  • is this the new store or old one? the last time i went there it's crap … lots of mismatched sets.

    • Not exactly sure, but when I went today, nothing was really out of place.

Think they did a major renovation last year, and everything looks brand new with the added restaurant side.

      • ah.. then this is the new one…. business must be bad there i suppose. the handrolls are good.

  • Daiso clone?

    • No. You would probably pay more than Y100 in Japan for these tea sets, I doubt that they would have them in Daiso over there.

Having said that…they wouldnt cost much more. There is a lot of padding in the $50 RRP. From the look of them, they look like they have come from a recycle shop too. Maybe $5 AUD tops.

        Isn't Y100 about $1?

    • the pricing is far from daiso clone.

i ended up going to daiso for my sake set :D

i love my sake warm, so I have to put them in a decent container.

    • wtf you guys have no idea..
I was there over the weekend and bought some sets because of the 50% off!

Japan city was one of the most reputable japan homeware shops for many years in Sydney.. more than 10yrs at least.
it is known to be a place to get quality with premium price tag lol.

Its now not doing so well (they closed down many of their store in the last 5 years) probably because of competition and other misc reasons, but the stuff there are not your $2 shop quality LOL

Maybe "some" of the Daiso homeware could be on par with it, but the bargain here e.g. the cup set of 5 for $10 best ever found!

I like going to Japan City because it's pretty and I've bought stuff there over the years. I've also gone several times to Japan specifically to buy pottery both cheap and expensive. However it's definitely not premium quality; it's Japanese, so of course they take care with their goods, but so does the $2.80 Daiso and numerous 100 yen stores throughout Japan.

So no knocking Japan City, it's good, but like most stores selling themselves as being 'exotic' (They're not Noritake after all) I'm pretty sure 50% doesn't even get close to their cost price.

Anyone going to Tokyo-area should visit the 8 floor department store style 100yen/Daiso in Funabashi (technically it's in Chiba).

I used to live 3 stops from there and it has everything. 100yen heaven.

well 105 yen because of sales tax.

        • Yeah, that place (and all the multi level 100 yen stores in Tokyo) are amazing. And funny they still call them 100 yen stores… I'm told they've gone up to 130 yen in some places now? (although I know they really are suffering from bringing prices down as low as possible)

      • just a note in case people didn't know, that not many of their items are made in japan. no surprise i guess, but we were a bit disappointed to see on products either a "made in china" sticker or no country of origin sticker at all :(

  • Does anyone know if this sale is available at Parramatta? Does the Parramatta one still exist?
