  • very good price - MSY is more for a 1333 kit than that…

  • What on earth is "gaming RAM"?
I'm guessing faster than standard, but too unreliable to use in a server.
    i.e. overclocked?

This Ram has EVO on it, so it must be fast like the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO.

      • In other words "manic" RAM … sounds logical ;-)

Seems to be using Potenza tires as well.

    • Yeah, higher-clocked/faster RAM. 'Probably' more prone to issues than lower binner RAM.

  • gaming ram
    super tall heat spreaders

Who the hell markets ram as "gaming" anyway? Lol.

    • Its pretty common; people like to overclock their RAM which causes them to generate more heat, so they need more effective heat spreaders.

        Ah, that makes sense. Thanks.
With fins like that, they should add go-faster stripes too.

Taller doesn't always mean more effective; these heat spreaders look decorative more so than effective.

People who'd oc their ram would most likely be using a cooler than wouldn't accommodate tall heat spreaders.

Also, even the most hardcore of overclockers don't usually cause their RAM to heat up significantly more than normal. Voltages on RAM are usually set pretty close to what they are rated for. Reliability of the RAM sticks is the most important (as well as compatibility). The benefits of overclocking RAM is minimal at best anyways — it's only for benching numbers.

Tall RAM heatsinks = fail :(

    • I'd have had to remove these to put that new hard drive in a couple of days ago. Luckily my RAM is sensibly sized, nice and "short".

  • GeIL Evo Potenza 16G Kit is decent price, Umart has them for $189. Anyone used these before?

  • Is there a game anywhere that actually runs any faster with 16G of RAM at the moment?

I thought 8G still offered no measurable advantage (though it might once console ports designed for the new consoles appear).

    • Well RAM isn't so much for gaming. The only ones who should invest in lots of RAM should be those that actually use them. That is, people who uses lot of VMs for example.

Just as a heads up, a lot of these tall heat spreaders RAM sticks will get in the way of aftermarket heat sinks for the CPU.

  • I gotta concur, I bought a pc with a special heatsink cooler and also some overclocked RAM with heatspreaders and when i went to add 2 more modules to the 2 empty ram slots i had, i was not able to because the RAM heatsinks were way too large and got in the way of the aftermarket CPU cooler.

Is 4Gigs still all that a game can use? Lets say when i do gaming, i pretty much shut everything else down on that pc besides the game, Does that mean that game is pretty much getting all the ram it can process or are games able to use more than 4 gigs now? I thought 4 gigs was the amount most games can use unless its a specially programmed 64bit game?

    • Yeah. 4gb per application (if it was properly 64 bit coded, then it could be more)

So 8gb is nice because most apps are 32bit and can therefore use their 4gb without swapping memory around for your operating system and whatever else is running in the background.

More than 8gb is pretty useless for 99% of people.

Currently I run 4gb and don't have issues, but I would like 8gb. With prices as they are, I'm debating getting 2x8gb sticks anyway.
