I saw review from this site http://www.productreview.com.au/p/star-tracker-50mm.html. it has got 1 star. I found couple site rate this product at 2 for average. Don't think this is a good deal.

whats the range on these? could i say…. see into a window 1km away?

      hmmm

that sounds like a total legit use

      • well something about mary is on the tv tonight…

    • Unlikely. How much detail you see isn't dependent just on distance but on size. If it's too far away, all you're doing is magnifying it. You can't resolve something that small.

The Hubble space telescope can't see into Pluto's surface for instance. Or detailed surface features of any planet really. Not because they're too far but because they're too small. If all they appear as is a dot, then even if you magnify that dot, you're not going to gain any more detail.

The Andromeda galaxy on the other hand is very big in the sky. You can get a nice look at that, even though it's relatively very far away compared to anything in our galaxy.

  • Ordered one. $20 is pretty cheap, even for a budget telescope. These will go nicely with my $10 binoculars from a few months back….

  • While cheap, it is simply too small to provide a good view of the night sky apart from looking at the moon.

Unless you are planing to spy on your neighbours, save yourself $20.

    • Unless you are planing to spy on your neighbours,

That is what nosdan said :)

      • His neighbour is 1km away from him?? I'm guessing his annual bath is coming soon?

        • nosdan lives 950m away from luka apparently

it has rained a whole day in sydney.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but telescopes aren't any good for looking at land objects due to them being upside down?

    • yep. the piece to make land objects appear the right way up would cost more then the telescope

      • Must depend on the telescope as I had a Soviet one as a kid that was not upside down. That as far as my telescope knowledge goes though :)

        • +2

In mother Russia, telescope look through you!

    • No. A single lens will show the image upside down. Telescopes have two lenses typically, so the image is actually upside upside down.

      • Urgg, I don't know about this. My glasses are single lens but things still appear upright.

        • So much for my attempt at humour.

You are correct, it's a little more complex than my previous description. It takes a page or two of text to explain how lenses and combinations of lenses work, so I won't try it here.

If you have access to a Physics textbook from high school, they always have an "Optics" chapter which explains how lenses do their magic.

Here is a not-particularly-clear explanation on Wikipedia, read the section on Galileo's telescope:

    Please save your hard-earned money.

    Mine already in the landfill.

    • theearth - how ironic

  • Scored a cheap dse telescope from a garage sale once… as "theearth" said… landfill. That's where mine went.

  • I got one, thanks… It is a cheap, pretty useless telescope.
But, it is an excellent toy for children play. For 20 bucks who expects more.
I am very happy, kids are happy, all waiting for tomorrow night (hoping a clear sky).
At the end of holiday our telescope will join to others…

  • Star trackers incorporated!

  • Gonna set one of these up at the beach to look at "beach whales" ;)

    • fat chance of that this time of year wolfie

      • look at "beach whales" ;)

        *white pointers and bronzed whalers..
