With over 400 votes, this is peer pressure to get one!

    • +1

You're not wrong there, I don't need one and certainly don't have the money for one but feel like I must have one.

      • finally i bought one

    • +3

Even Scotty bought one! That adds to the pressure :)

      • Yes, sure does! Hmm…thinking…

  • Had one since December last year and since the updates earlier this year absolutely everything works great with it. It's very fast, battery life is good, updates are quick and it's relatively inexpensive. My wife has an s3 4g which aside from the camera, I dislike- much prefer the N4.

  • Get one at this price!

  • +1

bought one! what case is recommended?

    • I ended up going for the Rearth Ringke Slim.

  • Oh no! I just ordered a Galaxy Express lte from Kogan last night.

  • +1

Having an internal battle about whether I should buy this just for the sake of it being such a good deal :(

  • +1

    Good deal.

Thought it would be worth mentioning that the phone generates a lot of heat when running intensive apps/games (e.g ingress). Good for winter though.

  • -3

In USA just $199 for 8GB and $249 for 16GB. So maybe the nexus5 coming soon, so they are reduced price.

  • Great phone, and very flexable in terms of flashing ROMs and stuff if you want to go down that route. But this is pure stock Android which is pretty good in itself.

And as most others has said, there is no competition for a phone at this price.

The one thing I don't like about this phone is the back cracks very easily as it is made of glass. Found this out the hard way.

  • I've had one since February. The battery life wasn't great at first but it got better. Great phone overall, but the vibration is rather weak. You can barely hear and feel it if it's sitting on a table. But seriously, at this price it's hard to complain!

  • Just in time for Father's Day

  • How does it compare to Samsung Galaxy 3 or 4?

Also, if there is no USB port, how can you charge the phone and use it as a modem?

    • it's on par with the s3 and slower than the s4

why do u think there is no usb port? it has a micro usb port

  • Great price feels like only yesterday I was clicking refresh every few seconds to get one on release day !

  • Not the phone for me but really good price.

  • +6

A friend pointed me to this deal.
Bought the 16GB Nexus 4 on the 20/8.
A call at 11:50pm to their support was made.
Device had been shipped and I will be refunded the difference when it arrives!
    Total time, 10 minutes.

    <3 Google.

  • I've seen that Woolworths now sell 'Google Play' cards. Can these be used to purchase the phone, or is it just for app purchases?

  • +3

    here is an OZB toptip,

with a google phone go on telstra prepaid, then with the real credit buy google apps, games, music and movies

eg, on encore do a $50 recharge, you get $950 for talk, text ect but you can still 'spend' the $50 and buy telstra bonus packs for talk, text and data OR LIKE I DO, USE IT TO BUY GOOGLE APPS.

I spend my $50 every month… on the $50 i buy a 700mb bonus data pack (when the 800mb inc is getting low, near end of the month) and the rest, some $30 on google apps from my single $50 recharge, well $30 after bonus pack purchase… awsome 4G goodness too if your mobile support its too…

can you explain in a less haphazard manner?

      • Telstra prepaid credit can be used to buy apps/media in the Play Store. Simple.

can you explain in a less haphazard manner?

can you remove yourself from the gene pool?

  • Hey Guys,
Can someone clarify about the USB on the Go with the nexus 4.

Can I just plug the cable to the phone and the USB port and use it directly like a memory stick?

Or to add / remove media is it just plug and play or do I need to do something else.

Trying hard to resist for the lack of Micro Sd card….

    • Courtesy of Scubacoles who replied to my query earlier on this:

      Not really.
You need a special USBOTG adapter that allows for an external power adapter as the usb connector on the phone doesn't supply 5v.
AND you need a hacked kernel to activate USBOTG. The stock kernel doesn't support it even if you do have the appropriate adapter.

      • There is a "Nexus …" app on the Play store that does it. no need of custom rom nor kernel. USB OTG cable is needed.

        • nexus media importer? its working on my nexus 7, not sure about nexus 4 tho :)

    • You can buy a "slimport" adapter for $20 and it will enable you to view ,play movies , surf the net ..etc on your TV by plugging in the phone to TV. It also lets you charge the phone at the same time. you can then control the tv from your lounge chair using a bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse……. do anything you normally do on the nexus but with a larger screen (tv)

Ignore these other clowns who have misinterpreted your question.

All Android devices can be used as USB mass storage devices (just like a flash drive) simply by plugging them in with a regular micro-USB cable and enabling the option in the settings. You do not need a special cable or software.

USB OTG is for using external USB devices, such as a keyboard, with your phone.

What d3ft said is correct. But tbh, I have no idea what dealman is asking. ozhunter's link confirms what d3ft said in regards to OTG, and more specifically in regards to the Nexus 4's support for USB OTG.

          1. Android devices can be used as a USB storage device when connected to a PC or similar device.

          2. OTG allows a device to directly connect to a USB peripheral. ie Connecting a phone (the device ) to a keyboard (the peripheral).

The Nexus 4 supports #1 but does not support #2 out of the box.

        • +2

You seem to be the ignorant one

i am the ignorant one :-) apologies.
        • You're an ignorant mutt!

      • +4

d3ft, you're the one who has misinterpreted the specific question.
USB OTG means that you can plug a USB drive into the phone/tablet and access the files on the USB Drive from the Phone/Tablet (therefore effectively expanding its storage capacity).

