  • How are these phones so cheap?

    • They were just made redundant since they are old stock. (I work for a telstra store). Tempted to buy a few for the younger cousins.

      • +26

Tempted to buy a few for the younger cousins.

C'mon they're not that stupid these days, they'll know it's crappy lol

        • the distant cousins in Vietnam won't care as long as it calls. But true, will probably find a more decent phone for em!

        • +1

C'mon be a decent cousin and get them at least y201's or Y300's easy for you with AU$.

  • +4

they're single core low ram VGA resolution smartphones running android 2.2

    • +1

Would still be better than the piece of crap nokia I bought as a backup phone (and $5 cheaper to boot).

      • +1

Depends.. if the backup is only used for texts calls then a cheap nokia might be better because they last for ever with a single charge, whereas something like this needs to be charged quite frequently even with low use.

  • Most importantly - does it come with the Nordic Zombie Bugdroid??

    • +2

i want to know this, only reason to get it :D

  • unlocked?

    • +3

No, but Bagman should be unable to lock this for you https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/56629

      • +3

+1 bagman does a great job at the best price

    • Should be free unlock on these if I recall correctly.

      • -1

early ZTEs with 12 digit unlock are (as are USB dongles), I doubt very much this one would be, likely 16 digit

  • Reminds me of the Telstra UNO phone. It wasn't the best. Would suit younger children that need a cheap phone.

    • +2

seems a fair bit faster thank god
Also make a decent phone for embedding in your car as a GPS tracker and interface to bluetooth OBD system, even be able to use it for emergency calls in nextG only areas if you arent with them.

  • Is this similar to the previously advertised $39 Huawei Y201 smart phone in Coles?

    • +5

No, not nearly as good, I'm told.

    • +3

y201 has more CPU power,so is faster, more memory, so is faster and more capable, and a newer Android version, so is more capable.
I would choose it over this every time at $19 vs $39 unless I had very specific requirements (like say, using it as a remote for a multimedia box, or bedside alarm or incoming text notification screen or some other oddball usage) where the lower price/specification was fine.

    • +1

It's the same 800MHz CPU as Y201, same 512M RAM, same 3.5" screen and come with 2.3 Gingerbread, not 4.0 as Y201. Overall it's very similar in hardware. Just ZTE somewhat bulk and heavier. Usually ZTE is not as good built quality as Huawei. But Huawei Y201 is an exception. Problems of randomly auto restart when heavy program running and stuck when surfing. I tried 2 of those before, same problem.

  • What are the specs can't seem to find them DX
    oh found them

  • seems like good deal, too bad its past 5pm here in WA so most coles stores are closed right now, here is hoping they still have stock when i go check tomorrow, getting 1 for mum she still using very bad monochrome phone with keypads and its terrible to use so any smartphone will be a upgrade for her

    • +4

Wow, different state trading laws make a huge difference. I live in a little town of 15,000 people in NSW and my local Coles will be open till midnight tonight. And the Woolies in the adjoining town of 4000 people is open till 10pm.
I like the convenience, but I bet plenty of shop workers in WA like having their Saturday nights off.

      • +1

Where I live we only recently got sunday trading, and you thought the world was gonna end in some people eye's. Some people don't like change, on sunday still most places don't open and its pretty dead. I'm amazed kmart actually opens till 9 every night now, and aldi opens till 8 which is awesome. :)

  • got one for my 12yo daughter at target at that great throw out earlier this year…for $9.
does a great job with aldi $15 prepaid. perfect 1st phone. very solid compared to the y201 which i have.

  • can we upgrade it to Android 4.0?

  • -1

Does this phone have support for an external antenna?

  • -1

These phones make great prezzies for young kids, they wouldn't be able to tell the slightest diffence from iphone and these (5+ year olds)

    • +1

Sorry that's BS. They demanded the latest and greatest then and it was extremely obvious.

    • +1

Well maybe your kids but most would know the difference.. LOL

    • +12

Put an apple sticker on the back. Problem solved.

      • -1

        and pre-crack the screen

  • +5

I bought this phone for $39 a few months ago.

The internal memory is only 27 mb, which means you can't have it connected to the internet via wifi or data because it will try to update google play store and hangouts. These updates which cannot be moved to the sd card will cripple the phone.

So technically this is just a dumb phone unless you download and install the apks manually and stay offline. Even then you can only install one app before it starts to mention that internal memory is low.

I'm sure you can get more stable dumb phones for $19 if we look hard enough that run on 850mhz.

    • "internal memory is only 27 mb"
You can't even do the Play store update??? There is zero room for any apps??
      C'mon, you are kidding right?

      • +4

No he's not kidding, I bought one of these and returned it for a refund as it couldn't even update the system apps due to not enough memory.

