This time next year, OLEDs era will be in full swing. At this late stage of the game, I'd keep my money a year longer.
Besides, the shimmering I've seen anything solid-coloured on STs is very noticeable and disturbing.

Oled will not be mainstream for a few years yet.

Lol OLED… first one was stucked 11" for QUITE a few years. Now they will be full swing at 50". Great new! only if it ever comes true

      • Sleeping under a rock, +55" OLEDs are already available? Currently, it's a matter of process improvement (of Direct Emission and WRGB competitors), optimisation and mass production leading to lower prices.

        • well we will come back in a year to see if we can get 55" OLED at $1,100 price point (Mainstream right?)

        • if we can get 55" OLED at $1,100 price point (Mainstream right?)

Unlikely, considering it'd only be 2nd generation consumer OLED TVs, but this is independent of availability, choice and promotion - the "full swing" I'm referring to.

    • More chance of 4k tv than oled being in full swing. Both will be aimed at a different audience. It would be 5 years before 4k/uhdtv/oled are all standard and mainstream.

Having said that, Sony's 55 inch 4k tv has dropped 2k since release only months ago.

        So it's now a 2K TV? :P

      • yeh its amazing what competition will do…..the Sony has a pretty sweet picture though although the shell is questionable

Fine print says does not apply with other offers. So if the tv on a catalogue special already, no further 20% off.

    • Good point! Any one had any luck getting the discounted price at their local Myer?

      • Confirmed with Myer Sydney City it's $1,299.

  • 4k TVs.. Pfft. They simply aren't big enough to notice the benefits. Not that droves won't get sucked in just like with 3D and smart TVs, which 90% never utilise. 4k projectors, maybe.

    • 4k TVs.. Pfft.

Yeah, Retina display.. Pfft. Oh, wait.

      • Retina… that level of Wisdom…

      • Apples with oranges. Wake up.

        • Apples with oranges.

Huh? Both increased pixel density seen by viewer.

        • One is held closely to the eyes or viewed at close range, the other is viewed typically at 3m+. You simply will not notice the difference between 4k and a 1080p bluray on a panel TV. But those figures you find so special are what sell more TVs. It's purely progression to sell more TVs, get sucked in if you feel the need. 1080p is simply brilliant. There's so little room for improvement, no matter what stats say, our eyes can't see it.

Technology will give us better panels with 'real' noticeable benefits now, not resolution.
