The Big List of Community Tips

This deal was first discussed on the forums by user Scaregdearimasu. If you haven't familiarised yourself with that particular section of OzBargain, I'd urge you to do so. Sometimes, deals crop up there, too.

13/07/13 - 7:06PM: I'm going to stop being so punctual about updating this thread. Steam prices have been shifting within the first 5-10 minutes of the 8-hour Flash Sales. Expect a 15-20 minute delay from now on.
19/07/2013 - 11:07AM: A few posts back, I mentioned punctuality and how it's better that I wait 15-20 before updating this post. Here's proof that Steam shifts their prices during the first 5-10 minutes.
22/07/2013 - 11:14AM: It would appear that Arma II: Combined Operations works out to be cheaper than purchasing the standalone product, Arma II. As this was the case, I have opted to update the deal with Combined Operations, a saving of $0.21.
23/07/2013 - 7:58PM: Barring no surprises from Steam's end, this will be my final update for this post. It's been a very enriching experience for me as responsibility over these updates required consistent dedication: To be able to post in a timely and efficient manner. I hope that I've served the community well these past ten days, and that I will continue to do so in the forthcoming weeks leading up to the Winter Sale. Happy Summer Sale.

      • Yeah it is Reus, I looked at the page source for the steam sale and the next postcard in the sale pile (underneath today's current KSP postcard) is Reus.

  • Dammit, I missed CS:GO at $5 (now $10). Will it go back down?

    • Probably

  • OMG so many games to choose from don't know where to start, my CC will be on red alert :)

    • +3

Really? So far I've only seen one game I wanted (not really wanted, but it does drifting so well) at a decent price and that was Grid (1) @ $3.75. Everything else seems pretty average priced. Perhaps I've been spoiled.

      • I'm still a nooby so I picked up Defiance, CS Complete and was gifted Hotline Miami so far.

Also I might grab Grid at that price.

  • +2
    • Considering Steam may re-download redists anyway if they are missing, wouldn't a better option be to symlink those folders to a single directory containing those shared files? So that way Steam still sees the packages are there, but disk space is not wasted buy duplicate data?

  • +2

    Yawn.

The last 3 games I bought

    -borderlands 2 +seasons pass
    -Civ 5 gold edition
    -Civ 5 brave new world
    -Skyrim

Have all been from GMG/ Amazon and for cheaper prices than what steam would be willing to discount too.

    • +2

Well, all the games you mentioned are price gouged in Steam AU, so that's not surprising.

      • don't forget to make the price hurt less grabs some steam wallet cards at EB for 1 to 1 aud to usd. :)

        • yep went to jb and eb and only EB sell the Wallet vouchers unfortuneltly but 10% is a nice saving.
but only available in 20 and 50 increments.

  • So do we need to use VPN to access the US store?

Good luck trying to get anything from the store though, Valve are pretty strict when it comes to bypassing their catalogue when it comes to using a VPN.

    • The prices are in USD on the android app… I don't know if they are readjusted because I am connecting from AU though but I have a US proxy account and alot of the prices seemed to be the same? Which prices are listed much higher on the AU store so I can check what it says on the android app?

EDIT: Ok I just checked black ops 2 on the US store and its about 10 dollars cheaper than AU… So yes definitely tons of Australia tax going on

      • Little late now but you can check here to see all the different pricings of the main sale items.

      • Ok I just checked black ops 2 on the US store and its about 10 dollars cheaper than AU… So yes definitely tons of Australia tax going on

Only $10 difference is actually pretty good for both Steam & Activision.. MW2 is on sale and it still costs $50+ more in AU compared to the US.

  • +3

would be temping if I actually had time to play games these days. Kids.

    • +3

      Wife.

      • Hookers

  • The Steam.db sales link isn't working now.

  • Awesome time of year - I get to buy games I never play ;-)

    Anyone tried Infestation? http://store.steampowered.com/app/226700/

ed. lots of bad PR out on the net for that game.

    • Don't be fooled, it's The WarZ rebranded.

  • How does Saints Row the Third stack up for $5 against previous sales?

    • +5

If you take into consideration Humble's THQ Bundle: Poorly.

      • Unfortunately missed that. How about Saints Row 3 + All DLC for $7.50?

    • still a very fun game for $5 would recommend it's like GTA but with tons more crazy and ridiculous thrown in only thing I'd say about it was I wish it was a little longer.
I bought the full game (with all dlc) package for something like 9$ at some point and still think it was worth that much I'd spring for the full one at 7.50 if you think this game might interest you.

