yep they will do everything in their power to keep you as a customer, I had every trick in the book thrown at me to keep me, they said we cant cancel your account now, wait for a manager to call you, then they never call etc etc I could go on for hours about all the little shifty things they do! Never trust the shittybank!!

        • why don't you teach a shitty bank a lesson by taking $120 from them and don't let them make a single dollar out of you?

  • Yeah, the ID verification process is too time consuming for the $50. Just going to wait for my application to expire in 60 days.

  • got a branch on my way to uni. ill pop by to show them my id. thanks for this deal!

  • not for me, can't be bothered to certify copies for opening an account that I have to close anyways….even Mebank uses post office to verify identity, these guys should also have that

  • Thx. I think they have a branch not too far away. Can I get the $50 after depositing and withdrawing the $2000 the very next day.

    • I don't see why not, from their terms and conditions. That's definitely what I plan to do.

      • Awesome!

    • +1

I agree with the above - I highly doubt there's a requirement to maintain a $2000 balance until the bonus is paid. Otherwise, many people earning their bonus by depositing $2000 worth of salary over 4 weeks aren't going to get the bonus - because they'll also be gradually withdrawing those deposits over the same 4 week period to pay bills.

I'll also be depositing then withdrawing my $2k straight away. Keeping $2k for 4 weeks in a zero interest account costs $5 in lost interest at current interest rates of around 2.5% - 3%

      • +4

Great analysis however there is no need to settle for 2.5-3%.

With rates such as you stated, you are not keeping up with inflation when accounting for tax so the real value of your money is going backwards (i.e you are losing purchasing power).

You can get 4.5% with ING Direct and another $50 bonus with this deal

        • +2

Thanks for the tip, that rate is definitely much better than the going rate for most banks.

I did my $2k deposit today. I did it by EFT but should have done it over the counter. Suncorp doesn't let you EFT money out of your account until they give you an EFT password, which they say will send to you in 4-6 business days - that's a bit of lost interest.

What I should have done was go to my bank, withdraw $2k, walk over to Suncorp (the two branches are like 50 metres away from each other for me) deposit and withdraw the $2k, then walk back over to my bank to deposit back the $2k. Would've gotten interesting looks from the tellers - but would've been worth it :)

  • Will apply tomorrow. Thanks OP..

  • +1

Some people must be incompetent or clueless if it takes them more than a few mins to open and close a bank account. Its more like earning $50 for 5 mins work (if you classify it as that) , and I am one of them slow lazy people at doing such simple task. Thanks op :)

  • Opened mine today & ID verified at bank. Thanks, OP!

  • Took me all of 2mins to get the ID verification done at Suncorp Collins St, Melb.

  • Opened mine. Thanks OP!

  • I found this at SunCorp.
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/113397
    It's quite tempting.

    • +2

Why would you wanna lock away your money for such a long time?

Interest rates will rise from the current historic lows and you'll be on a low and fixed rate and miss out.

Long term TDs make sense when interest rates are high and expected to fall. Not when they are already at all times lows.

      • I agree that it will rise for sure but when?

Current at call rate will go down to 4.5% (assuming that they eventually pass 0.25% cut earlier this month) and may fall further to 4.25% in the near future (assuming another cut this year). It take three rate rises next year to get to 5%.

You have options of 4Y or 5Y for this 5% deal.

        • +4

The maximum I am willing to lock away my money for 5% is 12 months.

For anything more than 3 years, I would demand nothing less than 6.5-7%

When interest rates rise, they rise a lot quicker than they fall (or at least that's how it has been historically).

5% for 4 years: NO DEAL

        • Well, it depends on your and market circumstance.

I believe this is a good deal because:

          1. These two TDs are much better than any of its competitors.
          2. These two TDs are yielding better than the best at call account at the time.

You will reap the benefit if the rate does not rise too quickly. The rate can rise twice or thrice at 0.25% and you still benefit from the TDs.

Any further comment on this should be on the thread
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/113397

  • Spent 2 minutes to open the account. Just need ID verification at bank. Easy money! Thanks OP!

  • +1

went into a branch and was told if you had a previous account even if it was closed many years ago you would not qualify as it was for totally new customers with no profile in their records.

    • not true…

You should open an account online. Go to post office to verify ID.

Give it a try. I bet that you get $50.

    • +1

the t&cs clearly state that you qualify as long as you don't have one of the eligible accounts at the time of the promotion

      • +1

However, going into a branch may invalidate the campaign…

If they pull out old customer profile and add your new account to it…

To be on a safe side, just use austpost.

  • Applied online last night, only got a reference number but no account info. Says wait for email but nothing happened?

    • You should check junk email. This portion is automated and should arrive to you within 2 minutes. You should receive 2 pdf's. One welcome letter with account details and another form to fill out for identification (which you can ignore if you go to a branch)

      • Been days have not received a thing!
Def nothing went to junk mail but I did hit the confirmation page at the end of the sign up process.
        Hmmm.

        • Funny enough my mother applied today and got email immediately, have to call them about this I think.

    • That's the same situation for me too and I've also checked my junk mail - nothing.

