.g. Latermark and Pouch). The Pocket website works great in the browser (but of course you need an Internet connection), and Microsoft have a similar app called 'Reading List' that is very similar to Pocket. Pocket apps work great with the sharing functionality of Windows 8/RT (similar - but better in my opinion - to the sharing in Android, and the non-existent sharing in iOS).

Most official apps fully support live tiles (making them often more useful than their Android/iOS equivalents). It's a mixed bag otherwise - many official apps are far better than their equivalents, but some lack functionality due to being early versions.

In my experience (going from Android to Windows) there is nothing to worry about in terms of apps unless there is something very specific you MUST have that is not available. Games are another story - Windows is catching up, but there is far less choice in games at the moment. I still have a heap of great games, however.

    • +5

Some people dont need so much crap on their tablet for one.
For $230, which android and IOS devices can you get? Feel free to list them here (with a link) and then we can do the comparasion, shall we?

    • When was the last time you wanted to run a full x86 windows app on a tablet????

  • +1

OP, "Bargain of the morning is here", sounds familiar when you posted TGG $10 games deal. See how it ended? It is cursed.

  • +2

Please change the title to state Microsoft Surface RT.

    • +5

Yes, I got excited until I saw it was RT.

      • At least i wasn't the only once….. I would have bought it in a heartbeat…..and lauded it over my mate!

  • Hmm very temptimg….

  • When the Duck is this sale? I cant find any info on it.

  • Windows RT needs to RIP already.

That said. It's still a good deal.

  • +1

Wonder if the keyboard is going to be reduced in price as well.
Pretty cool if it was included :)

Do these support many media formats ?

    • Media format support is very good. Anything non-standard can be supported by app developers (e.g. .MKV won't play in the in-built video app, but there are several apps available that will play .MKV).

Flash video works in the browser. I've not had any trouble playing any videos on my RT devices (in the early days there were no .MKV apps, and I've heard reports of some .MKVs not working correctly, but I've never had issues).

  • +2

RT or not, at this price it's perfect for what a lot of people will simply use it for.

  • +14

fwiw. It's $229 at Harvey Norman.
    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/microsoft-surface-32gb-tablet…

The gen-1 touch covers are $66 at HN.
    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/microsoft-surface-touch-cover…

    $223 + $66 is not a bad price for a 10" Tablet with Office 2013.
Microsoft has opened up flash - so it should work on most education sites.
There is no Java for RT/Arm.

NB: The pen support supposedly isn't great.
You can hook up keyboards, etc.
External monitor out is via mini HDMI output. Remember it's a Tegra 3 - so it's not going to be uber fast driving two monitors.

The 64GB device is #394 with touchpad.
    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/tablets/mic…

    • +2

This is a good deal with Harvey Norman for $295 (tablet and keyboard) however I need something extra for $5 to make it $300+ so I can get my TRS next month when I travel :@)

edit: all good purchased a stylus for $38 to bump the price up to $333.

      • +1

        FWIW.
JB HiFi gives $25 of Microsoft Store credits with any Windows touch tablet.

The gen-1 touch keyboards were full price at JB Hifi (this mornning, Sydney Galleries Victoria Store).

        • ahhh shucks too late i just brought mine from HN… hmmm wondering if I call and enquire to see if they match it?

is it just a voucher they will put in the delivery with JB? or you need to be instore to get it free?

        • Where is the online info on this $25 credit offer?

        • I'd like to get some info about the $25 credit offer too. As I was just about to get HN to match the JB price, so I can get my $30 credit from AMEX when shopping at HN. Being able to show then info about this $25 offer would be even better.

        • +1

Sorry - it was in Store.
They had little signs blue-tacked onto various computers and tablets.

There is a PDF on Microsoft's site explaining the deal. (sorry don't know how to get a clean URL).

          http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&sour…

Download the pdf onto your phone.