And you're doubly wrong, because the Nexus 4 cannot be used as a Mass Storage Device!
Nexus is MTP only, which while similar to Mass Storage, means you can only plug it into devices that support MTP (ie computers..)

        • +1

His questions was "Can I just plug the cable to the phone and the USB port and use it directly like a memory stick?"

This has nothing to do with OTG.

EDIT: Although in hindsight, you were probably right, since he's concerned about internal memory. Either way he got his answer.

        • +1

this was funny, when all dealman had to do was: Click

    • Hey Everybody, I think I was talking from my A$$ and sent everyone down the wrong road, here's my question laid out again, Thanks for your replies.

All I want the phone to be able to do is this

      1) Connect a standard Micro USB Cable to the Phone charging port
      2) Connect the other end of the cable into a computer / Laptop
      3) Transfer pictures, videos / take a backup etc.

Can someone please tell me if the Nexus 4 can do this without additional special hardware or some magic adaptors.

This has been answered, The Nexus 4 can be used as a Memory device with a standard cable. I Should not have written USB on the Go in my initial comment. Sorry for all the angst guys.

      • Yes it can, but you will probably have to install an MTP driver to your machine.

        • +1

          Not if he's using Windows.

          On Mac he will.

        • +1

On Microsoft Windows, MTP is supported in Windows XP if Windows Media Player 10 or later versions are installed. Windows Vista and later have MTP support built in.

Recent Linux builds also support it, so unless the laptop is running OSX, it is a pretty safe bet it will 'just work'.

        • I'm on windows all the way, so thanks for this info guys.
          very Helpful.

        • I had to install a driver on my Windows 7 machine…

        • VERY recent builds.. I'm running 12.04LTS and had to install a "hack".

  • How about the local warranty? Can be fixed in Australia?

      • +6

LOL at least you get something for your $900.

    • I had an issue with my Nexus 4 when I first got it in March. Audio on calls was all jumbled. Google gave me an RA number, and dispatched a replacement. I was without a phone for about 2 days while the replacement was shipped, however if I had organised a later pick-up date (an option within their system) I probably could have had a phone throughout.

      • Whirlpool users state that they send you out a new one before you you have to RMA your current one. Though they do put a hold of the cost of a new phone on your credit card(to insure you send back you faulty handset)

        • Ozhunter is right. I have done it and you can wait for the new phone before send the old one. I think you have up to 30 days to send the old one.

  • +2

I've had this phone for a few months now (the 8GB version) and I can't speak highly enough of it. It's super fast, looks good, screen is fantastic and was a bargain at $349, so at $249 it's an absolute no brainer; nothing else even comes close.

    • How are you going for free space? Everyone seems to think 16GB is barely enough let alone 8. Aslong as I can have a dozen or so apps, a few hours of high bitrate music, and enough room to take photo's and video and only need to clean them off once every few months then it would be enough for me..

      • As I mentioned above this is my usage and I have no problems. If you want to store all of your music and/or HD movies then 16G isn't enough anyway, so get an S3 instead.

      • So vague lol.

Apps vary greatly, depends what apps you're installing.

enough room to take photo's and video and only need to clean them off once every few months then it would be enough for me

No one knows how many videos or photos you take, best to check your current phone and how much space you've used.

      • +1

8Gb only has ~4.5Gb of free space
Pretty much take off 4Gb from the advertised size and you get the free space (doesn't matter what Manufacturer you talk about)
It's advised that you leave about 1Gb free at all times otherwise you'll experience performance problems.
If that's enough for you then great!

  • Any one tried to paid via Amex? Its says its not supported even though there is icon for Amex.

    • Just found out that Amex issued in US Only are accepted.

I put an oder in the bathroom.

        • How did you fit a river in your bathroom if you don't mind me asking? :)

    • Note:- It usually takes them 1-3 days to ship, then provide tracking info…, but due to this offer who knows how much longer…, can't wait to taste 4.3… :P

      • +2

4.7* inches (cough cough below average)

        • -1

Android 4.3, not inches and average screen size is 4.5" not 4.7"… XD

        • Common guys, stop fighting over 0.2 inches. Plenty of 7 and 10 inches around. They might satisfy your fantasies :p

    • Received this morning .

  • there is a chance that the price would be reduce further when the Nexus 5 introduced or they just get rid of the 8gb one.

    Should we wait?

btw, trying to sell my Iphone 4 to get this phone lol

    • how much do u want for your iphone

      • @easternculture: I just sent a message to your inbox.

    • +1

That's what I'm wondering too, is it better just to wait and get the nexus 5 for an extra $100 or 25% more.

      • Question is, how do you think the 5 will be any better? Personally I don't think I can justify $100 for any likely improvements it might have.

        • I've heard they are going to improve the camera which everyone appears to be complaining about.

  • No White?

    • They only had white ones for a few weeks in the play store.

  • Is the shutter speed of the camera fast like an iphone?

  • Just ordered a 8gb and 16gb, for the Wife and I. Still using old Nokias, so time to catch up with the world. Looks like $20 shipping ea. Time to find a new plan. Love the idea of owning a phone outright, no lock ins, and some plans are even cheaper when byo, win!

    • Why go on a plan? Get al Aldi prepaid sim. Simple, cheap and Telstra reception.

      • So you're on that? I'll look them up, cheers.

        • i've been using woolworths, and i've got over 8gb +because data rolls over with 45day expiry
