I've noticed more and more Asian people wearing these in town lately, are they all tradies ??? They don't look like they are…

    • nah, they're just for stopping the spread of germs through sneezing etc.

    • They're probably accustomed to wearing them as in many Asiatic countries, they wear these kind of masks to protect others from their germs (mostly if they are feeling ill, however, there are some people who feel the need to wear them at all times because they are scared of OTHER people's germs).

    • One of the reasons that you saw more and more asian people wearing this is as davo1111 said for hygienic purpose - stop spreading gems. The other is, due to outbreak of SARS in 2003 in the asian countries, people used to wearing them now as yanoflies said, to avoid getting germs from others.

That, and also because air quality in the big cities is very poor, and the masks are so that they don't breathe in the pollution.

        • These all sound like sensible reasons. Nothing to be made fun of.

Actually for people wearing these to protect themselves from germs: The warm moist zone between the mask and the face is the perfect spot to incubate nasties which get around the seal of the mask. Making you more likely to catch something. There are masks which will protect you from air borne diseases but these have to be fitted correctly around the face and it must make a proper seal.

Worth asking yourself. When you visit your GP. Do they wear masks? If they were worth wearing. Your doctor will be donning them.

Dentists wear masks as they have to protect themselves against particulates and spray.

Having said all that. I might get a couple as I have some sanding I need to do around the house…

      They're doctors jv, surgeons mostly… ;)

I doubt they are anything like these, they would generally be using 10c medical type masks, these are more than just a simple cloth filter they are P2 class designed to capture potentially dangerous particulates in the workplace and are normally a few bucks each+.
Also - if you wanted protection from pollution and fumes in the city you would want P2V class filters that capture volatiles as well as particulates

      • n95 mask to protect yourself against pollution

  • That is a freaking amazing price for P2 standard masks - grabbed 2 packs.

  • I find that if they don't have a valve they aren't worth using for more than a few minutes. The build up of heat & moisture from breathing out without a value means you sweat around the mask & it becomes pretty useless.