        • Thanx jj. Now why the heck doesn't this offer apply to Harvey Norman, when JBs, Dick Smith and the Good Guys are all on board???

        • Ok, just popped into JB at lunch break. They told me that the $25 credit offer was in last weeks catalogue, not valid any more.
That linked PDF in the comment below though seems to claim otherwise, ends 24/12/2013. Unfortunately HN doesn't seem to be a participating store on that offer.

        • I'm cancelling my Harvey Norman order as we speak. They know about the offer, but say they can't match it. JBs, DSE and Good Guys are onboard! It's a Microsoft offer, so whatever JBs said about it being "last week" is irrelevant.

        • +1

I think the $25 only applies to the App store and no Microsoft's online store. Still credit is better than no credit :)

        • +1

Found the official info on Microsoft's website…

          http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/offers

  • I want it, but I have a MacBook, desktop and a Nexus 4. Knowing me, this would end up on eBay within 2 days :(

    • +1

Hey That's still OK, For me a lot of stuff is still lying in boxes , like that universal remote, or the third wireless Headphone..

  • +1

It's a good price for anyone wanting a tablet for just some work.. it even manages to be cheaper than a Google Chrome notebook.

  • Windows RT Tablet is set to be dumped by Microsoft.
    http://www.smarthouse.com.au/home_office/QVHYNENM-windows-rt…

    • +1

They won't dump it, WP and RT will just end up merging into the one OS.

    • +1

Utter nonsense. And regardless, Windows RT apps = Windows 8 apps, so nothing would be affected if that were the case anyway.

Windows Phone and Windows RT are on the path to merging. The Windows RT name will probably go away.

  • +5

Needs to be $199 to bite :P

    • +4

      Or 233 with cover

      • yeah, cover/keypad is $100, WTF. Im sure you can use a wireless like the K400R but that can make portability a pain

        • +1

Touch Cover at MS store is $70

EDIT: $66 at HN, the price drops!

        • Black ones are $100

        • +1

The original touch cover is an abomination. You couldn't pay me to use it.

The type cover seemed to work well when I tried it instore.

        • Black seems to be $66 now too

        • Nope - out of stock: Ozbargained!

        • How bad is it? I tried it in store when it first came out, but forgot long ago what was it like. I originally thought otherwise, but apparently the new Touch/Type Cover 2's are compatible with Surface RT, so might be worthwhile picking up one of those instead.

        • The keyboard covers are expensive, but very good.

You can use any keyboard with Windows RT - Bluetooth, USB, large, small.

Unless you plan to use Office, a keyboard is not of any use.

        • The Cover 2's are also backlit: nice!

    • +19

You do realize that RT and Pro are running different operating systems right? The RT tabs run a 32-bit ARMv7 version of Windows which is not the same as the regular Win 8 that Surface Pro runs. And part of the reason why it's being killed off by Microsoft is the lack of sales and app developer attention it gets.

Here is a list of all the differences between a Pro2 vs a Surface2. The major difference is the type of apps they run and how they're installed. RT tablets (unless jailbroken) have their apps installed via the Store.
      http://www.gizmag.com/surface-2-vs-surface-pro-2/29484/

      • +1

        Good article, thanks.

  • +7

I still remember I preordered this one for $678 T T. anyway, good price now.

  • +3

Just out of curiosity, why would someone choose this over a nexus 7?

My main usage around the house would be (after fighting my fiance for use of it)

    1) watching youtube, twitch.tv
    2) connecting to my home network shares
    3) streaming content from my pc via dlna if 2 is unavailable

    Which is more suitable??

    • -6

      No Apps, No Thanks.

      Good price though

    • +1

Well it has a larger screen that the nexus 7 although it is lower resolution. (choose between portability or screen size, and the kickstand is useful if you have it on a desk or table.

