    12.5" at FHD - that's pretty sweet!

    • +3

$1600 is pretty sweet too !!

  • +1

to wait for Samsung activ q is the question

  • +1

If only this had a wacom digitizer I'd pounce. Any one played around with it? Look rather gimmicky.

    • Ive heard very good things about it. The whole convertible laptop idea is gimmicky but aparently this pulls it off nicely and the flip mechanism is strong and sturdy, or so I've heard.

      • +2

My friend bought one. It really is strong and sturdy. The flip mechanism is solid too. Quite a nice laptop with a great screen. They really should have added in an sd card slot though, and maybe a better trackpad.

        • I have one. Agree in general, trackpad is acceptable to me

  • Should I get this or the MBA, apple/windows argument aside.
Could someone help break it down for me?
I'm thinking no FHD on the MBA is the big one, anything else?

    • +7

If you haven't used a touchscreen laptop, it's more useful than you think. I use it all the time, even in Windows 7. Scrolling web pages and PDFs feels more intuitive with a touchscreen than two fingers on a trackpad. Tapping onscreen buttons as well - it's quicker to tap the screen than move the mouse cursor to the right spot and clicking.

Also, carbon fibre hides scratches better than aluminium.

        • +10

Yes, two fingers. That is how you scroll a webpage with an Apple trackpad. Surely you've tried it?

          Who is Mac?

    • +12

The MBA is very well designed, physically. Build quality second to none and extremely light and portable (slimness makes a big difference if you carry your laptop in a bag with other stuff).
MBA real life battery endurance is very good, can't comment on the Dell.
MBA silent 90% of usage, except for full HD streaming or playing games, when the fan is still quite quiet. It's eerie almost, the first time I used it. (Again, can't comment on the Dell, might be just as silent?)
      MBA cheaper (256GB 11"/13" - $1349/$1449)
The Dell is more powerful - better CPU and more RAM (although MBA is no slug, very responsive).
13" MBA has an SD slot, 11" and this Dell don't.
Forget windows vs osx, you can always bootcamp windows on the MBA if you don't like OSX.
Probably better resale value on Apple products.
FHD and touch screen on Dell, convertible form factor if it floats your boat.

Just looked at the apple website, you can configure a 256GB 13"MBA with a 4650U i7 for $1630

      TL;DR
MBA well designed, slim and light, responsive, resale value
Dell bang for buck, raw power, convertible and touchscreen, FHD

      • Thank you both, that helps a lot :)

      • In terms of build quality, the XPS12/13 feel the same as the MBAs to me. They're both solid.

        • -1

Good to know they've improved, the last time I experienced a Dell was in 2009 and I remember the finish quality was just downright shoddy.

        • +1

I was surprised too. The XPS13 was the first Dell laptop I saw that made me go "wow, that's built really well!" It was quite a departure from all the Dells I've known from the past. The XPS12 feels just as solid.

Other surprising ones are the Asus Zenbook and Samsung Series 9 - they both have excellent build quality too. Before the Zenbook, all Asus laptops were very uninspiring to me.

The Series 9 is amazing - 13.3", solid build, fantastic matte screen with excellent viewing angles, and only 1.16kg.

      • +1

        You're forgetting about the RAM,

Dell has 8gb while MBA has only 4.

To upgrade the MBA to match the specs on the dell would make it $1750

    • mba have a lower screen res but people who have mbas swear by them. With macs you can run windows no problem in vmware if you had to use both operating systems for software. Mbas will of course have the better battery life. I'd honestly go with the lighter of the two form factors. Touchscreens can have their uses but the apple trackpad hasn't been bettered.

That said I prefer Windows over Mac but find Applecare second to none.

      • +6

mba have a lower screen res but people who have mbas swear by them.

The hard part is separating those who swear by them because they're happy with it, with those who swear by them because it's an apple product.

That said I prefer Windows over Mac but find Applecare second to none.

Dell's warranty service seems pretty good. They come to you to fix stuff - very handy if you work a regular job and don't have time to go to an apple store - they'll just go to your office.

My friend says he can get support via Whatsapp too. Interesting.

(you pay extra for AppleCare too)

        • +1

Well, I meant swear by them for travel and not the screen. I know everything seems geared to hd but I'm old school and remember my first computer was a Amstrad 464 with a green screen. So the mba screen res is serviceable. It just chews up battery having full hd.

