Do you think people drive for the fun of it? Well P plater do, but I rely on my car for work, as does my fiancé, so cheap petrol makes a difference.

Public transport in Victoria has been a load of crap since Kennett/the Liberals privitised it. It works out to be $60 per week for a zone 1 and 2 pass. And prices are continuing to rise. Outrageous.

I hate driving the car but with public transport unreliable and no investments being made due to short term thinking, I can understand why people do.

      • +6

I think crappy public transport is not isolated to Melb but the entire country. Its our way of life to invest in expensive-to-use tollways that sees no traffic instead of building metro lines. Maybe cranky lives in the CBD and dont have the same problems us 99% peasants have?

      • +2

$60/week for PT or $60/2 week for driving my car. Obvious choice here!

You know you don't have to post here right? You can just go yell at the television or the neighbourhood children instead. We won't miss you.

It's a sad day when $1.43 a litre for fuel is considered cheap

    • +6

I remember being a kid in the 90s and my old man complaining about the 55c/L unleaded. The mother said "Well just be glad cars don't run on milk!"

These days, it would be a dream if my car could run on milk.

  • +13

why neg when the fuel prices is around the 160c mark all across Melbourne???
saving of nearly 20c per liter not good enough for you with out spending $100 at coles or woolies?

      • +1

its been on for over a week since i asked the attendant how long has the cheap fuel been offered for. the fuel price was 161 at the peak this week. the news link you posted is only available for 30mins also its a promotional event whats the logic behind your comparison?

wouldn't touch united fuel with a ten foot pole

  • Wow bit of hate 'round these parts for poor United.

    • +2

There's been too many reports of cars having issues after using their fuel for me to ever use them .

      • +1

Any links to reports? There's a United around the corner from me which I use every now and then.

      • +1

Been using their fuel ever other week for a few years now (mainly the e10,) never had any problems.

    • +10

Or perhaps you're just a cranky old man ;)

      • -4

        perhaps

    • +6

if i go by public transport itll take double the time and cost more as well.

  • -1

their 95 or 100 octane premium fuel contains 10% ethanol, i guess that's why they are cheaper than others

  • it was 139,9 y'day there

    I posted this yesterday…

it's a month long Promo (very cheap petrol - compared to the other Majors) for the newly opened Hungry Jacks / United.

    +1 for taking the photo!

so jelly, was in Wynnum the other day.. the fuel was a ridiculous $1.84… would surely love this here

    • Which fuel was it? Normal Unleaded or Premium?

      • I got fuel the other day for $1.68 normal unleaded :(

      • Normal :/. And this was a Matilda. Wonder what Coles and woolies were D:

  • Thanks OP ! I have filled at various United Servos in the past with no problems…..I was passing this servo toay and needed petrol.

  • Saw this yesterday then forgot about it. Good to see someone posted it. +1

  • I saw on a old poster from work for kids to look at (I work at a school and I guess 1970's was when the poster was out) 40 (or so) cents a ltr.. I nearly fell over seeing it.

Then I saw 159.4 at Shell, decided to go in and get some, all pumps are out of order…

  • +4

Yep this does make me sad that this is a cheap price… but keep things in retrospect.. imagine if beers prices were even close to fuel prices, what a wonderful it would be!

    • *what a wonderful world it would be!

  • Great price for an independent servo. However, if you get 5% off woollies gift cards plus another 8 cents from your shopping then you should get around 16 cents off petrol, which brings it down to about the same price as here.

  • +1

I filled up there today, but drove past a few other stations around the area (another United and a Liberty) and they were going at the same price.

On the differences between brands, my understanding is that if you're in the same area all the fuels of the same grade regardless of which station you pump from are the same due to the deals the fuel companies made in the yesteryears to improve distribution efficiency.

    • +3

I filled up there today, but drove past a few other stations around the area (another United and a Liberty) and they were going at the same price.

Yep, I mentioned that on the post yesterday, all the independents were around $1.45 and all the Shell / Caltex ( Coles / Woolies) were $1.58, which goes to prove that the supermarket fuel offers are just a scam… They are colluding to artificially increase the petrol price and their is no real savings for the consumer. The ACCC have no balls to act on this…

  • I have a manual diesel car, have to say that when I have a full tank of diesel from the Canterbury Rd servo, my car randomly rev up when it is stopped(engine running, on neutral gear). 2 out of 3 time on full tank it happened. Normal when I mixed with other brand of diesel. Now I try to avoid them.