Have any of you been a Suncorp customer in the past? I wonder if I haven't got the email because of this, even though I currently don't have an account with them.

      • Nope I was a new customer. Give them a call

  • "Residential address must be a physical address."

Why can't I fix this issue?

  • Got the email today!

    • +1

Same. It includes the ID verification info (despite having already verified at AusPost) and my account details. I tried to sign up for internet banking, but they never SMSed me a temp access number, so I tried calling, and their phone number (131175) just rings out - not even a message to advise if they are closed today or something. Not a great experience so far.

Actually, I saw another number in the email and that one worked - 131155.

      • Yeah was wondering about that sms verification business - def didn't receive one yet.

  • Can someone confirm if we can verify identity for this in Australia Post ??

    • +1

      Yes

      • Thanks

  • i closed my account earlier this year (by visiting the branch). However i don't know if the internet banking has been removed or still active. will this hurt?

    • if you can still log into internet banking then you can open an account from there in only a few clicks.

  • Bugger, I just checked and still have an open Everyday basics account (from the last $50 promotion)
I remember now I tried to close it over the phone, but they insisted the only way was to visit a branch, and just didn't get round to it.
I wonder if it still worth a try for this $50, by applying as a new customer.
    Any opinions ?

    • next year :)

      • Yep, $100 from the Savings Maximiser + Goalsaver is not bad anyway.

  • Do they send any confirmation once ID is verified? I verified my ID at the Austpost but haven't received any confirmation yet..

    • +1

You should get a new card and pin by early next week. (they come separately)

  • -2

Guys, I had one of these bonus from an account in 2012, which I closed after 4 months of receiving the bonus. Tried to open another account online and verified my ID at Macarthur Square Shopping Center Branch. The consultant checked my history and found that I had an account with Suncorp in past, so I am not a Brand new customer to them, Hence I will not be receiving this bonus again. I called their call center as well and they had confirmed with their head office. I can confirm that I will not get this bonus again. Has this happened to anyone else as well? that di**head consultant Matthew at branch was a racist & he was trying to make sure that I should not get the bonus again. Any comments??

    • My recommendation is to have your identity verified at an AusPost outlet rather than at a branch.

If you are interested to make your dispute heard, read fos.org.au

    • +2

Here we go again!! People playing the racist card everytime they don't get something they think they're entitled to, thereby diluting it for everyone else in legitimate circumstances.

It's not that HARD!!! They specifically say NEW CUSTOMERS only!!! Whether you closed the account 2 years ago or whether you were standing on one foot at the time playing a banjo it DOESN'T MATTER!! You're still NOOOOOT a new customer.

Get it???? That's the whole point of the 'New customer' clause. Otherwise everyone would keep opening/closing accounts everytime there's a bonus.

PS: Verifying your identity at Auspost shouldn't make any difference. That's got nothing to do with the bonus!! They'll simply open your account (which you are entitled to) but Suncorp wouldn't pay your bonus.

      • +1

        Legal aspect:

        1. "New customer" is ambiguous. It should be clarified. Some T/Cs do this by saying ex-customers or those who held x,y and z product in the past are not eligible. Some T/Cs say you just need to be new to the product but not to the business.

        2. After you have closed your account for 7 years or so, banks are not required to maintain your records. (but they MAY keep it forever as the disk space are cheap. However, when they have a costly upgrade, they are likely to leave you behind in the old system…)

        3. If there is no record, you are considered new…

        Practical/operational aspect:

        1. Perhaps, branches are lazy or are instructed not to create unnecessary new customer profiles.
When you go into a branch, they try to match your with existing profile first.

        2. Any business don't want you to just walk away with $50 without giving them any benefits. The story could have been different if you are going to have a home loan, an insurance, TDs (see http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/113397) or other high-value products with them.

        3. Auspost outlets MAY BE used to avoid #1 and embarrassment when you go to close account one month later and see the same banker there.

*** THIS DOES NOT CONSTITUTE LEGAL/FINANCIAL ADVICES ***

      • +2

On the racist/discrimination matter, jimmy.sally has not elaborated on that. However, the discussion should be elsewhere as it is irrelevant to this thread. If he believes that his legal/human/constitutional rights have been (illegally?) deprived/compromised/breached, they are many avenues/channels to vent his concern. See http://www.humanrights.gov.au/ for example.

*** THIS DOES NOT CONSTITUTE LEGAL/FINANCIAL ADVICES ***

      • +2

No people rarely play the racist card. This guy is just a troll. There's a reason why he posted "Any Comments" after his post. He's wants attention. don't feed

  • -1

LOL are you a lawyer or consultant? Too many words to describe a simple concept. He/She already stated that this was in 2012.

Bottom Line - When you're trying to 'abuse' the system don't cry racism when they allow you to only do it once.

    • +4
      1. Does it matter if I say yes to your question?

      2. The issue of the bonus and racism should be dealt with separately. (but in this thread is only concerned with bonus) It will go to separate ombudsman/court/tribunal at the end if he/she wish to pursue the matter.

