3301

Attempt #2 for an OzBargain meetup.

RSVP here

See here for more details.

In a few days, you could be playing pinball, eating, and drinking with OzBargain members all for a low price of $5. (84% off RRP! Regular price $30)

➜ When: November 29 7PM-10PM - Black Friday

➜ Where: Bumper Action Amusements 127 Whiteman Street, South Melbourne - Minutes from the city, near tram lines.

➜ Who: 80 people is the limit. OzBargain members. $5 per person.

➜ What else: In addition to having 3 hours of unlimited pinball, pool, air hockey and video games, we will also be providing food and non-alcoholic drinks. Alcoholic drinks can be purchased at the venue.

How to sign up:

  1. Go to the meetup page and join the OzBargain Meetups group.
  2. We will manually approve each account.
  3. Once approved you will need to RSVP for the event.

We will be approving non-new members first. We don't want the OzBargain event OzBargained by non-OzBargainers (if that makes any sense).

FAQ (updated as people ask questions):

Q: What food and drinks will there be?

A: At this point, it's looking like pizza and whatever cheap cans of soft drink are on sale in Nov.

Q: Is there a bar?

A: Yes, please let us know what your drink of choice is and they will stock it.

Q: Why is the meetup not free?

A: According to the Internet which is always right, if you don't charge for an event ~50% of attendees will not show/cancel. If a small fee is involved, this number drops to 20-30%. The Brisbane event was free and there were a lot of cancellations/no shows. Not only does this screw everything up with organizing the venue but also makes it difficult to cater for food.

Q: Can family/partners/friends attend?

A: At this point, OzBargainers have the #1 priority. You just need an OzBargain account (hint, hint). In a few days, room provided, we will open it up to family, friends.

Q: Do I have to be identified or can I attend anonymously?

A: I will be creating nametags with First Names & Usernames. You can choose whether to wear them or feel free to make edits. No interaction is required other than conversating with the venue's door person (venue employee).

Q: Will there be meetups in other cities?

A: Next meetup will be Sydney. We are currently looking for a suitable venue. If you want a meetup in your city, please organize it and we may be able to help out financially.

Q: Where can I park?

A: There are a number of 6 hour parking spots outside the venue as well as a free parking lot across the street.

Q: I signed up to OzBargain Meetups but my account hasn't been approved yet. Why?

A: This is a meetup for existing OzBargain members. Those who just signed up to participate in the meetup will be approved at a later date once existing OzBargain members have had a chance to signup.

Q: Can I pay at the door?

A: No, this is a cash-free event. You can pay via paypal or make a deposit into the OzBargain bank account.

Q: Can I get a refund?

A: Yes, if the request is made more than 48 hours prior to the event.

Other things that may/will happen: An Uber code for free rides, other finger food, prizes, free OzBargain t-shirts, projector showing OzBargain Live, Google Hangout with other members, Entertainment voucher swaps, Photo booth.

        • You could have stuff like Whats the most popular bargain ever on Ozbargain? or Who are the people that run Ozbargain? (Im gonna look both those up now cos Ive no idea) and stuff like that, but what ever you come up with Im sure itll be great and looking forward to the big night too :)

    • Suggest to have some OzBargain merchandise give aways, like mugs, note pads, pans…

These would've been a lot easier (and cheaper) to organise had Vistaprint not stopped doing those 'free' promo items!!!

      • +2

Ironically, they stopped cos they got OzBargain'd

        • Yeah I know, I could even tell you the date. 5/5, coz I still have 00s more items in 'processing'!!!

  • +4

I've just noticed that the OP hasn't been using the Rep button!!! What's with this? ;)

    • +1

      Aren't we all rep-ing OzB? :p

      • But I'm not associating, I'm just using them!!! ;)

  • +2

Damn my social anxiety! The meetup sounds fun :)

    • my thoughts exactly!

  • Just a query won't most be playing their launch day PS4's with all the cheap games they found on Oz bargain, otherwise would have been free to come to the meet up.

