    This is slightly misleading, in theory you can add any program (game, application whatever) to your Steam library, but it is merely a shortcut and is not really part of you Steam library.

    Neverwinter Nights and its expansions/sequels was the best outside of the old Gold Box sets for DOS.. Baldurs gate series tried too hard to keep it faithful but failed bad with execution.

      Really? The expansions were good but base NWN was a great engine looking for a game that just wasn't there.

      Also the Gold Box sets were really hack and slash (as I recall) and almost no roleplaying. More like Ice Wind Dale.

        Seriously? The Gold Box games had zero hack and slash and were straight up old-skool ad&d strategy and roleplaying. I would still count them as the best games I've ever played.

          All of the Gold Box games look and play in essentially the same fashion. You roll a party of six characters. Most of the games have overland maps, on which the party is merely a square traveling between cities and dungeons, but the bulk of the game's exploration takes place in dungeons in a first-person perspective. The bulk of a Gold Box game takes place in combat, on a tactical grid. More than most other RPGs of the era, the Gold Box games focus on the details of their tactical combat. A single battle can be quick, or larger battles can take up to an hour.

          Narrative and character, on the other hand, are quite unimportant in a Gold Box game. You virtually never have any choice in the game that means anything beyond where to explore next. The plot is conveyed partially within the game, and partially via a journal which comes included with the game box. The journal is divided into roughly a hundred entries, and every so often the game says "Read Journal Entry 23." (Many of the journal entries were fakes, to prevent players from reading the entire thing and knowing the plot entirely). Likewise, there's virtually no character interaction, either within the party or with other characters. While the game doesn't necessarily give you any reason to become attached to any characters, it's hard not to build that some form of attachment since you roll them yourself, edit their looks, and can transfer them from one game to the next.

          Perhaps you are confused by the concepts of 'having a story' and actually… playing a role? We also seem to have differing ideas on 'hack and slash'.

          There is a limited amount of role playing in the Gold Box games, but nothing too meaningful. Your characters don't even have dialog.

          Hack and slash has a different meaning in the contexts of table-top role-playing and videogames. I guess that makes it ambiguous in the context of a videogame adaptation of a table-top RPG, but I'm with calscott in that I interpreted it as the videogame definition.

          It's true that these games were constrained in terms of the decisions that you could make and how much you could the influence the story (like most videogame RPGs), but I felt that I had enough influence on the character development and how the party could complement each other that it felt like role-playing to me. Best of all, they were great fun.

      NWN and BG games can not be compared - two very different games.

      That said the Baldur's Gate Series is a magnum opus of D&D gaming and anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

    Good deal, Baldurs Gate 2 is the greatest game of all time in my opinion. I've held that opinion for over 10 years. Baldurs Gate 1 is not on an equal footing, never even finished it.

      always considered the series one very long game myself ;) - I play BG 1 every now and then with the BG2 engine imported into it.

      BG1 is pretty good, but leveling up is slow and you don't get all the cool and fun spells that you get as a higher level character in BG2.

        This is actually why I like it more, it doesn't have the sequel scale problem that BG2 has.

        Not that BG2 is bad, but even at the start of the game you are a power house. Sometimes the things thrown at you are a bit contrived to make them challenging.