My bottom line: Business owners should be more careful with their T/Cs and this kind of campaign. Ambiguity MAY be used to their advantage in the past but not today! With the internet penetration these days, it is difficult to target your communication to only one specific group of customers. T/Cs must be clear on eligibility.

There are three good case studies of CBA on Ozbargain that is being tested in FOS.org.au

    • +1

      O day. For example,

      1. Direct credit and direct debit on the same day.

      2. Cash deposit + external transfer or BPay.

      • Thanks
Sorry neg your vote by mistake:(

  • +1

how long does the $50 usually take after depositing $2000?

    • T & C's state within 4 weeks. Someone will post when they get it and since no one has yet there is nothing to worry about yet :)

  • Has anyone, who had an account with them in past, closed the account a while ago, reopened the account and actually got the bonus again this time?

  • +1

I had bit of trouble with Suncorp. My profile was been merged with my old profile and they gave me the old customer number again with new account number. I am interested to know if anyone else had the same situation

  • +1

can you deposit 2k in branch and get $50?

    I got paid as well..

    Account opened: 20/08
    Transferred 2k: 28/08
    Withdrew 2k: 29/08
    50$ Bonus received: 10/09

  • +1

yeah me too. The good thing about it is that it's actually $50 BONUS and not treated as interest payment which presumably makes it tax free. I was thinking of closing my account but I noticed a $1000 bonus draw for singing up to estatements. Might keep it open until the competition is over. You never know.
PS: I hate their stupid portrait cards!! Not that I'm ever going to use it.

When you entered did the entry form go to a thank you page or anything? Looks like it just hangs for me

Yes, it went to acknowledgement stage.

I suggest you try again later.

It may say you are already in the competition…

      • +1

thanks. i couldn't see it anywhere. i might be adblocking it.

submission gives an error for me "You have submitted this form the maximum number of times (15).". something is stuffed up at the moment.

        • perhaps, you need to click the links from you suncorp internet banking - rather than the link for the general public…

        • +1

          Thank you
Good luck! Your entry has been received.

          appears to be working now

  • Who want to close your A/C now and do it all over again…? This one is tax-free unlike ING!

accounts opened between Monday 12 August 2013 and Friday 4 October 2013.

      • very true, but ozbargainers from the ING thread might want to test it…

I transferred over my 2k Thursday last week, got my bonus this morning.
Then I transferred out $2050 this morning. I got a phone call a few minutes ago confirming the transfer was intentional and that I knew about it (which was actually pretty nice of them)

I might even consider keeping the account, the sub accounts look handy.

  • I couldn't be bothered going to verify my ID but I received a welcome pack today in the mail. Guess they opened the account anyway!

    • YES, your account is open…

      YES, you can deposit money…

but NO, you can NOT withdraw your money until your identity is verified.

St George works in a similar manner for TDs…

      • +1

I don't think so. My application email said the account would be closed without identification. I also just applied for an ETP which will be mailed to me in a few days time which will allow external transactions.

  • got mine too. I liked the account. I ll leave it open with the money in.

    • with money in? this account earn you 0% interest. FYI:You may be interested in SUN eOption instead…

  • Received the $50, but cant take it out because I have bothered to verify my account.

    • you need a third-party internet transfer password too. you can request one but it will arrive in mail… takes time…

      • That's not necessary if you just want to use BPAY or get cash out with your card.
I used BPAY straight away (after verifying my ID), well before I received any passwords, cards etc as they do take time. BPAY can be used to payoff another Credit Card for example.

        • BPAY to UBANK is as good as a bank transfer (subject to 5d clearance time)…

Can't you visit a branch or get the money out from an ATM, maybe???

      • you can visit a branch to verify you identity and withdraw/close account.

ATM (and all debit transtiona) will not work until you verify your identity.

      lol.

open an eoptions account (online only high interest account) from internet banking and move everything there. at least you will get some interest.

  • If I opened the account greater than 4 weeks ago and haven't deposited my 2000$ yet, have I missed out according to the T&Cs?

    • yep

  • When does the 4 week period 'technically start'? Is if from the date you verify your ID and they enable your account? Or is it from the day you sign up?

  • I got my $50 but have now closed the account. They give you a bank cheque on the spot, no charge.

Didn't really like their online service, which is all I use. Nice people to deal with in the branch though.

    • I agree. Online serice is quite bad, and their password requirment isn't good (ie not safe enough).

Also, phone support has been very bad/rude.

Store themselves though have all been good.

I missed out on the $50 because they consider the 4 week period starting from when you sign up, not when your ID is verified & account opened :(

    • Did you have to physically walk into a branch to close the account?

Is it possible to close via phone/online message?

Is anyone having trouble closing their account? They refuse to close the account over the phone. I walked into a branch, they wanted ID. Then the lady at the counter wanted me to sign something that she couldn't explain what the signature was for, mumbled something about "having a copy on my record". I told her no. She gave me a "Withdrawal Record" slip for $0.00 and insisted that was proof of account closure.

    • yea, no one beats ING Direct as far as how easy it is to close an account.

I would suggest you check online banking and make sure that:

      1. Account no longer appears there or, better yet

      2. Online banking access has been removed altogether. This is a good indication that you are no longer a Suncorp customer.
