  • Ok will be buying a new GFX Card, the choices: 7970, 280X, 680

Which should I choose if they are all around the $300 mark ?

    For BF4 @ 1080p…

I'd go with the 680 if you get it at $300. Check comparisons over here:

      http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU13/583

      • Main reasons for all this confusion: AMD Mantle

Now with a BF4 Mantle update around the corner, who knows how much better a 280x will be ?, but the 680 beats most 7970s…

        • +1

I understand. I still would go with the 680. If you want to upgrade in the future, you can simply add another 680 in SLI and you've got a hell of a system upgrade.

However, if ALL you are going to be doing is play BF4 then you might want to consider getting a used 7970/7950 from the forum or elsewhere for about ~$250

but the 680 beats most 7970s…

          No it doesn't.

In fact the 7970 beats the 680 in more games:

If you want to upgrade in the future, you can simply add another 680 in SLI and you've got a hell of a system upgrade.

Aside from the immense power considerations and possible cooling issues (which entails more money), as well as motherboard compatibility (two 16x speed PCI-E 2.0 slots or two 8x PCI-E 3.0 slots); there is also the issue of scaling and micro-stuttering, which is still very problematic with multi-GPU setups given that a majority of games are ported to the PC/not developed with multi-GPU in mind and that SLI/CF profiles are far from perfect.

So no, it's not a guaranteed "doubling" of performance by any stretch; only in theoretical benchmarks.

Also, who's to say you'll even be able to find another GTX 680 for a reasonable price in 5-8 months time? They've been out of production for a while now (hence the clearance deals). ~$350 is realistically the lowest the GTX 680 is ever going to be, and for the price of two, you could have a 7990/GTX 780/R9 290X; any of those will future-proof you for the next 2 years at least.

Good points on the SLI issue.

Depends on the OP's needs then I guess. Mantle+value vs physx, cuda and other features.

          Must decide on his/her needs.

      BF4 benchmarks:
      http://www.bf4blog.com/battlefield-4-retail-gpu-cpu-benchmar…
The GTX 680 loses out to the un-OC'ed 7970 by a smidge.

A GTX 680 and a 7970 are basically neck-and-neck; it really depends on the games you'll be playing as to whether or not one will be better than the other (and even then you're looking at a 5FPS bonus max, depending on the game).

With Mantle support being added for BF4 fairly soon, I'd go with a 7970 if your primary focus is maxxing out BF4. A 280X is just a re-badged 7970; not worth the price hike.

      • Oh ok so a 280x doesn't have anything extra that supports this Mantle API thingy ?, as I thought the 7970 lacked in something and wouldn't support Mantle… :S

I feel its 7970 for me as BF4 with AA pushes past the 680…

        • +1

All GCN architecture cards and beyond will support Mantle (i.e. 77xx, 78xx, 79xx, etc.) as well as the latest Rx 2xx series.

  • ugh, already have a evga 680, urge to SLI rising…

    • I want to do the same with my Gigabyte 670, but i think I have missed my chance. I know i can use a different manufacturer, but prices for 680s are the same as 670s

  • Wow the Evga Sig 2 is only $1000 on ebay
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/EVGA-GF-GTX-680-SC-2GB-GDDR5-Sign…

  • Hey rep, you have the iChill and reference prices mixed up

    • woops, sorry about that! all fixed now.

  • Bugger, just boughht a 670 off you a couple of weeks ago :(

  • added to my cart and then decided to see how much some of these are brand new. is saving $75 really worth it when these are refurbs and the new ATI + 700 series cards are dropping prices of new 600 series cards?

    • Probably not. I wouldn't risk it myself. Just bought the 670 I posted on PCCG. 3 year warranty..

  • EVGA refurbs… ? This doesn't sound like these cards are dependable and even with a warranty, it just sounds like they will breakdown again and who wants the trouble to return….

    • +2

All cards are thoroughly tested by EVGA quality assurance and backed by one of the best companies in the business to deal with in terms of customer service and warranty.

Should anything go wrong with a discontinued card like these they will likely be replaced with upgrades. Not to mention of all the EVGA returbs we already sold, there hasn't been a single report of a fault.

  • Hey evatech,

Was that a $10 rebate per card or per order?
