Thanks OP. Use this for Ebay purchases, the 2 points for $1 spent beats Rewardscentral 1 point for $1 spent easily I believe :)

    • No worries. It's 8 points per $1 on Tontine - wish I'd found it earlier.. so many people jumped on that sale.

I think Qwibble 7% cashback offer would still be better. To redeem for gift cards I believe Velocity works out to about 1 point = $0.007. So 8 points would be $0.056 back for $1 spent, compared to Qwibble $0.07 back for $1 spent. That is assuming you use Velocity for gift cards, if you used for flights it is alot better value of course and the 8 Velocity points would work out better than the Qwibble 7% cashback.

    • ebay used to be always 2 points for $1 spent … and promotion in 2012 was 4 points for $1 spent :(

Why use Velocity shopping when you can get cashback instead?

    Let's compare:

ASOS offers 2 points per $1 spent

whereas via cashback, say via Cashrewards you get 7% cashback.

A $100 transaction would net you 200 points with Velocity.
    $7 cashback with Cashrewards.

So how much is 200 Velocity points worth?

    Well it's 14,000 point for a $100 Coles gift card. $0.007/pt. 200 points thus equals $1.40

AFF members value it at different levels between $.01 and $.023 per point. So 200 points is $2 or $4.60.

Unless you can find a reward or reward flight that will cost > 3.5c then I think shopping via Velocity Rewards provides bad value. Additionally, you'll have to save enough points to use it towards something, whereas with cashback you'll be able to receive a payment (some sites have minimums).

TL;DR: Velocity provides bad value vs. cashback sites.

I don't use Velocity instead of cashback sites, as per previous comment.

However as far as cashback for Ebay purchases, there are no cashback sites, you only have option of RewardsCentral or Velocity.

So that is why this is a good deal :)

1.4% cashback on Ebay purchases compared to approx 0.98% cashback at Rewardscentral.

If there is a better option around or cashback option for Ebay that I don't know about then please let me know :)

Good call. The eBay part is good just not the rest. Curious to how they get cashback for that.

        • Yeah I only ever use Velocity for Ebay.

As mentioned everything else is poor value compared to cashback sites, although if you use Velocity points for flights, and wait for a double point deal like this, their may be some stores that work out slightly better value, but as you said having cash is alot more freedom than points.

From what I read, as of June 16 2011, Ebay suspended all its relationships with cash back websites.

I have used RewardsCentral ever since, which works out to almost 1% cashback and just switch to Velocity when the double points deal come. Velocity does track and pay it a bit quicker than RewardsCentral and is more reliable.

I am the guy in the family and friend circle that always has to buy things off Ebay for other people, so these points certainly do add up over the years :p

    • Good math for this time of night.

    • fantabulous Neil !

  • i use mixture of starthere and qwibble (buckscoop) depending who has the highest cashback …haven't tried the other ones yet

  • If you're already building up velocity points (eg if you fly virgin a fair bit), then it could be worth using this for points IMHO.
I've been building up points over time and exchanging them for gift cards/etc, and although cashback schemes are worth more 'on paper', my points for flying are worthless if not used - so why not add to them however I can? This also stops me having to use several cashback sites, working out which is best for each retailer etc.

  • Good post OP, much appreciated.
