I'd rather save a heap and use a USB3 cabled external hdd. A massive difference in speed when copying files across. The transfer speeds across wireless are only acceptable for wireless streaming and puny files. Expect some pain if performing backups etc.

It's not meant for you. It would be great for those with devices that can stream content wirelessly as the only way - like iPods and iPads.

      • You will still need to plug it somewhere to spin.

        • its battery powered… (10 hours)

If you dont need battery powered, yes its cheaper to get a router that supports USB connection then you can have it transfer wirelessly that way.

        • I could get by with smaller capacity iPods/iPads for the kids while driving on long, interstate trips. It's a pretty neat idea just for that.

You have a comparison for the speeds? I'd rather buy 2 1tb with USB atm but maybe I'm just stingy like that

Bought one a month or so ago from HN, got them down to $229.
This drive is for a pretty narrow market so I wouldn't pay a premium if your simply looking for a portable hard drive replacement. I bought it for 2 purposes. So the kids would have all their movies available on their tablets when travelling (it can stream a number of HD movies at the same time). So far this has worked great and the inbuilt battery means you can stop start the car without interrupting the entertainment. The second was for a 9 day cruise we've just got back from. I bought the wifi internet package that allowed a single device connected at any one time. I connected through the Seagate wireless plus (a very nice feature)and hay presto for the trip we had up to 4 people connected at the same time surfing the net and a couple of kids watching movies (we had 3 cabins). Obviously everything was loaded on to it via USB 3.0 because the transfer over wireless is a little slow.