        • +5

          OK I hear you.
So in other words this thing is completely useless !
          Whats everyone so excited about?
          55 pos votes for a confirmed P.O.S.

    • from the ausdroid review page "For the first time in a long time using Android phones I actually encountered issues installing applications because of lack of space. With only Tweakdeck, Pocket Casts, Zombies Run, Pocket and My Tracks installed all of which were using the Move to SD card function, I was left with a grand total of 26MB out of 170MB of space and was then confronted numerous times with the Out of Space error when trying to install anything else."

so does it have 170MB of space or 27MB? also does the pack come with any size SD card or do i have to provide my own. as long as she can use browser to check lotto and news sites and maps to find places i think should be fine. also how do you go about getting it unlocked as she uses woolworths mobile and thats optus network as far as i know, sorry but this is first droid phone i will ever be buying as i am still using iphone4 was going to give her my phone and get myself i nice new phone but nothing really grabbing me right now

    • Austerity is the mother of invention.

  • That's a nice gift for wifey.

    • -3

      Or Russian girlfriend.

    • if you are trying to get divorced? :P

  • +2

How does this go with Fifa 14?

    • +11

GREAT as long as its the other team that uses it…….

  • do these take a mini SIM?

  • Would this run XBMC remote app?

  • -1

probably good for ozbargaineers who use the hungry jacks shake and win and the KFC app but by the sound of it you can't download any apps because there is no room

  • Well the solution is root and uninstall anything that is not required. You can probably uninstall google play store for starters to save room. You can install apks instead of a direct install from google.

Beyond that its not worth the time spending 3 hours figuring how how to install a custom rom on this thing.

    • +2

Not when the y201 is 39 bucks, even if this phone was free it's a false economy if you use apps

  • -1

Found one but Coles lady wanted ID, which I don't feel comfortable giving. How do you get a phone from Coles without ID?

    • +9

Grab it and run as fast as you can.

      • ahh but if they catch you then your ID gets taken anyway

    • +1

U can't buy any phone without id.

      • what? most stores don't care anymore.

when you register the sim card you get asked for some, but not when buying unless its a Phone store.

        • Ow don't care, nor do tgg, Australia post do. Some do, some don't. The ones that do are annoying.

        • +1

Annoying maybe, following the rules almost definitely

      • Both Coles stores near me don't ask for ID.

      • U can't buy any phone without id.

Sometimes you can, but the NSA PRISM / DSD etc will soon ID your phone based on your network of contacts and locations you visit. (Hopefully its just the computers doing that, and not human eyes.)

  • +1

I just want that cool android toy!

    • It would be worth more than the phone

  • Just been to both Coles stores in Wodonga and the staff at both stores had never heard of these phones at this price. Am I missing something?

    • +1

Don't ask for the Smart Touch 2, or even for the boost ZTE, ask for the "Jump Smart" boost prepaid mobile. Hardly any of the staff know anything about mobile phones so just make sure you get them to look through all of thier draws before you let them tell you they don't have any.

  • The one on sale at Coles is Jump Smart BOOST mobile. I bought one in North Rocks. But its screen was painted with a man who wear a black T shirt with Boost logo at the back. I try to remove it, but it is very hard. Anybody has done it before, please tell me How.

  • I'm debating whether or not I should get one of these or huawei y201 I'm only going to be using it for music and stuff ?

    • +2

Y201 for the love of god y201
this boost/zte only has 25mb of internal storage so unless you want to use whatever awful stock music player there is on it get the y201 and then you can do other things too. Also take a look at Twist music player if your after a good one.

      • Yeah I've been using a y201 as a spare phone and there good I'll grab another one of them also yeah I've got doubletwist on all my devices and I love it but I mainly use Google play music because I have all access

      • Well I've got 98MB here (out of the box), and 103MB after uninstalling twitter and facebook (the only two apps you can uninstall without root it seems).

103MB is still a pittance of course. If it can rooted we should be able to slim things down even more.

I have an SGS3 and a Nexus 7 to properly satiate my android needs, but $19 for a new little toy to figure out how to root and mess around with seems like a fair deal to me.

        • Well that's a completely different use
you want it to mess root/rom with I kinda do too.
but for a normal person 98/27mb is too tiny for pretty much even basic use. I got the LGL3 e400f for rooting/romming got ics on it with 1gb system and it's quite usable. but when it was 150mb useable on stock I was able to install like 5 apps.

  • thank u op. 2 left at frankston coles.

    • well they'll be gone this thursday if it's centrelink day

  • thanks op, got the T760 today. If you guys are wondering how to unlock, I paid $8.9 usd to http://www.oneunlock.com/en/tools/solution/zte-telstra-andro… . I received the code immediately and successfully unlocked it with ease.
