Sennheiser Amperior (Silver) $199+Shipping from JB Hi-Fi (Pick up Also Available)

150

Found this on JBHiFi's website today. I just placed my order for pickup. Best price I've seen so far locally. Browsing through their site shows that it's even cheaper than HD25.lol

If this is not your cup of tea and want to spend more because you just received your tax return, or expecting to get something from it, then Sennheiser HD650 is also on sale @Amazon.fr at approx AUD356 delivered.

Stay classy

Whats the difference between these and the HD25's?

  • +6

For anyone who wants to know, the Amperior differs from the standard HD25 with aluminium earcups, a lower impedance for portable players and an iDevice remote. Tyll at the website Innerfidelity has measured the Amperior and found that the use of aluminium slightly reduces resonances from the earcup. The overall sound is slightly different. http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/most-excellent-sennheis…

JB Hi Fi is probably offering a discount price because the Amperior is now discontinued. It is being replaced with an "Aluminium Edition" of the HD25 which uses the same high impedance driver as the HD25 and loses the remote.

I'm reviewing a pair of the HD25's for my Youtube channel (lachlanlikesathing) and while I can tell you the HD25 sounds nice and warm and bassy, it is a professional headphone with very high clamping force and a split headband that may make it unsuitable for portable use.

    • What makes you think it is unsuitable for portable use?

It is my one and only portable pair…

As I said, clamping force is very high and the split headband is fussy and doesn't always work for people with longer hair. The cable is long as well (though shorter on the Amperior). I'm not saying you cannot use it as a portable headphone, just that the design was originally intended for DJ and broadcast use where stability of fit is very important. Other headphones like the Sony MDR-1R and Sennheiser Momentum for instance are more comfortable for general use.

Happy HD25 owners, please don't jump down my throat! The HD25 is a good headphone. I see a lot of people wearing them on the street and after talking to a DJ I think it deserves its legendary reputation for durability. However it's clear that even Sennheiser was not positioning the HD25 for general consumer use; that is why it is harder to find in retail outside of DJ stores. The Amperior was an experiment to see if the HD25 could sell in general retail. Obviously the experiment was unsuccessful given that the design was discontinued very quickly.

        • Hey, I wasn't jumping down your throat :-)

I was just curious about that statement… And also wanted to provide a second different opinion.

    • When I bought my Momentum I also noticed that this model had a similar price point. Given they are continueing to release new Momentum versions (including some announced this week), thats possibly another reason for discontinueing these. Given the customer base of stores like JB, I'm guessing the momentum would be an easier mass market sell.

  • The Amperior is a great headphone for any aspiring DJs. Definitely a great pick.
