In my mail late last night - 2 day special. Limit 3 per customer.
Pay $368 and claim $69 cashback within 2 weeks of purchase.
MSY has no indication of stock level, so it's probably first in gets the laptop.
Here's a link to a short review: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Aspire-V5-431P-997B4G50Mas…

Get the latest atheros wireless driver from the Acer website, fixed my wifi problems.
would this be good for CAD and modelling software?
Went to the FG officeworks on my way to buy crystal-meth in Hallam. (jk you screaming babies)
Tech guy said they would match the MSY price OK, but then the cash register girl said "no, we are not allowed to pricematch MSY anymore"
I asked to see the manager.
The manager showed me a piece of paper with some company names on it (that they are not allowed to pricematch) and MSY.com.au had been badly hand amended to this 'fax distribution sheet' of who not to match.
I told her that you can't have a price-matching policy and then pick and choose who you want to match, considering they are a brick and mortar store with stock and general retails sales.
She said it is because the Warranty is NOT handled by Acer but by MSY as they are GREY IMPORTS. When I took her to task on this, suggested the ACCC would be hearing about it, and that I know for a fact that MSY deal direct with Acer (Hi Roy) and do not sell grey imports AND further that her assertion could amount to defamation against MSY, she started DENYING the statements she had made only minutes earlier and backed down!
Needless to say I got the price-match after considerable sabre-rattling, and the manager resolved to enquire with Head Office as to why MSY is on the 'do not match' list.
The IT guy there said he had already had at least one other guy in to get the price-match earlier today, and they gave it to him without the rubbish argument I got.
MSY Rep - if you are still reading this thread BE AWARE that Officeworks are asserting (from head office) that you are a grey importer and that warranty is handled by you and not the manufacturer. Officeworks are obviously annoyed and afraid of the threat that you present to them.
Somehow I don't think MSY cares mate. In fact if I were MSY I'd be more than happy for OW to classify me as a GREY importer etc and mention it to every cheapskate Ozbargainer (not that there's anything wrong with it) trying to pricematch. It's not like they're advertising it to the masses. Think about it. The irony of your statement/action is amusing.
the irony is that you understand what the heck you just wrote. No one else does.
Are you seriously that obtuse?? You're somehow trying to protect MSY's reputation purely for self gain as you want to run off to Officeworks and get the product cheaper.
As I said, I don't have an issue with people doing that as it happens on here all the time BUT don't come across as if you're trying to help MSY in some way. You're just costing them BUSINESS.
I'm sorry that your mind doesn't grasp 2 competing principles.
Most people here are far less 'obtuse', hence you're negged and I'm not. Is that obvious enough gimpe?
You also wouldn't have known that I buy more notebooks through MSY than Officeworks by about 10 to 1, and bought 5 notebooks from MSY last month alone (all Acers), so I forgive your impudent comment
Lol good to see you measure your intelligence based on lazy internet negs from 20c ice magic chasers.
I don't care about the ratio of your purchases as it does nothing to validate your comments. Not to mention you probably only bought from MSY when a price match model wasn't available at OW.
clap
Maybe he's Broden, what else is he doing buying that many notebooks?
That was me who went in to the fountain gate OF asmorning, to grab the deal.
I had no problems what so ever getting them to price match, although the IT guy did call MSY.
Seems they may have being annoyed that's its getting ozbargained ;)
The indian IT sales guy? He is currently getting his arse kicked, poor fella. The manager told me so.
I have previously matched a lot of MSY stuff at FG Officeworks, and this is the first time ever that they have gone militant against it.
I do think that MSY would take the assertions being spread by Officeworks quite seriously (contrary to GIMME's odd notion of how the world works). Spreading rumours that someone is a grey importer when they are not, and sighting it as the reason to make an exception to your own advertised policy, is quite evil when untrue. What's more is that as far as I understand MSY do not currently grey import, so its not as though Officeworks have any facts to base that assertion on.
Why else would they refuse to match MSY now? It just hurts to bottom line so do like everyone else does and LIE.
Yeah was the indian dude, seemed a bit hesitant at first but my words got him to do it with ease.
Im sure office works have clued on to whats happening with the MSY deal and now are getting flooded with ozbargainers hahah hence them trying to get out the deal, as their losing quite a lot of $profit
The other odd thing was that they seemed 'disappointed' that I paid by cash - it's almost as though they wanted the EFT details to identify OzBargainers!
My local office works store will use every pie and excuse in the book to get out of or cematching. I decided to spend the extra 5% and get it from MSY, whose deal it really is.
Thanks for a bargain MSY
Does anyone have an Officeworks receipt? I am having a discussion with OW that they have been honouring the deal.
OW Auburn, Northmead and Castle Hill didn't have any in stock.
Castle Hill guy said they would price match except for Penta.
Ended up getting the last one at MSY Auburn. Still a bargain! We should price match and buy every last notebook they have in stock… then on sell them for the SAME price just to teach OW a lesson… haha :D
changed my mind. Sell em to Harvey Norman.
**** ATTENTION EVERYONE ****
Here is my experience of buying the Acer V5.
