For those of us who buy our airline tickets using expedia.com.br and pay using our 28 Degrees MasterCards we do not get the benefit of free travel insurance that you might if you paid with a gold or platinum card.
That means we may need travel insurance.
Woolies distribute insurance that is underwritten by Hollard. It looks OK, not the best, not the worst. Reasonably priced.
Comprehensive cover for my most recent trip to Asia is cheaper via Woolies than any other insurer listed at http://www.comparetravelinsurance.com.au
Use the code EDRTRAVEL to get 10% off any quote.
Also if you have kids it is extra good value as they are insured for free under a comprehensive policy for their parent(s).
Hopefully no OzBargainers well ever need to claim, but its nice to know you are insured just in case.
Having a look at my CBA premium credit card insurance cover for example (Underwritten by Zurich) you have to spend >$1000 on pre-paid travel expenses (flights, trips, accommodation) with the card before you leave Australia. You then get pretty good insurance for nothing - this insurance also covers your dependent children travelling with you.
A $1000 AUD spend in foreign currency like Brazilian Real incurs fees of $30 (less than I thought) so it is probably better to use your premium credit card where your pre-paid expenses exceed $1000…..
Bear in mind too though you may be paying a whopping annual fee on that premium credit card (but getting awards) and once you are OS, nothing beats taking cash out of ATMs with your 28 Degrees card (28 Degrees have no fees for this, CBA charge 1.75% of the withdrawal amount).
Hard to believe, but I have a feeling those CBA fees have actually fallen in the last couple of years because I could sworn they charged a hefty fixed fee (like $14) + a decent % for ATM withdrawals a year or two ago…
Seems like a good deal. To Hong Kong i was quoted $59 only $100 excess and covered for many things.
