Sony Bravia 55" 4K Ultra HD LED TV $3974/$3854 Harvey Norman

180

Who has been waiting for a 4K tv under $4k?

I saw online Harvey Norman have the Sony Ultra HD LED Bravia 55" for $4094

2 bonus offers at the moment:
BONUS $120 Harvey Norman gift card
Additional bonus $120 gift card if you 'recycle' your old CRT tv, working or not, most people have one lying around.

Brings price down to $3854

Is this a bargain? Compared to competitors its around $600-1000 cheaper before the bonus.
(actually while typing this up, the Good Guys dropped thier price to $4084. no bonus offers though)

If you have the $5 welcome code from the website, that's another $5 off. $3849!

Free pickup in store, or enter your Suburb for delivery cost, mine was $49

I for one will not be purchasing this. Its crazy money!

I would wait until next year when history suggests Sony are likely to offer a free PS4 with their TVs.

Plus there isn't really anything that'll use 4K now and the tech will likely improve considerably in the coming couple of years.

Funnily enough the main benefit to 4K TV's at the moment is the ability to watch Passive 3D in full 1080p resolution.
I was sort of tempted for a second for this, but in reality there's no real point to me buying one yet. Maybe in twelve months or so when the next batch of models start to reduce in price.

        • Even funnier, the JB guy was trying to sell me one until I said 'yeah it would be great if only there was content to watch' to which he replied 'yeah there are 3 4k movies at the moment, Total recall is one and I don't remember the other two'

Nice I can use my Harvey Norman gift vouchers!

    Waiting for 4K bluray content.

    • Wouldn't the be over a few discs though?
Unless there are new types of BD that hold 100GB plus?

      • No apparently the current format should have enough space.

        http://hometheater.about.com/od/hometheaterglossary/g/4k-Res…

Read the paragraph 4K Implementation Issues

        • Pretty much comes under 'new types of BD'. At best it will be Blu-Ray version 2, but it is probably better to give it a whole new name to avoid consumer confusion.

…and it doesn't exist and has no timeline for release.

      • It probably would, hobbit on 3D spans over 2 discs.

BD-XL, triple layer and holds 100gb. Still quite pricey, not sure when the industry will adopt it.

  • Wow,I did not know 4K already so close to us. The price is not that unreachable.

    • Price come down because it is still pointless - nothing in 4k to watch on it.

Cash Converters CRT TV sales will shoot up!

      Hard rubbish drives, lol!

meh wait a year and will be ever cheaper

    • Wait until xmas time and it will be cheaper than it is now. Plus with no content available why bother with a 4K TV. Looking forward to Samsung's UHD OLED TV though.

The current crop of Ultra HDTVs do not have HDMI 2.0. They only have HDMI 1.4 which can only do 2160p @ 30Hz max, while HDMI 2.0 supports 2160 @ 60Hz. Something to keep in mind…

    • +2

Sony have come out in the last few days saying that they can simply apply a firmware update to make their current 4K TV's HDMI 2.0 compatible. Still going to wait for TV's where it supports it out of the box though.

They haven't come out and said that Australia will get it though. As soon as the announcement was made the offical US sony website was updated to indicate that they'd get it at the end of this year.

Nothing has been confirmed for us

Update: I stand corrected, it has now been updated: http://www.sony.com.au/product/kd-55x9004A

  • 4K is a waste IMHO. Nothing broadcast or recorded in 4K, and unlikely to be in near future.

    • Once the bluray format is sorted its only a matter of time.

Lots of "Mastered in 4K" bluray content coming out from Sony already.

      • Sure it's only a matter of time, but how long really? Is there even a schedule for a 4K disc standard? Even after this is will be significant time delay before you see it really coming to the market.

      • Lots of "Mastered in 4K" bluray content coming out from Sony already.

It's still only 1080p though so if there is any quality improvement it will show on a full HD panel.

        • I think the point was that they can release these s 4K, if they ever sort out the standards and distribution channels.

    Thanks OP.
Finally I can watch my GoPro Black in 4k res.

    • At like 15fps? Sounds horrid

  • Pretty pointless before you have anything to play on it.

If you're desperate enough for 4k, you can get one for ~$1200 + del.
Quality might not be up there, but hell, you get all 8.2 million pixels.

Still cheaper than an Eizo monitor :)

  • Whats the bonus gift card offer for recycling your old CRT tv? Is it applicable to the purchase of this tv only or is it applicable to other tv purchases?

    • +1

      The recycle your old tv bonus is;
currently Harvey Norman have a promotion, with some items over $200 get a gift card, A $400 TV might have $20 card, $4000 tv has a $120 card…

the recycle is a 'double up' of the bonus offer. So its not just $120 for everyone.. if your bonus was $20, its now $40.. or $200, now $400..

I think most TV's currently on special at HN have this deal.

  • Reviews say the upscaling is very good.
I have viewed one in JB HiFi playing off a blue ray of a soccer match and there was much detail in the picture.
Maybe they would be good for displaying digital stills off an SD card or Google+.
I am very disappointed with the smartnesses of my Samsung Smart TV and image that is where the problems would lie with these 4k sets. (Slow low intelligence machines more frustrating than a tablet)
I imagined it would be better than a iMac 27" display and asked the sales guy whether it was IPS and what kind of colour gamut it had but he did not know. He said it looked dramatic at a Sony Seminar he attended and went on about needing to tap your phone against the remote to see an image. (Near field communication?)
I have only read a couple of reviews. They like it a lot but do not answer the questions I want answered about using it for other than 4k video.
Would it make Lee Sales look any better as I am really saddened how we have all these exotic TVs and yet the news and current affairs shows seem to be using vintage cameras and it is only when they go out of the studio that your TV presents a reasonable picture?

    • .. it is only when they go out of the studio that your TV presents a reasonable picture?

Reasonable? All the stations sacrifice bitrate to fit in more crappy channels. Most people don't seem to care, but I find all TV stations to be quite poor currently.
