Just got an email from adioso alerting me of a cheap price from Melbourne to Honolulu departing on the 21 of feb 2014.
You might to check around for a cheap return fare as the one I found on March.

whats a normal return trip go for?
This seems to about 1/2 normal price from what I can see
23rd Jan to 7th Feb only $537 return. Looks good if you want 2 weeks.

How much is it Hawaii to la? Do they have cheap flight?
Can get them for around $340 AUD for a return ticket with Allegiant Air. $540 return with Hawaiian Airlines.

Quite a few choices in that price range if you click on the "month view", ie depart 21, 24, 28 Feb and come back 3, 7, 14, or 17 March and it's the same airfare. $349 going, $278 return. Thanks.