    • +1

And the rest will be buying Black Friday specials

    • +3

Bring your PS4 and we will plug it into the projector.

  • +7

How to proof I'm ozbargainer? Can I show the order cancellation email of the HN tablet last year?

    • Nah just show them your free iphone case from vistaprint

    • How to proof I'm ozbargainer?

Just bring a trailer full of stuff you bought through the deals from here which you never ever going to use.

  • +14

Kogan and Lenovo reps should attend to provide an apology for getting everyone's hopes up

  • +2

    I'm sure I posted this previously, but…

In true OzBargain fashion, I'm providing FREE* transport to the event for up to 4 people from the SE 'burbs in my car. Note this is to the event, as return trip is not guaranteed. Also, is only FREE if I don't have to clean up or repair my vehicle after the OzBargain event excitement trip in… ie. no nervous excitement urination in the vehicle. In this case, I will be expecting a professional cleaning fee.

    First 4 people only!
Message me on OzBargain with your suburb of residence so I can organise a suitable meet point for people needing a lift.

    Bring on the PINNIES!!!
Oh, and whoever was bringing a PS4, I think that's an awesome idea!

    • Just a reminder that this offer still stands.

  • +5

Lucky me. I'll be in Melbourne on 29th so looks good to me. Travelling on my TigerAir $10 each way ticket from Sydney and staying at YHA in CBD. Use my Senior Myki to get to this event. Haven't played pinball in years, so should be very nostalgic.

    • +2

      Senior Ozbargainer?

      • +5

Yep! We have to make our money stretch as well as you. Pity this event wasn't held on Saturday, I'd get FREE public transport.

  • +3

    this is weird

  • +1

    Any vego/vegan food?

    • +3

Definitely will be veggie pizza. Vegan pizza? Does that exist? I'll have to check and see what they can offer.

      • Im putting my hand up for Hawaiian pizza, please please

  • Thanks… I'll take two.

  • +2

    Ozbargain meetup general conversation starter:
    "Sooooo…do you like…stuff?"

  • -4

$5? Is that me paying you or you paying me?

  • +2

Haha; love the price "$5 (84% off)"
If you just said $5 it wouldn't be a bargain and no-one would turn up!

  • Thanks Neil & Scotty bought 10. :P

  • +1

Hi Neil & Scott. Great show… keep up the great work!

  • +2

I hope that there is plenty of Vegetarian and Margherita Pizzas too!

  • +5

NO DEAL. Found the same Meetup on Amazon for $4.50 - delivered…

    • Well talk to Neil maybe he can price match :)

    • -3

      Officeworks?

  • +2

I've been so busy hunting bargains, I nearly forgot to RSVP! Looking forward to the event….again! Room for 3 more in my hot rod! Coming from Bundoora and heading into town via Greensborough, Heidelberg, Eastern Fwy etc…so, message me if I don't have to veer off the path too much! :)

EDIT: I'm only willing to spend the free $5 worth of extra petrol on my Caltex Scoopon!

    • Count me in mate! Heidelberg checking in.

      • Okey doke! Message me with your details :)

  • I'm keen

    • Trinh Tran
  • lmao the ol melbourne classic

  • Isn't bumper amusements the company that ripped off a stack of Aussies with the wizards of oz pinball?

There are hundreds of people who are out of pocket 8000 dollars a pop each thanks to them.

  • -1

I will neg this deal based on the reputation of Bumper Amusements.

"It is my understanding that Bumper took about $450k from buyers."

    Finally,

Bumper Amusements Pty Ltd is in administration

    http://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/bumper-action-amuseme…

    https://insolvencynotices.asic.gov.au/browsesearch-notices/n…

    1. to consider the early destruction of books and records

    Errr?

IMHO OzBargain should not support this business in any way shape or form.

    • +2

I don't know and won't guess on the pinball machine issues. They are aware of these threads online but there is more to the story (multiple owners) that frankly I don't want to know or get involved with.

Assuming liquidation means the company is out of business is incorrect. It has something to do with buying the other owner out and creating a new company.

