    (sudent price)
    (normal price)

Are you inferring that students aren't normal?

    • sudent(sic) aren't normal.

    • students r abnormally normal ;)

    • Using the word 'normal' in a context where it's not a synonym for 'usual' is abnormal.

Got excited for a moment, then I realised it was the old Surface Pro.
The new model still starts at $1019 (no student discount available).

using these small, reflective screen devices will ruin your eyes and posture

This is a strange thing to say coming from a person who pos votes for

Kindle E-Book deals (constant reading on a smaller device causes more eye strain)
7" tablets deals (much smaller device, more eye strain and bad posture)
Video games deals (not good for your health, should be outside exercising)
Headphone deals (not good for your ears, can cause hearing damage)
Alcohol deals (not good for your liver)

Not impressed. I bought the surface pro 128 only 3 months ago!!!

You expect the price to go up on superseded models when a new model is released?

      • +1

Judging by how poorly they have been selling it could be a collectors item very soon!

  • new models aren't that much different from the old model anyways.

    • +1

There is one massive difference, battery life. That is by far the biggest weakness of the original Surface Pro.

    • Battery is much better on the new ones, extra couple of hours is handy

  • That's 3 portable dyson vacuumes

  • Battery life is significantly improved… That's what makes it for me… If you don't need more than 5hrs battery then this will.be a good deal…

While I want a Surface Pro, I'm not willing to pay over $300-400 for one, especially now that it's the older model and the new Intel processors are coming and will have Surface Pro competitors using their silicon.

I just want to be able to have portable Civ 5 on a tablet.

    • ..Pretty ridiculous expectation for an Core I5, Wacom, decent screen etc. In short keep dreaming.

Trust that the guy who doesn't know about the upcoming Bay Trail silicon and up votes this deal to neg my post (which is to help people to not buy this piece of overpriced garbage when there are really exciting options in the near horizon).

        http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/08/intel-bay-trail-benchmark…
"Moving the resolution up to 1080p, the native resolution of the reference tablet, Bay Trail yielded 14,174 in Ice Storm. For context, that's not far off half the score of the full-fat laptop-class chip inside the current Microsoft Surface Pro — a chip that burns a lot more power the power of Bay Trail and doesn't last nearly as long on a charge."

The real kicker… they are going to be dirt cheap and have huge battery life increases over the unwieldy i5 in the Surface Pro. There's already OEMs showcasing tablets, ultrabooks and laptops around the $300 mark with it, and yes they run Windows 8.1 and some even have a Wacom digitiser.

        • These are not the same thing, the Bay Trail is not near the current generation of laptop chips. The Surface Pro 2 which is not using the top of the line processors yields 42,623 in Ice Storm while Surface Pro yields 41,984. Also the Bay Trail chip used was the Z3770, which is the fastest Bay Trail chip and a lot of devices will use slower ones.
          http://www.anandtech.com/show/7440/microsoft-surface-pro-2-r…

The 'unwieldy i5' is an amazing piece of technology invented by the same company that bring us the Bay Trail, the Haswell i5 is more powerful than previous generations and uses less power than before.

You throw around the $300 mark as if it is fact, please tell everyone about this upcoming Bail Trail based device that have a 1080p screen and a Wacomm digitiser. It doesn't exist.

          • Dell Venue 8 $299 US for 32GB, 8 inch screen at 1280 x 800, no Wacomm digitiser.
          • ASUS T100 $359 US for 32GB, 10.1 inch screen at 1366 x 768, no Wacomm digitiser.
          • Acer Iconia W4 $330 US for 32GB, 8 inch screen at 1280 x 800, no Wacomm digitiser, .
          • Toshiba Encore $399 for 32GB, 8 inch screen at 1280 x 800, no Wacomm digitiser.
          • Fujitsu Stylistic Q584 $1200 for 64GB (Japanese model), 10.1-inch at 2560 x 1600, multi touch display with a digitizer layer supporting pen input.

The ASUS T100 which uses Bay Trail chip, gets an Ice Storm score of 9,830. Which is impressive, but the Surface Pro 2 is over 4 times faster and comes with a host of other features the ASUS T100 doesn't have.

        • Thanks, pretty much covered it. Unreasonable to cherry pick the very cheapest config when it isn't even close in terms of capabilities when the very best bench you can find is -half- the performance, let alone the screen etc

  • am willing to buy one but holding up for sony tap 11….almosst same price and spec as of surface pro 2 but much thinner and lighter with 11.6" screen (however I prefer 10.6").

    • I've been thinking about this too, been waiting for the Pro 2, but I'm not so sure now that 10.6" will be big enough (esp for a fully fledged "laptop"). Would consider tap 11 but the keyboard setup makes look almost impossible for lab/couch work if you wanted to (or really awkward at the least).

Considering Yoga 11/Sony Flip if pricing is decent (or even comes to AUS).
