Looks like Alienware is off-loading their last gen M18x gaming laptop (with Ivy Bridge + GTX 680M) with a 20% off discount, to open up rooms for newer Alienware 18 with Haswell + GTX 770M/780M SLI. Still pretty impressive spec though, but still with a hefty price tag as well.

For $2,959 you get:

  • Core i7-3740QM
  • 8GB RAM (2x 4GB, up to 4x SIMM)
  • 750GB HDD
  • 18.4" Full HD
  • Dual GeForce GTX 680M with 2GB DDR5
  • DVD Writer
  • Windows 7/8
  • 1 Year NBD Support

And only 5.41kg to lug around. NotebookCheck.net's benchmarks on 680M SLI. Promotion ends Thursday 1 August while stock last.

  • I've heard about overheating issues with Alienware laptops in the past, does anyone have experience with their latest ones?

    • i got this model, with high end games it can go up to 90 degrees which you can feel on the top of the keyboard

      • What sort of damage does that amount of heat do to the innards, and over what amount of time can a computer sustain that sort of temperature without being damaged? Genuine question.

        • i ended up complaining to dell and they said it was normal, and 90 degrees is the absolute max that it will go, i believe at 100 it will automatically shut down if there is any damage due to temperature

        • 90 deg. That's crazy, even my desktop GPU (which is caked in dust from lack of cleaning) doesn't even get anywhere close to that.

You'd have to play in an air-conditioned room to make it run at an acceptable temp.

        • yeah i got a fan underneath now

        • Mate of mine has a m18x with sli 670m and another mate has m17x with single 6990m and no heating issues whatsoever.

I'd check if your heatsinks are on correctly if I were you. If not reseat them with better thermal paste.

        • You should maybe clean your computer…

For that price wouldn't you expect 1TB + maybe an SSD and 16GB RAM?

Would of thought the same. My Asus comp has similar specs except for the graphics card.

    • If you build a Clevo similar, you could easily get those sort of specs for $3k.

In fact, this model is cheaper and aside from a smaller screen (17" vs 18.4") it pretty much dominates the alienware shenanigans.

I have nightmare over my last Alienware trying to get the SSD drive to co-exist with the internal HDD. I end up return the product. I have read a lot of similar complaint on the internet. The only solution is to use the SSD as a secondary drive and not for OS. That would defeat the purpose of having the SSD.

For $2,959…. And only 5.41kg to lug around……

not sure if OP is taking the piss here….

    • Not sure if you're taking the piss yourself. Whilst it is a hefty price, it is a bargain for an alienware laptop with these specs

      • considering he has put the "only" in italics I think it was obvious….

    • At 5.41kg it is indeed quite heavy even for a 18.4" (I think equivalent 18.4" from Toshiba or ASUS is around 4.1kg). However Alienware does need to put in more gears for cooling and it's usually a better constructed gaming laptop.

Still a lot lighter than lugging around your desktop gear + a monitor.

  • I bought an M17Xr4 last year, and it's already had two motherboard replacements about to go in for it's third. This is after a 2 month wait for a new machine because the first techie cracked the glass screen (and apparently it took Dell 2 months to build a new replacement). As good as the deal might be price wise, this Alienware has left a real sour taste in my mouth.

The issue has been the intermittent Audio issue and HDMI port being dicey. Both are recognised problems, looks like they're not fixed yet. Glad I have 3 year warranty >.<

    • Aside from compatibility issue with SSD as bootup device, it also has intermittent flickering and grainy artifacts on one edge whenever I switch from intel CPU graphic processing unit to the AMD GPU until reboot.

It has a mother board replaced by a service person and 3 HDD replaced but the problem still persist. However, I was very happy with Dell's warranty and support. I end up returning the unit and got a Dell Precision M6700 instead.

    • my m18x has a hdmi issue too , it doesn't detect at all, but yeah im glad about the warranty, the tech support is quite good, too bad i can't say the same for the actual technicians

      • mmm, don't alienware customers get 24 hour support?

  • Lot of money for something that will be worth $300 in 3 years.

    • Hardly… have you checked eBay for how well Alienware laptops hold their value?

      • Yeah ok no i didn't, just going on general brands. Would never buy a piece of technology based on brand so i guess my comment is not valid for this.

  • Dropping this sort of cash be sure to use starthere.com.au for further discounts.

    • Thanks for that, hadn't heard of it (live in a cave) ;-)