  • I've always found United and Liberty have their prices 4-16 cents always cheaper than Coles / Shell. In the weeks when Coles have 16 cents fuel vouchers for over $100 purchase the difference can go over 20 cents for the same fuel. I normally do all my weekly shopping at Coles but never used Coles for fuel.

Some of my friends who use Shell were bragging about the fuel quality at Shell and I was tempted to fill with Shell when I had 8 cents vouchers in some weekends. However I found that the number of kilo metres I could drive for litre went down with Shell petrol. I noticed the same for multiple times and then I stopped filling from them completely. Now I always go to a Liberty next to my house.

I don't know much about Woolies fuel though. But I a now almost certain on Coles/Shell. It's just a trap of discount when it's a double win for Coles one side it's their grocery sale and on the other side selling fuel as well.

Can the fuel be any better when it gives less kilometres for a litre?

    • -1

If you get a 16 cents voucher you should fill up with premium unleaded at Shell, it's pretty decent.

      • +1

I can still remember the day I had that 18 cents voucher printed from a thread in OZB. Went to Shell and filled the tank with Unleaded (2nd expensive one) which is what I always fill with. Then had an embarrassment at the counter when the girl at the counter started arguing about the coupon and mentioned it's widely spread and I am second customer who came with that coupon. I said it's not my problem if their system accepts it. So I ended up paying 18 cents less than their inflated price. I was happy for next 10 minutes on my way home.

I saw the Unleaded price at Liberty next to my house is even cheaper than what I paid after 18 cents discount at Shell. That's called Karma. :D

Yet I hadn't paid for my Karma, I ended up getting significant less mileage from what I filled form Shell. I experienced the same before that as well.

In the same way I expect Premium unleaded at BP or Liberty to give better fuel efficiency than the so cold super petrol at Shell. They are just ripping us off by using their grocery retail network Coles.

      where's the Sofia restaurant???

      gone to pizza heaven…

there is a Hungry Jack's there now, so the food quality is much better…

It closed a couple of years ago. The building was empty since then(i think). It got pulled down eventually and the petrol station and hungry jacks was built on the same corner. I liked it when it used to be Sizzler.

      • +2

Ahhhhhh Sizzler how I missed you.

      • I remember when it was a Lone Star steakhouse.

It's been turning into a forest for years, was looking horrible until the new building started. Went up pretty quickly.

    • that's what i said when i drove past it last week..

I filled up at $1.46 in Vermont when I noticed all the others had gone up to $1.65~… Can't believe this shit. I thought it was going to DROP. This is the after effect of Coles/Woolies offering 25-45c off fuel.

  • +1

    Hi Everyone.
Would like to share couple of things here too.
    1) Any Cents discount in Coles =completely ripping you off from both places. to encourage to buy more. regardless unless u fill tank u save around $4- $5.
2)If you remember Coles Express was giving discount on fuel as if you have 4 cents docket from Coles supermarket , and when you buy $2 worth of anything in Coles Express. so total discount you get was 6 cents per litre….
does anyone remember…. now a days… no further discount applies….
    3) with war for getting grocery prices slashed between two giants retailers. they try to make you shop more regarding u spends heaps (either in coles for shopping or buy fuel and spend $$$ at Coles Express)…. what u r exactly trying to save , you have been ripped off with prices from Supermarket Groceries.

Further all slogans.. like from hawthorn to Horsham our prices are same…….that's all are now (down…down….)

100ron, I'll have to keep that in mind.

    • +2

yeah my supra loved it, felt heaps better then normal.

  • +1

Their E10 petrol was $1.39 over the weekend, if your car is ok to take that kind of juice, as most are.

    • +2

Real life testing has shown that E10 fuel results in a 4-5% degradation in fuel economy, so it is really like you are paying 6-7 cents per litre more. So unless E10 is at least 7 cents cheaper than regular unleaded, it is not worth it. Usually E10 is only 4 cents cheaper than regular so I don't use it.

  • -4

Always see silly people filling up ultimate because they think they get more mileage…

    • +1

my car must be silly giving me more mileage on 98

  • +1

Caltex 393-399 South Gippsland Hwy Dandenong South 29/7/2013 5am $139.7

    • Hopefully that means the cycle is on the way down and I can use my 16 cents Coles voucher without getting ripped off….holding off until then by putting in $5-10 every couple of days….

  • Wish that this price is around melb. south east area..

  • never use united servo before, anyone know the quality of the fuel?

  • i'm saddened that nowadays $1.43 is considered a bargain……damn oil sheikhs
