Go bananas! 66% off in Sydney

50
  • Freshco fruitshop, Westfield Hornsby
  • Coles, Westfield Hornsby

$0.99 / kg for bananas.

I don't know who started this latest banana price war, but it's 66% off the $2.99 price still charged this week at my local (just visited) Woolworths.

Mentioned here in case there was a special deal at the Sydney Markets (e.g. a good deal from Freshco independent grocer, not Coles).

Hopefully this is a lot more widespread - offered at your local grocer!

  • Whilst 99c a kilo is a good price I have not seen bananas price at over $1.50/Kg in Melbourne (Queen vic Market) for a long time. Support your local green grocer or fresh produce market. The big 2 supermarkets are parasites in my opinion and have done nothing to benefit the consumer other than reduce choice and increase the amount of cheap imported and inferior products. Thankfully the Australian banana industry is protected from inferior and disease ridden imports.

Support the greengrocer, indeed. I only put up the Coles name as most people have that option - but hopefully can find a local grocer instead.

Bottom line is that the indy grocer can afford the Westfield rent, deserves the business and is doing promos like this regularly.

I know this isn't a 95% off bargain that everyone wants, but it's still worthwhile checking your grocer as bananas are so versatile and tasty.

This is a much better deal than what Woolies offers in my nearby suburb (without the indy competitor) - it really is 66% off the usual current local price.

Aldi also have banana's for 99c a kilo last time I checked.

Sounds like a bit of predatory pricing is happening! Yes Support your local friend!

  • My local ALDI has 99c per kilo as well

  • Yeah I'm on the Central Coast just north of Sydney but local places up here sell it for 99c/KG already, I bought a bunch from a corner store on Wednesday for 98c/KG and they tasted better than the ones from Coles/Aldi.
