probably it means: 'to be used for pre-paid'

free sim card = free can of smart energy, heh.

    • Haha, true that!

    • +1

      I don't get it

      • +3

i think they mean that with a free sim card comes a mobile number…a mobile number they can get enter on the smart energy drink site to get a free smart energy drink at 7/11.

    • my thoughts exactly

    • Not quite - you'd need to recharge to be able to receive messages - smallest recharge is $10 I believe (which is just for 7 days).

      • To my knowledge, the actual minimum for recharge is $30. The $10 is only a topup - which means you need existing credit.

  • Wondering if this will receive calls/messages without credit - would be handy to give out to people spamming…

    • it should its just a simcard, with no credit you should receive calls

  • lol just picked up one from coles. Paid 29.95 for a sim and 30 days credit for my parents… didnt know it was a big thing they were doing… hehehe

    • No.

The SIM card they are offering is FREE is a $4 one.

      It has absolutely NO credit.

  • i presume a new sim card will mean i get a new phone number?

    • Yes, when you activate

  • Can you port a number to it? I need to park a number somewhere that does not have a charge for the next 6 months. Any thoughts?

From the fine print: "Standard browsing and downloading charges apply. Data usage charged in 60KB increments. $1.32 per 60KB."

    • there's always one

    • your comment does not substantiate a negative for this freebie…which is a free sim card, normally worth $4. The charge is there even if you go pay full price for a sim card.

I was pointing out just one of the many hidden costs to this offer. For comparison even big T only charges $2/MB for casual data; 1/10th of this "deal".

You may get a "$4" sim card for "free", but it could be more cost effective to look for a better deal elsewhere.

Besides, aren't sim cards free anyway? I've never had to pay for one yet.

        • Huh … :) … what is the deal here then … if it's just a SIM card with no credit … ?

        • SIM cards are usually $20 or $30 with the same amount of credit. Vodafone sell them for $2 with no credit at Woolies stores though.
On account customers would get a SIM card for free when they join, but of course that means a 12 or 24 month contract.

          • @SirCH: Huh … curious … I wasn't aware sim cards are sold with $0 credit …

(I normally get Virgin prepaid, with credit, so a sim card is normally included)

  • ???? A free sim with no credit!! (Foundit thinks the same)

Add $30 credit get $30 worth of calls

    VS

    $30 ($29.95) Sim with $30 credit

    So wheres the saving???

maybe one of the 37 who voted for this can enlighten me on the value.

And BTW hasn't Optus also increased its prepaid charges. see comments in this thread http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/10970

Seems like the Marketing dweebs made redundant at Telstra have surfaced at Optus

Ah its FREE its gotta be a deal!!!

    • It's not $0 credit - you get to send 20 (count them, 20!) SMS.

I guess 20 SMS for free (less driving to the post office) is a bargain.

      • -1

Yep 20 free - missed that - damn fine print strikes again (well I'll use that excuse)

But it is only to other prepaid Optus sims. maybe we call all get one here and sms each other with comments rather than use Scotty's bandwidth.

As for saving trips to the PO I'll have to deduct one from the benefit as my mail goes to a PO box

    • Been trying to work out what it can be used for … :P

      • a toy for kids who can handle small objects safely :)
      • if it doesn't expire, cheap emergency sms (where you sms someone you know … not emergency services)
      • practical joke
      • gifts for people with a sense of humor … or that you don't really care about :P (Kris Kringle?)
      • surprise addition to any gifts you do give … :P
      • novel way to get someone's autograph (except those pens seem to rub off of these) :P :P :P
  • cool i got 12 in the mail today one for me one for blinky bill one for spider man and other random names it seems they do not check for multiples

  • That's pretty incredible considering I saw a massive argument at Woolworths when the cashier refused to sell sim cards to a group of Indian students because they had no Australian ID. They had passports and university letters with their course details and residency address but were told they legally weren't allowed the sim cards.

I can imagine the look on the face of the AFP when they trace a sim card used in 'suspected terrorist' activity and find it's registered to a Mr. Spider Man. :D

  • got mine today via registered post

  • Puzzled why this got such a large vote and the Virgin one only got 14 :P

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/8211

Though, with the Virgin one it requires you to use Moneybackco (if you've paid your $10 for the year) or Buckscoop, to get a Sim card for $5, receive $10 credit, then get $7 about 2 - 3 months later :P

Then the Virgin one only lasts 10 days too … (despite what they write on their website or claim)

I guess this is simpler. :)

  • I just got mine today :)