  • Day Two is Up! http://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/comments/1i5w4v/steam_summ…
Personal Best Picks would be FTL (As low as it's been before but Excellent game) and The Walking Dead (It's been cheaper through the Humble Bundle but still worth every cent)

    • Walking Dead price matched by Amazon then beaten by 15% with Gooncave promo code.
      http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Online-Game-Code/dp/B007W…

      • If you buy your Steam cards in JB or EB then you aren't saving any more than 5% by getting the game from Amazon.

        • +1

          Hey it's OzBargain, 5% is 5% :-)

        • Thought you could only use the promo code once on Amazon though?

  • +4

    Some recommendations (hurry expire soon):
    Chivalry mediaeval Warfare $6.24 http://store.steampowered.com/app/219640/

    Legend of Grimrock $3.74 http://store.steampowered.com/app/207170/

    Just Cause 2 $2.99 http://store.steampowered.com/app/8190/

    Far Cry 3 $21 http://store.steampowered.com/app/220240/

    GTA4 Complete $7.49 http://store.steampowered.com/app/12210/
(NB cheaper buying the bundle with EFLC than GTA4 by itself)

    Divine Divinity $2 http://store.steampowered.com/app/214170/

    Two Worlds $2 http://store.steampowered.com/app/1930/

    Skyrim Legendary Edition $37.50 http://store.steampowered.com/sub/28187/

Hmm, the Civilization games are massively overpriced for us Australians, almost double. Civ 5 Gold is $25 for Americans (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/25544/?snr=1_7_7_151_150_1…), but $45 for AU. And 2K are also aggressively target piracy, sending thousands of DMCA takedowns to Google. A greedy, thoroughly despicable company.

  • Jesus I'd like the new Civilization 5 expansion (Brave New World) but it is massively overpriced :(

    • I believe GMG had it for around $20 previously

  • hmm Sleeping Dogs won, Wonder whether to get it or not heard good things but boy they sure have a lot of dlc for it might be cheaper in the long run to wait for a full package deal might even be cheaper at that point.
Or is any of that dlc particularly worth it? God I hate DLC.

    • Damn game votes keep going against me. I was really hoping for KoTOR 2.

  • Anyone played Defiance?

    • Not yet. Bought it yesterday, friends say its good but unpolished.

      • I've been watching the tv show… it's not bad, but could be better. I'm just hoping the tie-in with the game means a low chance of the show being cancelled early.

        • Yeah I don't mind the show. I think it's being backed well enough, hopefully we should get a few seasons and it may develop.

  • OMG missed out on sleeping dogs, saw the sale and went to cook a meal and its gone..

    • +2

Don't worry about it. It'll be back up on discount at the end of the Summer Sale. I'll flick you a reminder when that happens.

13/07/13 - 9:00PM EDIT I'm not actually sure if it will return on the final day as it was a community choice. Can someone verify that?

      • No idea, I'm hoping that all the un-voted ones come up on the encore but I can't see that happening myself.

        • Usually they are in flash sales, so keep an eye out

        • Yeah I'm keeping an eye out, cheers. I was up at 5am to check the flash sale lol.

      • thanks, i've bookmarked this page to regularly check it, can't believe i missed out though damn.

  • +10

To the OP who keeps updating this thread, a BIG THANK YOU for all your effort much appreciated :)

    • +5

Why not give the deal a vote to show your appreciation?

  • I just Paypal American friends and get them to gift me games I want so I save money. I'm a total cheapass even during steam sales!

  • -2

Bought Borderlands2 for 11 bucks SCORE

    • +1

How'd you get it for $11?

    • Let us in on this secret

      • It's probably reddit trading

      • I checked the value (at the time of his post) of Borderlands 2 via an American proxy. It was $11. So yes, either he went through reddit trading like beakeroo said, or he used an American IP address.

  • +1

That SimCity 4 deal isn't good at all…I definitely recall it being 75% off in the past.

    • +2

EA/Unnecessary always online DRM, no thanks.

  • Bought YNAB. I quite like my Excel setup but I'm hoping this is better.

    • bought too. even if I can just use it to import CC statements I'll be happy

  • +1

seems like there may be a price error on sims 3 as its $19.99
but when you click on it , the bundle with sims 3 + university life is $19.99 while the sims 3 on its own is $39.99
    http://store.steampowered.com/sub/26075/
i ended up buying it :P

    • I am trying to decide if pricing error or sale price on purpose and is 50$ discount good….it may go 75% at some stage >_<

      • looks alright for $20 for the expansion included, wasn't it $25 just for sims 3 before?