I should stress for the purposes of the meetup that it doesn't affect anything that we are doing. All is good for Friday. Should be a fun night!

      • In all honestly it looks like they did that to sidestep all the people who paid 8000 dollars to them so they wouldn't have to pay them or supply the machine in question.

Just I think you should let people know this is the kind of company you are dealing with since someone might decide to buy something extremely expensive from them and risk losing a whole stack of money with those guys.

        • +1

This is a meet-up, the activities are still in place and it is virtually for free!

Unless Bumper do something to disrupt the meet-up, then you can not "neg" the deal, just mention you arn't supportive of the company, the organizers should do exactly what they did say, and STAY OUT OF IT! Bumper is providing this facility presumably at a significant discount or potentially free, so there is no need to ruffle the feathers and compromise the meet up after the previous one already fell through especially.

Just imagine you consider EB Games to prey on parents, grandparents and young kids to pay $110 for a "new release" game that's $70 everywhere, is a form of deception and robbery as many people do, but the day they have a sale and clear out a $50 game for $20, every ozbarginer interested in that product would be chasing stock.

So don't condemn a good deal for a prejudice on a supplier, as true or untrue as it may be, its irrelevant.

I can neg based on the evidence I have presented. From the voting guidelines I can neg if I believe there are "Major issues with the retailer".

OzBargain is paying for the hire of the venue, it's usually $30 hence it's 84% off RRP

        • They are doing that hopefully to get some sales.

This company has ripped people off at least around half a million dollars by getting people to pay for things they never deliver.

Sure have the event there but I think people should know this is the company they are dealing with so they can be informed buyers. This isn't trivial purchases as well many of the items what they sell exceed 5000 dollars easily.

If EB took the money and never delivered the product then that would be a fair comparison. Also change the price of the game to 8000 dollars.

  • I will continue here as I submitted my previous comment.

Apples and oranges. How is that even a comparison?

So don't condemn a good deal for a prejudice on a supplier, as true or untrue as it may be, its irrelevant

It is not irrelevant if OzBargain is a paying customer of Bumper. So how is prejudice when I have presented reasons and facts?

    Regardless, have fun Melbournians.

    • +2

Okay. Points taken. We'll consider when we organise our next meetup.

      Regardless, have fun Melbournians

I see. So all these because you are just another Sydneysider that are not able to go? :)

      • -4

        No :)

  • +2

If anyone needs a lift from the SE 'Burbs drop me a message. I've got 4 seats available in my car for anyone that needs a lift.

Offered this previously but offering again down the bottom.
Let me know, first 4 to respond I'll contact. I'll be passing through Wellington Rd/Springvale Rd intersection, gives an idea of where abouts I'm travelling through.

  • +3

    Update:

    • 58 people have RSVPed so far.
    • I will be picking up drinks tomorrow. Any preferences? I'll be going with supermarket specials - Schweppes Mixers Varieties - Limit per customer 4 x 300ml, Kirks Soft Drink Varieties 10 x 375ml, and whatever else.
    • Pizza is provided by Pepes. Probably mostly Margarita unless someone has a preference.
    • The projector is good to go. My computer is good to go. Their Internet connection can be hooked up to my computer. At the very least, we'll have OzBargain live. I'll attempt a Google Hangout if I can get all the cables plugged in properly.
    • If anyone wants to do an Entertainment book voucher trade, then certainly go for it.

    Any other requests?

    • Pepes Pizza: Super Supreme is always a good value choice. Maybe Vegetarian too. This should give some basic choice. They are all the same price. Looking forward to it. Thanks for organising it Neil!

    • Details for the Google Hangout connection?

      • +1

It would be coming up on https://plus.google.com/+ozbargain

I would be on my phone on 3G though and only have a few minutes after 7PM.

        • Yeah, I headed over there earlier but they were just changing something over with their transformer so no power to the building. I'm heading over there again now and will try. I don't think there should be an issue getting video however getting the sound/microphone to play with PA system is probably unlikely.

