        • Yeh, I was a corporate executive in my own mind as well for years. Aren't we all. And as we all know you have to kick heads, step on toes and have profit as your sole driver to succeed in business. What a load of stereotypical tosh. That may describe you - who knows or cares - but don't put your principles and drivers onto others. Plenty of things could be construed as "breaching the best interests of shareholders" but good corporate citizenship isn't one of them.

Edit- your apple won't get you knowledge pal. Do some reading. It's all in the public domain. In fact for moderately informed people it's common knowledge. Even if you aren't involved in "corporate benevolence", plenty are.

Here's an interesting piece of Telstra management.

Trying to get their employees onto AWA- this document ended up being leaked.

          http://www.actu.org.au/Images/Dynamic/attachments/6044/telst…

          So much corporate benevolence!

        • Yeh they've played hardball with their employees, sacked staff, relocated employment, overcharged customers, arguably screwed taxpayers for access to their pits and infrastructure. For your benefit let me repeat - nobody's suggesting they're perfect. Newsflash - Telstra exists as a public, for profit company in a capitalist society. They aren't immune from criticism, nor is their social contribution undeserving of credit. Looked up the Telstra Foundation yet?

        • I think we are flogging a dead horse.

You think corporate social responsibility is innately virtuous and altruistic.

We're a bit more skeptical. Telstra is trying to raise their reputation for commercial benefit. Which is fine. I don't care.

        • Here's an interesting piece of Telstra management.

          Thanks Bill, that was good.
Not sure what the vintage is, but i'd say around 2005 when Sol & his amigo's arrived. This is about when the big T went pretty feral in terms of trying to pressure workers onto individual contracts.

It's a remarkably cynical document - assumes the managers are driven solely by the prospect of personal financial reward, which was dead wrong in many cases.

Note especially the reference on page 21: "You work with these CTs everyday and you will know their personal circumstances". Whoa - don't tell the boss you've just arranged a mortgage or had a kid!

I think we are flogging a dead horse.

          Yeah OK Bill.
          Until next time.

        • You're kidding. Because I don't agree with your cynical view of corporations and your broad brush labelling of all their benevolent activities as self-interested therefore I think it's all altruistic? Lol, couldn't be futher from the truth. I'd describe the argument as the difference between being a sceptic and a cynic. The web is full of narrow uninformed views, with people ascribing motive and character to others that they wouldn't have done to themselves. But you're correct about one thing - I don't agree that Telstra's action in offering this deal, nor in donating funds to charitable appeals, is driven primarily by commercial benefit.

        • Oh, it's not a Chocolate Cake :(

        • Yep FreckleNuts is such a high powered executive he sits on Ozbargain posting his views 24x7…

Must be a cushy job - maybe he works for daddy's company??

It's quite possible in this world that there is, right now, some poor bugger sheltering under that red awning (just up from the centre) thinking that "Climate change science is far from settled".

    • That neg i received is "absolute crap!".

      • Just like the current government and their withholding of information.

  • This is a voting magnet.

    • -6

I wonder how many are upvoting just to irritate some of the jaded individuals on here?

      • Why are you calling people wanting to call the Philippines jaded? What is wrong with you?

  • There are thousands of Filipino-Australians so it is not a surprise that we like this show of support from Telstra.

  • Thanks Telstra.

  • Note: All calls to the Philippines will be debited from your account (mobile) and re-credited in 72 hours…Make sure you have credit if you need to call frequently. Not sure how it works with landlines?

  • It's hard to believe that this only has 690 votes considering the lack of a reddit-like system of automatic vote snuffing.

THIS SHOULD BE MARKED AS EXPIRED AS IT ENDED AT 6AM TODAY

    Current time = 9:46am

  • Shouldn't this deal get 3rd place in the Historical Most Popular Deals category on the Stats & Records page?