  • oops

  • It's alright anybody that missed a sale! usually there's an encore sale at the end of summer sales that brings the top selling games back :)

  • Rubbing hands for this time next year, Total War: Rome II will be at a good price and with patches!

  • Today I bought Kerbal and Portal 2, can't wait till tomorrow :-D

    • Tempted by KSP but I bought Portal 1&2 and Deadlight.

  • Anyone keen on splitting a 4 pack of borderlands 2? Takes it down to around $12.

    • 4 pack? 4 copies of border 2? I'll take one for 12 if you get it!

      • Realised there was only an hour left at that price when I posted that. Hopefully it will be on sale again. Likely.

  • Day 5 Is up http://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/comments/1icl0c/steam_summ…
Also Valve complete Pack is now 66% off the cheapest it's ever been. (not sure if purchasable in OZ (L4D1/L4D2)
    http://store.steampowered.com/sub/29197/

    • I can access it from Steam…but L4D2 still says Low Violence version.

      • well nice to see it's even an option for the last few sales I remember it wasn't even an option to buy the valve complete pack.

  • I'm hoping that SquareEnix does a price drop on Deus Ex:HR…85% off, but we have to pay 75c more :(

    • Most likely this will be the case. I sincerely doubt the others would beat Deus Ex to the vote purely by the amount discounted.

      • True that, I didn't want any of the games so I just voted the one with the biggest discount.

        • Yep, me too.

        • That could be said for just about all the community choice selections so far :p

  • Is Wargame: Airland Battle likely to be any cheaper than it is today?

  • has counter strike complete package been reduced yet? thanks!

    • yes on the first day, it was $7.50

      • really??? was it the complete package though? together with condition zero and source?

        • yep, cs go by itself was 5

        • +1

It'll be back on the last day. Loving CSGO. I can't believe PlayStation never released it in AU/EU.

  • FYI Max Payne Bundle (1 & 2) area also on sale for $3.74 USD hidden away in there! Just got it as I recently finished the third game and I felt a wave of nostalgia

  • Awesome sleeping dogs is back, and DMC

  • Don't buy the Crysis collection. You can get it cheaper for a total of $17.97USD if you purchase crysis, crysis warhead and crysis 2 maximum edition separately.

  • My prime picks of good deals from today's line up so far are:
Crysis obviously (all) http://store.steampowered.com/app/108800/ - Crysis 1 is straight up amazing to play and look at. Crysis 2 not as much so but still a worthy purchase
Amensia http://store.steampowered.com/app/57300/ - Been wanting this for ages now, cheapest price I've seen in the last 6 months or so was 50% off / $10USD. Pretty much tops the list of every top-10 scariest games ever lists.
Serious Sam 3 http://store.steampowered.com/app/41070/ - Allways good for some ridiculous fun. I already have it but might grab a copy for a mate
Alan Wake http://store.steampowered.com/app/108710/ - Unfotunately don't know much at all on this one but with the steep discount it gets my vote. It certainly looks impressive, but I can't shake the feeling that it's not my type of game. Given that I'm a scunge with games now days I'll probably leave it considering the others on offer.

Oh and skyrim for those who didn't already buy it a long time ago, or needs to finish off their DLC purchases http://store.steampowered.com/sub/28187/
Seems they haven't given the 50% discount on Dragonborn DLC like when it was on the daily sale… Shame. Lucky I got it already :D

Some pretty decent deals today at least I must say! I was pretty let down till now.

    • I really enjoyed Amnesia, but then I hated Crysis so not everthing is for everyone.

      • Crysis 1 or 2? I could understand 2 easily, I didn't like it on my first attempt at playing, only after playing crysis 1.

Crysis 1 just feels like Far Cry (original) on steroids to me. Unless that niche of the genre just isn't your thing.

Each to there own though of course. Like when you just randomly play a game, thought it was amazing, then go on to find that it's consistently rated 4/10 or something in review… very confusing :p

        • 1, never played 2. It was pretty but it was short, with a stupid story and terrible ending. Zero grav part was a good idea but slow and tedious in reality.

Gameplay was fine but pretty generic and 'meh' given the huge hype they did about how amazing it would be.

        • I loved 1, played it when it came to PSN a couple of years back. 2 I thought was really boring, it seemed to have fell into the Halo wannabe bracket for me.

  • +1

    Day 6 is Up http://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/comments/1if9mf/steam_summ…
also heads up just checked for some reason even though AC3 is only 40% off all the others (Ac1/2/Brotherhood/revelations) appear to be 75% off
    been waiting for this point.
