Self explanatory really! Big W have the Philips Viva Collection Airfryer in this weeks catalogue for $178 - RRP is $329.95!

My mum purchased one of these a month or so ago at The Good Guys for a lot more than this (and they didn't have the black model), and she cooks almost everything in it. If you're looking for one, I doubt you'll find it cheaper anywhere else.

Went in to Big W Noarlunga tonight just before they closed, and they had a pallet with approx 15 of these on it. Get in quick as they're advertised as "limited stock" aka "We've only got a few, to suck you in - just like Coles and their $50 coffee machines :/"

  • I remember saw one at Coles clearance section I think is unknown band for a lot cheaper. Are they the same?

Can I use it to make Japanese tempura ?

    • Nah, very different. This is a Philips classic product.

    • +1

No way. I Can't see how good tempura can be done without deep fryer. It's good for prawn grill though.

    • It can do batter. However quality wise is better to deep fry

  • -1

I have had a no name one and it was waste of money. No idea what the Philips one is like.

Why go trough the hassle and go to Big W. Go straight away to Betta, TGG or HN and they will match

    • +12

Well, for a start, I was able to walk in, get exactly what I wanted at a price much lower than any of them have previously been selling it for, go straight to the self-serve checkout, and had my purchase within about 60 seconds of entering the store. No salespeople dicking me around, trying to earn a commission … no haggling for a price match - straight in, straight out.

… and looking at the GG & HN websites, it appears they only have the white models listed, which are different model numbers - great excuse to get out of a price match!

    • +10

Because it is better to reward businesses that advertise the lowest price instead of businesses that will only give you a better price when you point out someone else has a better price. Where would OzBargain be if everyone charged RRP but said they would price match.

  • is this good for pies ? i like my meat pies crunchy but don't want to use the oven for just one pie… :O

    • +1

I use a sandwich maker to heat pies, they are as good and crisp as out of the oven, it is quicker and uses less power.
Set the lid height so as not to crush the pie.

      • Will have to try that one day.

      • I do this with pizza!

I can't speak for this kind of Air Fryer but if speed (and solitude) is/are your concern, can't go past the Convection Tabletop Ovens that are becoming more ubiquitous (eg. the FlavorWave). I think Aldi had similar ones for $15 starting from last week onwards.

To make it even quicker for single/small items such as pies, fish fingers, doughnut and dimsims, I eschew the 12L glass bowl and use a stainless steel bowl that is just large enough to contain the food item. Pop the heating element head on top, piping hot crackly pie in 10-12 minutes. (to make it even quicker, you can 'cheat' by microwaving for 2 minutes, then put it in your makeshift 'oven/fryer' and be done from start to finish in 7 minutes because the tiny cavity takes no time to pre-heat)

IMHO, crumbed foods (fish sticks, chicken chippies) are elevated to mouth-gasms in these kind of convection fryers. (Yes, I'm a single guy :-p)

    • +1

Likewise, I heat my pies in the microwave for a couple of minutes, then a minute or two in the toaster oven to crisp up the pastry

  • I think one of the concerns I read about this airfryer was the capacity.
Apparently a full "tray" could only serve 2 people. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • How long does it take to cook a tray full of chips?

  • +3

Better off oven frying folks. Less oil, just as crispy. Oven tray costs $5. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than crappy fake frying! Still not as good as deep frying though.

    See: http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/household/kitchen…

    • "good" is subjective, whether its healthier or not isnt

      • -4

Choice is not very reliable and have their own brand sponsors which they preference.

Hey Anon, I added the choice review because it was consistent with my own opinion but I agree you have to be cautious with reviews.

IMHO these taste like slightly greasier versions of oven fried chips… Only they also require a $200 machine and all that extra cupboard space.

I was also under the impression that for the many faults that choice reviews have that they were independent? Is that not the case?

EDIT - I should add to the OP that if someone were in the market for this fryer regardless, this appears to be a great price. So I'm ragging on the product, not the bargain. Lol.

Prey tell sk3iron, what aspects of chip cooking does an actifry do better than the deep fry method?

Keeping in mind that its whole reason for being is to emulate a fried chip only with less oil. Every aspect of that "fried-ness" is better with a deep fryer in measurable ways (cooking time, crispiness, etc).

And my real point was that it gives about the same result as oven fry only with MORE oil. Which is measurable. Apparently.

So I repeat (and add) not as good as deep fry (in terms of friedness), but uses less oil (which may or may not have health implications based on type of oil used, broader consumption habits and physical activity).

    • As someone with an oven only big enough for one shelf, and who only generally cooks for 2… This review actually makes it sound perfect for me.

Only shameful thing is it doesn't appear to stir like the Tefal airfryer does.

