  • Looks like a great deal. Anyone know much about lenses to provide some thoughts on the two additional zoom lenses?

Majority of the time (probably 95% of the time) you'll be using the 16-50mm lens.

I would say you would use the 55-210mm for event photography like sports and concerts.

50mm you'd use rarely unless you're taking portraits as this has the same ability as the 16-50mm but with improved picture quality and better background blurring.

(amateur photographer here… correct me if I'm wrong)

when you understand your camera better, your primary lens will be the 50mm/F1.8 and your leg will be the zoom. i will appreciate the 35mm/f1.8 more but this is seperate purchase. your 16-50mm will be used for extra wide angle photo only.

      • My favorite lens was the rather expensive 18-200mm (11x zoom, 200/18 = 11.1 = 11x zoom) lens. Wide lens and super zoom. Very heavy, but well worth it for all my shooting needs. I do wish I had bought the 16-50mm lens for everyday travelling and shooting, but it was my travel cam (until stolen).

If I had the cash I would snap this up right away, it's a good deal

The 16-50mm powerzoom is a quirky one, absolutely atrocious barrel distortions and doesn't know the definition of 'sharpness'……see that's when you look at RAWs, 99.9% of the time you look at Jpegs and the post processing will correct most of the lens characteristics, in a sense it's designed to shoot Jpegs. Other than that, very versatile and small lens for a 50mm, but aperture is widest at f3.5 when in 16mm (technically 14mm but becomes 16mm after processing). And on top of all that it has optical stabilisation, so overall I liked it more than downsides.

Personally looking back at my experience of it, I'd sell both the 16-50mm and 50mm prime for either the Zeiss 24mm Sonnar or Zeiss Touit 32mm. Keep the telezoom 210mm for times when you need it.

    • Don't let people put you off the 16-50mm.

It is absolutely fine for what its supposed to be. An inexpensive, lightweight pancake lens.

Does it have significant distortion at the short end? Absolutely. But this is automatically corrected in camera, or your RAW processing software will do it for you. In fact, I actually like some barrel distortion when taking photos of people because without it, at 16mm they have unattractive elongated features.

Softness or sharpness is all relative. If you're not pixel peeping, then it's plenty sharp enough for everyday photos.

The only downside(s) to the lens are that it doesn't accept a hood and the zoom by wire takes a bit of getting used to.

      Fattyman has it right.

MOST people will use the 16-50mm lens most of the time.

The 55-210mm is good if you are far away from whatever your taking a photo of (keep in mind that the Nex 6 doesn't have autofocus abilities quite as fast as a normal DSLR)

The 50mm (75mm equiv) is too long to use as an "everyday" lens. It's best suited for portraits or low light situations.

Not enough lenses. Deal breaker for sure.

On a more serious note: How do Sony DSLR's compare to typical Nikon and Canon types?

    • +1

Are you serious? $999 for those 3 lenses plus kit plus 32GB sd card is a good deal. Bag too.

I would however trade in all 3 lenses if I could for one of those carl zeiss sony 18-200mm lenses. They're big but quality.