Yeh, had Lenovo onsite warranty which is like Dell. But I have to say I prefer dropping an Apple device to a genius bar because I've had them replace full a graphic card, bottom cases and retina displays with no issues with a quick turn around.

I think bypassing the telephone troubleshooting and waiting for replacement parts and a technician to get out to you is a bit tiresome. Sorry, crap experiences in general whereas Apple have always seemed to find the right solution to my problems.

        • I have had SHOCKING dell support on my XPS12.

Basically it's from dell factory outlet and when they formatted and reinstalled, they didnt put any of the recovery partitions on it. They told me that when I run out of warranty in 6 months, I wont be able to re-install my OS because they haven't and won't be giving me a method to do so. Essentially I will have to torrent an uncracked win 8 disc.

        • +1

Why don't you just press Start, type "recovery", click on Settings, and click "Create a recovery drive"?

Stick in a 16GB USB stick and it'll create a recovery stick for you.

      • I have enjoyed dell's next business day onsite warranty (even rocking up to Perth when I was holidaying there).

It is encouraging that Apple does the same thing

        • +1

Holidaying in Perth?! that's crazy! :-p

  • -2

    not bad

    ho ho ho

dell smell is good this time

  • -1

So it has an integrated hd5000 in the haswell cpu but has a hd4400 dedicated graphics? I don't know about everyone else but I'd rather get an asus lower specced for same price.

    • +7

what? There's no dedicated graphics. The hd 4400 is the intel haswell integrated. And you'd rather get something lower specced for the same price? You are making zero sense.

      • I like my asus, I always thought the haswell had a hd5000 integrated graphics.

        • +1

          I like asus too, but I wouldnt pay $1600 for a UX31A core i5 with 4gb RAM.
And the HD5000 are the Iris graphics I think, I think they are in the MBA, haven't personally seen it in anything else yet, but I'm sure its out there.

  • whats with all these dells coming up for special?
stop tempting me!!! Im certain I'll regret getting a dell not long after

    • I've had a Dell notebook (Awesome) and i'm using a Dell monitor now (Wicked awesome). I have no regrets :)

  • +28

The fact that this isn't your 1599th post and 1599th comment makes it a deal breaker..

  • If only they had a bigger size screen and at this price, I would have bought it.

  • Was interested in this but Amazon reviews are mixed at best. Might just wait and see

    http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Convertible-Ultrabook-10-finger-m…

    • +1

Most of the reviews are 4 and 5 stars. The few low reviews obviously had faulty units - mainly probelsm with the touchscreen, which definitely works properly in a non-faulty unit.

      (10 4-5 star reviews vs 5 1-3 star reviews)

      • All items have faulty units, shouldn't the fact that there are enough of them to drag the score down to 3 and a half suggest something? Perhaps it's just me, but I've only ever heard bad things about Dell reliability in the past so i'm naturally cautious.

        • +2

For something common like a laptop, people are more inclined to take the trouble to post something only if they're unhappy. If the device works fine, they're happy and are less likely to take the time and effort to write a review.

It's just human nature … people like complaining more than praising.

And oh, Dell's reputation is marred by their cheapo consumer range. I wouldn't bother getting any of those.

    • Deleted (Mistake)

    • Do note that your Amazon link is to the older model, not the new Haswell version.

  • Decent price for a very good ultra portable.

For people sitting on the fence because it's a Dell - as long as you are aware of the shortcomings you'll be fine! I have the xps13, and besides the trackpad and missing sd card slot it's a fantastic machine in every conceivable way.

    • +1

As I mentioned before, for things like a Dell laptop, people only take the effort to post when they have a problem.

I've never had any of those problems in the negative reviews with all my Dell orders, and I've never bothered writing a review on that site to tell everyone that everything was perfectly fine with all my orders over the years.

I bet there are plenty of other people out there who haven't had a problem so don't bother looking for a site to vent on.

      • Yeah every positive review is worth 5-10 negative reviews

  • I know someone with one of these.
WARNING: Glossy screen may be attached to the thing.

    • Do matte touchscreens even exist?

You could always apply a matte screen protector to it. Although, this would make the screen harder to swipe on due to the increased friction.