  • How does this match up to a conventional oven? Been using my oven for over 2 years which cost $40 down from $169 for over a year.

    • Honestly aerona, in my subjective opinion, a hot oven does just as good a job.

      • +1

I have been using it for few months now, although i was skeptical at first but i can say for frying, this thing does the job a lot better than conventional oven. It is a lot crispier and definitely have a lower power consumption than an oven, even the portable one (i also use a portable oven)

Bought one of this a few months ago, not really happy with it. My personally opinion:

    Cons:

    1. Too small, 2 person meals if you are lucky.
    2. Hard to clean, both the mesh and bottom bit. Your cleaning material may stick on the mesh.
    3. It is a slightly healthier option BUT not a great deal.

    Pros:

    1. Faster cooking time
    2. Has temp+timer control.
    3. Does taste better than frying alone.

Same concept as those halogen light with fan, which u can get for $30-$50 with a hell lot more space IMHO. If I could score the machine, I would score 2/5.

      1. Hard to clean, both the mesh and bottom bit. Your cleaning material may stick on the mesh

This is the most aggravating part for me, cleaning the mesh insert thing is horrible. If I had a better oven I'd stick to that, but for Pork Belly with crackling this thing is awesome. Just cleaning it afterwards is a horrible nightmare.

      • Agreed, hard to clean manually. Stick it in the dishwasher if you have one, works brilliant on the mesh.

    • I'm pretty much looking at this thing for the sole purpose of cooking chips and/or potato gems… I only usually cook for 2 people anyway.

Is it very easy to stir the contents? This airfryer appears to lack the automated stirring mechanism of the Tefal actifry… meaning only the chips/gems on the outside would be cooked well.

  • I agree with Junk3569. We were given one as present.
It's too small, only for two person max. Cleaning the mesh is not easy. I usually soaked it with the holder overnight.
i am a bit skeptical about the power consumption too…

I think its a good price, especially for black version. last time target had sale, they only come in white.as comparison, the black version in TGG at that time was expensive.
    Review
I own the white version. The difference Black version come with tray for baking cake.

To give you perspective, air fryer is a small oven. So target than you spend so much power to eat 60cm or more oven. You basically work in smaller space, so It heats up quicker and good for smaller batch foods.
For big batch, I use oven
For small batch, I use air fryer
If I want very crispy food that comes with batter,ie battered fish,I go deep fry in pan.

    Positive
Healthier than deep fry. I use less oil to fry compared in the past.
It can work with batter but Dont expext good quality
It can work with frying food coated with flour, however you need to layer it with oil.
Cleaning. Can go into dish washer!
It is simple and it does have automatic turn off when timer stops

    Negative
It is small. For chips i have to do 2 batch, it takes 12-16 mins per batch.
However I don't find it is problem for me (we are 4-5 people) and usually I only need 2 batches.(note: It may varies people to people.)
Sponge cleaner may stuck in the fryer mesh.

I hope the my review can help people to make decision

  • For everyone's information, I saw this at Costco Auburn yesterday for about the same price.

Absolutely useless it's not strong enough to cook anything, stick to the basic utility that has been done for years to achieve what you want.

  • Mmmmm, fried air.. The ultimate weight losss solution!

  • Can't pay enough for less cholesterol clogging your arteries and heart arterial wall. I would say this is a good investment.

    • +5

The health benefits of this product are bogus folks. That's not to say that there aren't health consequences for eating high energy, high fat foods, just that this $200 machine is not the answer to "clogged arteries".

If you have clogged arteries, switching from deep fried to actifried is not going to make any difference.

It amazes me the $hit advertisers and manufacturers can sell by claiming its healthier or more environmentally friendly or more natural or more some such crap. Healthier does not mean healthy. It's always relative; and the comparison is to something that is a relatively low standard. (Eating spoonfuls of lard are a healthier alternative to eating spoonfuls of arsenic: lard, the healthy alternative). They should be sold as slightly less unhealthy.

Maybe people think this is a effective compromise between the lower oil content of oven frying and the crispiness of deep frying: a meeting in the middle. I just think those benefits in this case are expensive and illusory. Which is to say, you aren't paying for unclogged arteries… you are paying for marginly less clogged arteries. $200 worth of marginally less clogged arteries. When a $5 oven tray would even more marginally less clog your arteries. My 2c.

  • So they are clearing out old stock. New models have been launched already:
    http://www.billyguyatts.com.au/philips-avance-collection-air…
    http://www.billyguyatts.com.au/philips-viva-collection-air-f…

First one has a large 1.2-kg cooking capacity so better for larger families.

  • Who knows where to get a reasonably priced baking tray for this, not the mesh tray. Saw a small baking tray for airfryer on TV as a bonus item for sale.