I went to my local Officeworks. I said wanted the V5 and asked if they price matched. The guy that worked there immediately said "To MSY??". He had obviously heard of the deal before. I said yes, and showed him the online price of $368 on my smartphone. He was very sceptical and then said I needed a "hardcopy" of the price from one of their physical stores and that they would not take online quotes.
I explained to him that that was BS, and online quote was fine, and I CALLED the closest MSY store in front of him and they confirmed over the phone it was $368. The Officeworks staffer then went over to one of the Officework's desktops and went on the MSY site to see it for himself. He then said something along the lines of "Oh wait…this doesn't say ANYTHING about a WARRANTY, so we can't match it."
This was getting ridiculous. I called MSY AGAIN and asked if they V5 came with a warranty, they said YES, and that it could be found written on their NOTEBOOK PRICE LIST which is essentially their catalogue in PDF form on their website. I brought it up for the Officeworks guy, and showed it to him. He sighed and finally gave in, accepting defeat.
He rang it up $340 total (with the 5% Officeworks Price match), and I used my ING Paywave to save an extra 5% (which AT FIRST HE TOLD ME WOULDN'T WORK IN $99 SEGMENTS, BUT ANOTHER STAFF MEMBER TOLD HIM IT WOULD).
All in all, it was a bit of hassle - but definitely worth it. The laptop is great, and the touchscreen is really cool. I will definitely use it A LOT.
TOTAL LAPTOP PRICE: $253!!!
Can I ask which store or at least region/state that was?
I am starting to think that the 'warranty' ie grey import accusation is now an official Officeworks line.
MSY would appreciate knowing this I'm sure.
What Officeworks head-office cost setting gurus really need to do is read ozbargain etc daily, and if there is an MSY/Centercom/CPL/etc deal on something that Officeworks carry, then drop the price for the same period (usually 1 to 3 days). I recon they have been less honest by making stock 'disappear' for the sale period to avoid losses, and are now attacking the reputation of another retailer by making warranty claims (and it certainly wasn't in the way of 'oh it happened a while ago').
I believe the bottom line is this - if Officeworks become a victim of their own pricematching policy then it is their own fault for simply not paying attention to the competition. Making it qualify by being a bricks and mortar store using Australian supply channels is fine, but when I told the Officeworks manager that MSY deal direct with Acer she said 'so do we'.
I guess they know who to ask then.
Anyone who can't get a price match needs to get the dudes name, get the managers name, note the time and day and create a case with fair trading or maybe the ACCC, couple of investigations and a new fax will go out saying honour the deals.
I just bought one today from MSY, $368, all sydney's officeworks sold out this model. However my brother doesn't want it so I have to sell it, if anyone interested please contact me. I can sell it for $350, still cheaper than buying from MSY. its brand new with receipt so you can claim cashback. I am in Campsie, sorry for posting ad but really no need it. My number 0451663269 thanks
Couldn't get a price match at my nearest OW store ether
You NEED to push them and show them the NOTEBOOK PRICE LIST which says it has a 1 year warranty. Do not give up!
After posting, I decided I really need one myself. Went to OW Adelaide St Brisbane CBD - who said they had the display unit and - "three which had been returned faulty".
So, the really helpful guy (who said they could price match) called another store and had them call me back at work.. And another helpful guy at the other store has verified the pricematch with MSY and allocated a unit to me.
I'm going to pick it up tomorrow morning…Thanks picked one up from the Auburn store.
These are a really crap machine, I am having a super bad time with Acer products lately, and trying to return the stock as become impossible. Also you will never ever get the cashback.
Buyer Beware!,
if it is Acer, Centrecom and MSY and a combination of the two, you will get ripped, by something cheap and nasty and not be able to return it, save up another $50 and buy something else.
Bought a tablet it was crap, bought this, and it was even worse.
Not having luck at all :(I just saw on a forum, maybe it has to do with this.
bad things are happening at Acer, that is why they are selling everything so cheap.http://channelnews.com.au/hardware/HCKLEHKR.aspx#EXCLUSIVE-M…
I've had one for a month or so as my primary machine. I added 4Gb of RAM and an SSD for the primary drive and find it very good for my office/web needs.
Since you didn't say what the problem is with this machine, and you seem to be having a lot of them, have you considered it might be something wrong with what you are doing?
My non-IT literate friends are always blaming the hardware or a 'virus' for their IT problems when it is usually because they are doing it wrong.
Picked up one this morning from the local OW - the slowest bit was first finding it, then the manager showing the cashier how to process it.
I had forgotten how painful it is to start up a new install of windows. Win8 is a backward step from Win7.
BTW, my past 3 experiences with Acer's cashback scheme have been okay. When the card(s) finally turns up, that is.I bought this tablet with the price match at office works with no problem at all. I also did a salary sacrifice through my job since my laptop just gave out and needed to replace it anyway.
damn. 2 of the keys dont work. the S and the D. Acer fail -.-
anyone had any cash back success yet?
Not yet. Why so long…
I've got the confirmation email from ACER that they received the cash back documents successfully.
Nothing back yet though. Anyone else?Got the email too but nothing else yet..
