Usenet or Something Similar

Hey all,

I had a look and I couldn't find anyone asking/discussing this…

I'm looking for a torrenting / usenet service. Preferably something with VPN / SSL.
Is there a good deal going for a 1TB non-expiring block? I'd like to try before I buy.

Thanks,

Usenet is dead in 2013. Most of the decent (if not all) indexers have been shut down so unless you want to trawl through junk headers yourself every hour find yourself a decent tracker or three and a seedbox. Even a half decent tracker ups files faster than Usenet and also has the benefit of P2P rips which may never hit Usenet.

    • Do you have any decent trackers you'd recommend?

I'm not in a position to be able to seed.
Would you recommend getting a seedbox?
Can you recommend any seedbox hosting providers?

Definitely consider getting a seedbox. You can check up some good providers here:

        https://opentrackers.org/links/seedboxes/

As for trackers, you can start with public trackers and perhaps get an invite through people you meet on forums or irc. You can also sign up on occasional open registration days.

        • Awesome! Thank you. I'm checking it out now…

I've got a home NAS setup with Sabnzbd, Sick Beard using usenet for TV shows. I rarely miss anything, as long as I let it download newly aired shows immediately. There's always bittorrent for the occasional gaps. Plus no uploading means no potential sharing suits. To each their own.

    • I'm running servers at home (and elsewhere). This is why I can't seed. Bandwidth is already at its peak.

I'm aware of Sick Beard but I've never heard of Sabnzbd before.

  • Usenet rules!!!

  • seedbox is pretty damn good. I havent automated AUTO ftp downloads, but files are automatically scheduled for download from a series of rules.

    $6/mo

  • I use a dedicated server from OVH for around $40 a month. That has a 1TB of space, plus a TB as RAID 1 so I won't have to redownload everything. Transfers are via SFTP with AES 256 encryption with a SHA hash so all ISP's see are meaningless transfers of bits. I would avoid semi slots, as they are nearly always oversold and sloooooooow, if not the UI than SFTP'ing the files across. Dedi servers have consistent speed, period. As always the more you pay the better the quality - speed, hardware. I uploaded 500GB in 2 days on hot files. Simply can't do that in Aus unless you have a really really good connection.

    • OVH are Sold out. I have started thinking about a dedicated sever.
What is your opinion of a dedicated seed box? They seem to be a lot cheaper (than $40).

      • are they dedicated? or shared? My seedbox offers dedicated hdds for $50/mo

  • Dedicated as in full resources, not just HDD's. You don't want to share anything as speeds will randomly tank. OVH US currently has the KS 1 for sale/rent.

    • I suppose it depends what you're doing, but it's never been an issue for me. Even if it does tank, it's a seedbox.

      • My box can sustain 11MB/s for hours on end seeding. Impossible with an oversold shared slot. SFTP speeds are rock solid, no fluctuations. Its not "Even if it does tank, it's a seedbox", its a crappy provider you are with.

  • I've been using Usenet for a long time and love it. I use Sabnzbd with Astraweb and Tweeknews however my current indexer has been offline for 2 days now due to changing servers does anyone use a good indexer they can send me an invo to please! :) I can reciprocate with an invo to mine if they ever get back up and running(I think they will)

Don't know why people are suggesting Usenet is dead this year - clearly not the case but it's true most of the good FREE indexers are going by the wayside - it just means you have to pay for one (usually only a once off fee anyway).

I use www.smackdownonyou.com and it works fantastically; newznab compatible, great sorting and custom feeds etc.

    • Do you pay for smackdown? Whats the cost?

  • even good indexers (such as nzbs.org, dognzb and nzb.su) cannot compete with the quality control and selection of the big private trackers.
