OzBargain Black Friday Meetup Melbourne (Attempt #2): FREE*: 3 hours of retro video games, pinball, food & drinks. Interested?

11/11: Venue booked!

RSVP Now

For those who don't recall, we organized a meetup in May at Bumper Action Amusements in South Melbourne . 60 people RSVPed, food set, drinks set, venue good to go. Then the day before the local council revoked the venue's license to hold functions. Meetup OzBargained Brodened Cancelled!

In the past few months, they have been trying to resolve the issue unsuccessfully. Solution? Move the venue 2 blocks closer to the city.

The Pitch:

To stem the social awkwardness of talking to people offline, we are going to have the meetup at a place called Bumper Action Amusements in South Melbourne. They generally service and hire pinball machines & video games. Once a month, they open up their showroom for something called Pinball Faith. Sharking for Chips and Drinks has a great writeup about them. We will be hiring the venue just for OzBargainers.

Consider this Stage 1 for organizing this meetup to assess how many people want to come and if the date is OK with everyone. If Nov 29 doesn't work for everyone, we'll probably set a future date after the Christmas holidays (Jan/Feb). Poll will close in 7 days.

↓↓↓↓↓

➜ When: Nov 29 7PM-10PM Friday

➜ Where: Bumper Action Amusements 127 Whiteman Street, South Melbourne - Plenty of parking, close walk from the city, next to tram stop, bus stop, South Melbourne market, Kogan HQ.

➜ Who: The capacity of the venue is around 100 people. $5 per person (so people show up).

➜ What else: In addition to having 3 hours of unlimited pinball, pool table, air hockey, juke boxes, foosball and video games, we will also be providing free food and non-alcoholic drinks. I'm pushing for pizza from a local shop but as they haven't completely opened they are still figuring out the logistics of holding functions/catering. The venue doesn't have a liquor license but they have indicated they may be able to serve alcohol if using a caterer but this adds complexity (Thanks Vic gov!).

  • Who's invited?

All members. This is all dependent on interest expressed on this thread. This is an OzBargain member meetup for OzBargain members. While of course we would like to extend this to friends and family, members get the first priority. (Don't just get your family/friends/partner to sign up for an account! ;) )

So what's next? Vote in the poll, leave a comment, add suggestions, preference of date, or any questions. Once we know rough numbers, settle on a date and figure out logistics, we will open up a new thread where you can secure your spot. If there is anyone who is in event management or would like to help me out, then let me know. I'll shout you a couple of whatevers.

The 29th is Black Friday in the US. We should have OzBargain live running on a projector.

  • I've got a bit of time over just the next 3 weeks but you'll probably get more people if you make it 29th or later.

Will there be a Sydney one? :(

    • That's the plan although nothing set yet. I'm not too familiar with Sydney so if someone has a suggestion for a place to do a meetup then that would be good.

      • Is there a budget (ok, silly question) for a Sydney event? For venue hire or equivalent.

  • +1

Maybe this sort of thing should be an exception and show in the list of deals at least once. I only just noticed it despite checking OZB each day.

    • +2

Once we confirm a date, we'll post it as a deal. Technically it is a deal as they charge $30 for this. :)

  • Thanks! Got the email and hopefully, it goes ahead this time! :)

    • +2

If it doesn't then I'm thinking we are seriously cursed or Gerry Harvey is pulling strings in government.

      • Or OzBargain penalty box premium VIP members.

  • as long as its not between December 2nd-9th and i'll be there

I am busy but I would love to discuss not caring about downvotes!

I'm in! Was mega excited about the previous one, was mega bummed when it was cancelled.

I have a wedding that weekend too! Double hoorah!!!

    • I have a wedding that weekend too! Double hoorah!!!

I take it that's not your wedding, else you wouldn't be saying hoorah (well for not much longer anyway :P) lol

      • No, close friends' wedding, of which I'm more than happy to attend! My wedding is in March '14… plenty of time to get in more OzBargaining…

  • I'm in!

  • Count me in! I think the corporate games is the previous week so all good for me.

  • Would be keen if it was on another weekend but that's my problem. Well done on bridging the digital gap.

  • I'm from Sydney, and if I can get a cheap OZB flight down to Melb, I'd be in for sure :)

  • +1

Perhaps if possible to make a priority list for people who were paid up and ready to go to the last one?

  • The party express starts right here, all aboard!

    LETS PARTY LIKE WE BARGAIN!!

I'd be in too if I can bring my partner along, she visits oz bargain but doesn't own a account and as per the text, I'm not getting her to create an account of just to go.
So can I be a reserve attendee if there are two places spare?

    • It shouldn't be an issue. While we prefer everyone be a member, in the signup/RSVP, the other person just needs to put down your OzBargain username.

  • ozbargain should have a meet up in Sydney that would be awesome

  • Great date as I will be keeping an eye on good black Friday discounts!! Count me in.

  • I guess it's month end time for finance people.

  • Would love to come but time isn't convenient to come to melbourne! already booked for the 10th

  • I'm in! Looking forward to it.

  • +1

    I'm keen

    Will Scotty be there?

  • Do they have the wizard of oz pinball?

  • +1

Great opportunity to bring entertainment book and swap vouchers

  • +1

I can just imagine someone checking ozbargain during the event and an awesome deal (price error) will pop up, they will announce it to everyone and as a result 100 ozbargainers will be simultaneously pulling out their phones, ruthlessly trying to beat everyone else to get their order in

    • I'm sure someone will have a netbook/laptop with internet running ready for Ozbargaining… hehehe

      • There is a projector there. I'm hoping at the very least to have OzBargain Live running and wishful thinking a Google Hangout.

  • Doh, company's xmas party is on that day! :-(

  • i missed last time but wont make that same mistake

  • OK, it looks like there are sufficient numbers for a meetup on Nov 29. For those who want a later date, if everyone enjoys the first one and I make it back home in 1 piece then we'll definitely make it a regular thing.

At this point, we are waiting on information from the venue in regards to food and drinks. They are having Pinball Faith next Friday and still have no idea what they're doing in regards to food. I'll keep harassing them and if we can work something out then we'll lock it in.

  • My partner is keen to come along too - can he make an ozbargain account or am i going to get in trouble for sock-puppeting?

    • I'll let everyone know the RSVP process at a later date.

Partners, friends, family can have accounts. The issue is 1 person having multiple accounts and voting up each others deals.

      • +4

hahaha not even i have enough spare time to bother doing that!

  • I didn't get a chance to vote (today is the 2nd Nov) But I'd like to come too!

  • Was Gerry Harvey invited to be key note speaker? <eg>

  • iam having an ACL knee surgery on the 25th of nov… that i got for cheap on ozbargains….

  • +1

As a sign of OzBargaining prowess, I can offer some FREE transportation via some spare seats in my car for those in either the ESE 'burbs (if I'm coming from home) or the SE/Bayside 'burbs (if I'm coming from work).

Either way, will keep the forum notified. I have 4 seats available (under my fiancee's junk). Return trip not guaranteed.

  • Just to keep everyone updated. We are close to making the booking.

The new venue will accommodate more people (~80 confortably). They will also have a bar where people can buy drinks. They've asked me for a preference of what we want so later down the track, we'll do a straw poll. The venue is also providing us pizzas. So all good!

Just awaiting confirmations on a couple of things, then need to put deposit/book, then we'll open up the meetup page and post a deal.

  • OK, we are all booked in for the 29th!

    RSVP now

  • I will attend, but PayPal is taking a long time clearing my funds :(
