[QLD] Kent Pumpkin Whole $0.48/kg + Delivery ($0 in-Store/ C&C) @ Carina & Chandler Megafresh IGA Local Grocer

200

Much better value than Colesworth, and you're supporting a local fruit shop :)

Was $1.48 - Coles and Woolies hover around $3-5 / kilo, depending on the season.

I've been shopping here for years and the pumpkins are often around $1.50- 90c / kilo, this is the lowest i've seen them. You can also store an un-cut pumpkin for 3-4 months if you buy a few! Imo they're best roasted as wedges skin on

Note (2nd Feb): Changed name to Kent, same name that Coles / Woolies uses for the same type of pumpkin

It was $3 per kilo yesterday at my local Coles in Brisbane. That would make it over $25 for a whole pumpkin of course depending on the size. I was asking myself what ratio of population is rich enough to afford that.

    • $25 for a whole pumpkin

      That's nuts

Usually throw the seeds out in the back garden in Brissie & pick so many pumpkins.

Looks like a Jap pumpkin which I understand to be a different species than a Japanese pumpkin.

I think you're right. But it's all a bit confusing.

Jap = Kent pumpkin. Jap stands for just another pumpkin.
      Japanese pumpkin = Kabocha (squash).
Jap/Kent pumpkin is apparently related to the Kabocha family.

In Japan, "kabocha" may refer to either this squash, to the Western pumpkin, or indeed to other squashes.[2] In Australia, "Japanese pumpkin" is a synonym of Kent pumpkin, a variety of winter squash (C. moschata).

I think that Wikipedia article is incorrect. Source isn’t even readable. I believe they were confused by the name sounding like Japanese. Look at photos of the two they are not visually alike.

Unless it’s a Queensland thing to call Jap/Kent pumpkins as Japanese.

Edit: I found the paper here: https://agrifutures.com.au/wp-content/uploads/publications/0…

Maybe JAP really is just short for Japanese, I never knew…

Yes you're correct, that was the name originally used in the title / store. (I think the title got reported as offensive… Anyways, its just a pumpkin and don't want to offend people)

      • Kent Pumpkin is more friendly I feel

What's wrong with calling it a Jap pumpkin?? Yes it was called a Jap or Japanese pumpkin in the 90s and beyond, until the PC brigade stepped in!!! If that's what it is, then let's call it that! I don't see how it can be offensive, it's a bloody pumpkin FFS!