      • The Thinkpad X Series tablets have matte touchscreens (as well as Wacom digitizers).

People are happy touching their glossy-screened phones, ipads, and tablets though, so it's something you get used to unless you're particularly bothered by it.

      • I missed that it was a touch, the person I know with one has last years model without touch. I'd suspect a matt touch screen would soon be worn smooth in points :/

        • The XPS 12 convertible was never shipped without touch… (happy to be proven wrong)

        • Maybe he's thinking of the XPS 13.

      • Should be ok ild think. Won't be much different than putting a screen protector on a phone.

  • +1

I ordered this a couple days ago. I thought about posting it as a deal here but didnt get to it. I did a lot of research. One tip I can give to anyone researching is remember there is a 2012 version and 2013 (Haswell). A lot of the online reviews are for the 2012 version. The 2013 version has bigger battery (50 vs 47 I think) and new gen 4 Haswell processor.

  • But I just brought a laptop last year I don't really use … but this would be a great unit for the car, a lot more portable.

  • I picked up one of these from JB HiFi. I was looking for something to bridge the laptop/tablet gap and this was a pretty great fit.

The keyboard is small, so if you plan on doing a lot of typing, you might want something bigger, but for weight and portability it is pretty great. I used it on a flight yesterday to watch an episode of Mad Men and then played Limbo (via installed Steam).

The hinge frame is machined aluminium, so nothing flimsy about it.

  • Unfortunately no digitizer :(

  • +1

    hi guys,

be aware that there's alot posts on the web about the Dell XPS12 having screen burn issues. you can find it on the web. it's unresolved and its a manufacturer issue too.

aside from that it's a great laptop.

  • jb hifi has it for $1356 online so this is cheaper..although they do neg the listed price..

    • +3

Do note that's for the previous-generation XPS 12 with the 3rd gen proc, smaller battery, older gfx chipset, and half the HDD space.

  • +1

I'm very tempted by this laptop to upgrade my Asus U31F although I think I'll wait for the xps11 to be released.
    http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/03/dell-xps-11-hands-on/
Lighter, QuadHD (2560 x 1440) IPS screen, digitizer and SD Slot. Only problem is the keyboard is touch. (Like the Surface Touch cover).
Does anyone have any thoughts or personal experience with a touch keyboard?

    • +1

Cool. i just had a play with the new XPS12 at JBHiFi, very impressed… One Issue is that it is reasonably heavy, for a tablet, and when in tablet mode, it would become uncomfortable holding it in one hand very quickly… The XPS11 would probably address that, how well they do the keyboard will be the big thing to watch out for.

      • I guess which one is better will depend on which mode is your main mode - laptop or tablet.

    • +1

Yeh I'm looking forward to this device personally - the digitizer and screen res is sexy. I guess if you're primarily using to type (e.g. programmer, pumping out essays?) I don't think this will be ideal. I don't own a Surface Touch cover but I've tried it out and while you can get used to it - in the end if you wanna be typing a crapload I'd steer away (although XPS 11 has haptic feedback.. dunno if that'll change much, must have a try when it gets out).

Wonder if Yoga 11S will get a Haswell update… banking on something like that (although no digitizer, and not as good res) - but personally a physical keyboard would outweigh those things for me.

  • +1

Rocking my Lenovo twist. This thing is waaaay above my budget :)

    • And still there you are, with that thing in your hands…

    • haha how's the hinge on the thing? love the form factor, shame on the batt life though. lenovo pumped out a lot of convertibles (yoga, helix, lynx, etc.) but yeh good experimenting they did.

Good luck to all those who ever need service on their pc.

    http://www.productreview.com.au/p/dell-australia.html

    • As mentioned before when that same link was posted 4 days ago, people usually only post comments when they have a complaint. Everyone else who haven't had any issues don't bother posting to tell everyone it was fine.

My friend had a problem with his XPS13 a few months ago. Dell went over to his place to replace some parts. He was very satisfied with their service.

I've bought many Dell products over the years and never had any problems, including when I had to call for service. But because I was satisfied and everything just works, I don't actively seek out review websites to write a post saying everything is working fine.

  • So a couple days left on this. Lucky I read that there is no sd card slot. It's a nice build and the screen is pretty sexy.