      1) Doesn't have an official you tube app although an app called metrotube is really great for YouTube.
Not sure about twitch but if there isn't an app the web browser will work for it

      2) Of course, you have still got the full file manager

3)dlna is supported as well although I would recommend you install plex on the streaming server and use the plex apps on your devices (really great experiences)

      • Thanks for the input. I had a look at one today, but I just wasn't impressed by the form factor when holding it. I think I will just keep biding my time till something makes me super crazy to the point that I must impulse buy it.

    • +6

I sold a Nexus 7 and got a Surface. The Surface has a lot of the Windows features I am use to. File explorer, RDP, mapping drives, support for many printers and a full version of Office. There are plenty of Apps to watch streamed content and even the Xbox music and Video apps are fine for this.

Overall the Surface feels like a productive device, to me the Nexus 7 just felt like a big phone. I am not an app crazy guy, don't care about games. There are plenty of Apps in the Store and the surface has a desktop browser with Internet Explorer with full flash support. So there is no issues using web based apps.

    • +1

The surface is my "breakfast" tablet - check email, check ozbargain, check Facebook, read news. Any real work happens on my laptop. If only it could be a remote for my TV it would be perfect.

      • -2

So what you are saying is you need an Android tablet? (which will do everything you've describe AND will act as a remote for your TV)

        • Yes. But we are talking about the Surface. I could also just buy a galaxy s4 phone and have all that.

      • There's no reason you can't use Surface as a TV remote. There are apps. I personally use mine to control my TV through XBMC.

  • +4

Only speculation at this stage but probably something to do with the price drops - Microsoft supposedly discontinuing RT: http://www.channelweb.co.uk/crn-uk/news/2309387/microsoft-ge…

    • +1

I'd say the price drops are due to it being last years model.

It's more likely that RT and WP will be merged, so the ecosystem would be more akin to iPad/iPhone and Android phone/tablet. That is, the same apps being able to run on both.

  • Thanks so much this one is going in the stocking!

    • +1

      Stocking must be pretty big.

  • +3

    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/html/pbPage.PDPS/productID.286919900?icid=XmasGiftGuide_Feature_Surface$160off

Microsoft Store got it for $229 free shipping if your local store is out of it or want to save $3.95.

    • +2

Considering this I think we should all be haggling over JB's price.

    • +2

If you sign up for qwibble.com.au you supposedly get 6.4% cash back on Surface purchases.
      http://www.qwibble.com.au/microsoft-store-australia?show=vis…

The Microsoft Store Australia is fulfilled out Singapore, has an australian ABN, but a US postal address. The invoice as 10% tax, but doens't really say GST and "Tax Invoice", so it may not be usable for TRS (I will try it late December when I travel).

JB Hifi (at least in store) gives you a $25 Microsoft Store voucher for Microsoft / XBox, etc purchases online.

      • Where are the online details of this alleged $25 credit offer?

        • +1

Did you even look at the online link iseenya?
"alleged" is hardly appropriate when it clearly states that you will receive $25 credit

Microsoft will pay you $25 in the form of a code ($25 Payment Code) to be used exclusively in the Microsoft Store (Credit).

      • Has anyone actually purchased this???
Is the $25 a code on the receipt, or how does it work?

Edit : Finally answered below by zone :-)

  • ordered one. 10" screen, good webcam, skype, youtube, internet, office- meets all my needs

  • +1

The screen res is a bummer. Also heard surface 1 lag a bit. Hang out for a surface 2 me thinks

    • +1

Look to see if you can get a Dell Venue 8 Pro for a reasonable price (not the aussie tax rip off). In the US that's <$299 for something that WILL run real windows progs, and about the same speed as the surface 2.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhQ-1ACbDa0

  • Can it play abc for kids smoothly?

  • Only 1 USB is a let down otherwise I would buy this to play music via USB DAC. I use the other USB for external storage.

    • +16

Well it is 1 full size USB port more than most tablets.

      • +3

could always use a usb hub :) or a powered hub for more ports

        • I would have thought the DAC would require its own port rather than a share port.