        • if its not to late maybe just go for some of the classic favorites, you know margarita, ham and cheese, meatlovers, capricciosa pizza…provided they are all the same price, some variety would be great if possible!

  • When's the deadline for RSVPing to the meetup? I'm not sure if I can go and if I do, I will be late.

    Thanks!

    • I've set the RSVP cutoff on Meetup for 10AM. Basically, I need a stable RSVP list so I can check off people at door, have the right amount of pizza and drinks, not exceed capacity of venue.

      PM me and we'll discuss.

      • +2

You can post the leftovers to me if there are any of course. I'll PM my address.

  • Have fun today guys and girls! Waiting for the next Sydney event :)

  • Hmm.. prolly should of asked this earlier, but the email I got yesterday has "I'm Going" in green.. that means im rsvp'd, right? :/

    • never mind, I appear under "60 attending, rsvps closed" with my goofy message

  • Most convenient tram route from city?

    • 96 from Bourke st. The stop is right outside venue.

      • thanks

  • +2

Thanks everyone! I thoroughly enjoyed it!

    • Your welcome :P

  • +3

It was a bit of fun.
    I smashed my thumb
    $20 I won.

  • +1

Thank you for organising everything :) My friend and I had a great fun!

  • +18

Just got home (20 minutes for a tram). Had a great night.

    Some thoughts:

    • I probably should have known this but OzBargainers devour pizza. 12 pizzas and 3 garlic breads were demolished in minutes. Another 6 pizzas plus 2 garlic breads were ordered which were also gone through quickly. So yeah, we like pizza.

    • Still have loads of t-shirts to give out.

    • After lots of fiddling around I got G+ to broadcast live. It appears Youtube has recorded the whole event however it was a bit of a mystery for others to be able to connect to the hangout. At one point we had 2 viewers watching so looks like someone figured it out. Might need to test that out in future.

    • I believe we ended up with 64 people RSVPed and 5 no shows. Then venue could have easily had over 100 people there.

    • The venue got into the trivia mood and also gave out 2 passes to their upcoming Pinball Faith.

    • yacman has the strongest punch.

    • inlina of Loaded Trolley loves Costco but won't go so far as recommending it to all.

    • peeweekathi is a competition master and has won stuff like trips overseas. She definitely needs to write a post about it.

    • She was also nice enough to carpool, pickup and dropoff hashtagbargain. Hashtagbargain was kind enough to point out that there was a sushi maggot deal on the frontpage. Moderating mid-meetup is a first for me.

    • The Land of Smeg dressed up in overalls from the 2 for 1 overalls deal. Pretty awesome.

    • As per Land of Smegs outfit, the theme of buying bargains that were not needed was common. I reckon we need to have a comp based on the best useless bargains bought.

    • Bobbymg has now been to 2 out of 3 meetups and I would hazard a guess now owns the most amount of OzBargain t-shirts.

    • For another meetup, someone suggested some darts place in QV.

    • Other discussions, 28 degrees price protection, Good Guys 120% guarantee, who is jv and is he here?, kudos to theearth and easternculture for all of their posts.

That's all I can remember for now. Everyone was very nice and easy to talk to. Hope everyone had fun. Any feedback, complaints, etc, let us know.

    • Did you take any photos?

      • +7

Yes, peeweekathi took some photos with her $50 Sony camera she got from Officeworks (via OzBargain). I'll post them up but just want to make sure everyone is fine with having their picture up or alternatively I can blur out your nametag. I can foresee all our mugshots being put up at Officeworks cashiers!

  • Just watching us on YouTube! It was a fun night and great to meet some of you!
Thanks again to Neil, for all his hard work organizing it :) Loved the venue!
Fortunately, orange is one of my fave colours, so, I'll be wearing my OzB t/shirt with pride!
Looking forward to the next one!

EDIT: YouTube only goes for around 8 of the 14 mins. Looks like the feed was lost. I must've broken it, because it's shortly after I wave at the camera…LOL!
