HTC One 64GB Silver $786 - AUS Stock - Harvey Norman

270

Picked up one of these myself the other day. From $949 down to $786 - that's a pretty good deal. The Good Guys have the 32GB HTC One for about the same price (website is currently down for maintenance).

I know online you can get similar prices (or in one case, slightly better) but the convenience of a brick and mortar store is still worth consideration. If you want to give your money to Harvey Norman, that is. ;)

Also a brick & mortar for $779. They have also built a decent reputation on OzB.
However this price should be its normal price. A price drop @ HN doesn't represent a good deal because it was sold with a high profit margin in the beginning.

    • +1

Mentioned this in my post, knew they were a tad cheaper. Fair enough point.

    • +4

It's only $779 for people living near Paramatta.

Way more people would benefit from it being $786 at Harvey than it being $779 at Mobileciti.

If something goes wrong during the ELF period (like gaps…) they can also swap it on the spot at Harvey.

      • +3

Early life failures replacements applies to Mobileciti too. So if you can pick it up for $8 cheaper, why not?! I've seen deals on OzB getting 70+ vote for a SGSIII price drop of a measly $2.

        • +7

Did you miss my first sentence? That only applies to people living near Paramatta. Everyone else will have to get the phone shipped (plus extra shipping for an ELF), which makes it more expensive than Harvey. I guarantee you more people live near a Harvey Norman than a Mobileciti.

        • +1

I know… But if you can pick it up and is in the area is what I meant. Did you miss my point?
          And is technically still cheaper.

        • Having this point still can't justify the neg.

        • bob - so what makes this a bad deal that deserves a neg? Because a small number of people can get it for $8 less? What about the rest of the country?

        • -5

It highlights a valid point for people who do live around that area and who can pick it up.

        • +2

If it's that good, why don't you post it as a new deal? After all you did say an SGS3 price drop of $2 got 70+ votes.

          p.s. - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

if it's cheaper elsewhere but won't reach everyone the original deal covered, please mention this but do not vote negative for this reason.

  • Expensive! Suggestion: wait 6 months, Confidence: 80%.

    • +21

Suggestion : wait 10 years and this will be $10

    • +4

the price is not gonna drop as fast as the Xperia Z, Confidence: 100%

    • +1

No need to wait for 6 months, next month there're some new phones come out and this will drop by $100+. As I said many times, I won't pay more than $500 for this phone.

      • +1

but you will for a samsung phone that made of plastic…interesting

        • +1

What's wrong with plastic? It's more durable than aluminium for a phone. If you drop it, aluminium will dent and look really ugly while plastic will flex and bounce back, unless it's a particularly hard bump.

Scratching a black aluminium phone is even worse. Silver lines!

        • Plastic is supposed to be cheaper?

        • Well… super AMOLED, a 13MP sensor, a high-sensitivity touch sensor (for glove mode), and bigger battery do cost more.

        • sure the high-sensitivity touch sensor and the slightly bigger battery cost more, but not sure about the 13MP sensor and the screen… personally I think the screen on the S4 is pretty dull, if you put them side by side.

        • Hmm, I thought the S4 screen was amazingly vibrant. Maybe the brightness was turned down when you saw it.

I went to a store with my friend; I bought the One and he bought the S4. Compared to my screen, I thought the S4 was amazingly vibrant. Those who don't like oversaturated screens can change the screen mode to be more natural.

I'm really loving the One's camera though. Ultrapixels really do make a difference in low light.

        • Yeah I suppose it comes down to your personal taste, I like the screen on the One being brighter and slightly warmer and sharper (S4 uses pentile) compared to the S4 (same when comparing last year's One X and S3). But the camera on the One disappoints me a bit due to the low pixel count, it'd be great if they can make it 8 or 10 Ultrapixels next year.

        • Pentile definitely isn't an issue at that res… unless you hold your phone three inches from your face maybe. :)

I certainly wouldn't mind more pixels for digital zoom, but given a choice between low MP+good low-light and high MP+poor low-light, I'd take the former anytime as it suits the photos I take most often. The nice wide field of view is fantastic too.

With all the fuss HTC made about pixel size, I wonder how they're going to market the One's successor. If they increased the MP, the pixels would be smaller and they'd be contradicting themselves a bit. Hopefully they can squeeze in a larger sensor!

