Canon Pixma MG4260 Multifunction Wi-Fi Duplex Printer - $69 @ Officeworks

120

Lowest price on static ice at the moment. A fairly good deal for a duplex multifunction from Canon with copier, wi-fi etc I thought. Disclaimer: I gave up on inkjets because they are a total rip-off for anything more than the occasional printout. But for light use, it's fine + the scanners and copiers are good.

How much would a good Laser printer cost and what's the average price of laser ink?

    • 'good' is subjective…

I paid around $300 for my 2600n cartridges cost around $90 per colour and are good for around 2000 pages.

I still use my inkjet, but only for photos or to print onto CDs/DVDs

That's really hard to say because it depends on what features you need. A mono-laser wireless duplex might be $110 on a good day, but a multifunction mono wireless duplex laser will take you over the $250+ mark. I bought my Brother 7860DW for $280 I think. A colour would likely send you over $350-$400 or more. There was one brother model which was in the 300 range though, I forget which.

Laser cartridges are a bit more expensive (maybe $40-$60? Don't quote me on that), and more so for colour, but the page yield is far higher, so that the per page cost tends to be lower. For example, the high yield brother B&W cartridge is good for 7000 pages while the standard yield is 2000 something. High yield inkjets are rarely over 700. But the price difference is definitely not 10x.

So it kind of really boils down to how much printing you do.

      • If you do a bit of shop around even the colour laser one is not necessarily expensive.

I recently bought one of the Dell C1765nfw which is selling for $376. It does all the multifunction stuff plus Wi-Fi but without duplex.

Bring in the RACV 15% discount brings it to $319.6.

But Dell also has this Trade to Save program for which this printer is eligible for a $100 cashback, provided that you pack away your old working printer in a box and send it away.

So effectively it costs me $219.6, and yes, the old junk is taken care of as well. But I agree
the toner would be a tricky business, especially for a not-so-common one like this.

Meh, just get yourself a (quality) CISS ink system. You can print all day with one of those and actually makes the cost of a colour inkjet very reasonable.

  • 9c at Officeworks is fine for my wallet and conscience.

Inkjet replacement cartridges is a rort… you pay through the nose to replace cartridges, or dont pay and fill up landfill with an otherwise perfectly working printer.

If I had to print colour every day, I'd be buying a colour laser as they've come down a lot in last few years.
The replacement cartridges are expensive, but you get much better yield per $ spent.

  • Anyone own this printer able to provide some feedback? I've been looking for a new printer to buy for uni, need a printer that will last and not too expensive per page. I could only find a general unboxing video on youtube when i tried to google a review.

  • I am at university and I print daily (with an average of 2 print taks). Each printing task takes up most of the page in color (I print 6 slides per page) for 6 A4 pages. I use a brother mfc-825dw. It is running on refillable inks I bought at a computer market swap meet. It costed $20 for refillable cartriges ($20 gave you 4 full refillable cartridges, and 4 ink refills each with 50 mls). I bought my set mid last year, and I still haven't finished the $20 worth of ink. And I only have refilled them once. =D