        • Probably cause I have sensitive eyes, it's actually quite obvious to see the difference of two screens, but yeah both are very good, I wonder if phone's screen res is going to get any higher.

Larger sensor probably means a thinker phone, like the lumia 1020, it'd be great if they can fit a larger sensor in and still keep the phone thin.

have you updated your One to 4.2.2 yet?

without needing to look up the definition of 'durable', I'm fairly sure aluminium > plastic. Metal dents. plastic cracks.

        • +1

Metal dents. The type of plastic that Samsung uses deforms then pops back into shape, unless it's a particularly hard drop.

          e.g. the back cover - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=cLg…

Also, metal will transmit more of the shock to your phone's internal components simply because it's stiffer. With plastic, the whole body can flex.

        • +3

I have HTC one myself, it's simply the best phone out there. The speaker sound is fantastic. My friend is begging me to swap mine with his S4 + $50 and I said no Jose…

        • @eug
i should start looking for a plastic car tmr :D

        • +1

syl - Your car now is pretty close! Imagine if your car's bumper cover was made of metal instead of plastic. The smallest car park prang would put an ugly dent in it, while a plastic one would just pop right back.

actually it was $786 from day 1 at harvey norman, I'm the one that was considering which one to buy(32 or 64), still went with 32GB though.

    • I was briefly watching it and only the other day did I see it drop to $786! But fair enough.

    • It was $786 on day 1, but the price quickly jumped to $9xx once the first batch got sold - there was a bit of chatter about it on WP. Good to see it's back down.

  • +1

damn nice phone, got my gf this and now i wish i had this instead of my s4

mind you their both pretty awesome

    • +1

Happy to hear that, just ordered one through work.

    • +3

—- mind you their both pretty awesome

I take it you are talking about the GF and the HTC :P

  • -4

I thought 32GB of internal mem was enough for even the most avid of downloaders and shutterbugs, but 64GB? That's way overkill. Couldn't one just buy a bigger 64GB SD card?

    • +4

HTC One has no expandable memory…

      • Was just about to amend, but you had to ninja my comment.

But yeah, what do people store on their phone that neccessitates a 64GB storage space?

        • +1

Dunno what people do, but I'm guessing lots of music, photos from the camera, and the big killer - using the phone to video things. Recording video sucks up storage like crazy.

        • I travel a lot, I use it to store a stack of movies.
Currently usually a Samsung G2 with 64Gb external. Kills me that that I can only get a 32GB, even the 64GB wouldn't be enough.
I hate not having external memory option, but ill have to learn to live with it now.

        • You can always use one of those wifi hdd's. Not sure of the formats supported since you have to use custom players and such

        • I torrent with my phone. Music, apps, games…pron… hehehh..

Better then leaving my computer on all night.

    • I hope you are joking. I absolutely love tthe 128gb iPad 4.

  • So there's always been the dev version or whatever it is with 64gb, yet they say this is a new model. Is this actually a seperate model, and does that mean it could come to carriers to purchase on contract?

    • No idea why they're calling it new, they definitely had it around the time the phone was first released.
The dev version is US-only and has different 4G bands - it won't work in Australia on 4G.

I think it has always been available for carriers (after the initial supply problems), dunno why they don't bother with it. I suppose they're afraid not many people would buy it, and they'd end up with slow-moving stock.

  • With the 32gb selling for $686 it's expected that the 64gb should be $100 more, just like there is a $100 difference between an iPhone 32gb and and iPhone 64gb. Any more that a $100 difference is just a blatant rip off.

    • Otherwise it's just a subtle ripoff, given the difference in price for the two flash chips is nowhere near even $100 :p

  • a good phone at a good price.

  • When HTC One MAX phablet is out, this will drop in price. Not buying until its less than $500

HTC and Samsung prices drop like flies.

  • -2

    i got it for <$500

think the Dick smith deal was better @ $700 (32gb though)

    got GST back ($60)~
    sold the free beats ($150)

    $490 for HTC One

  • Not a deal. Optus quoted me a lower price yesterday over the chat, and that is available to everyone.

    • +1

What was the price you were quoted over chat?

  • How is this a deal? mobicity has it for $775?
