  • nice find
not sure if you can price match at OW to this model

I don't think you would want to. The Bing Lee notebook has a better processor.

  • Going overseas in 3 weeks… $293 after TRS… should I or shouldn't I???

    • +1

if u need one, yes. but the processor may be slow. better try it before buying.

      • Thanks fchis. I basically use my current 5 year old Acer Aspire 1410 for internet browsing, downloading music and movies, and playing movies on planes.

        This might do?

I'm just a bit concerned about the 14" screen size… I like my very portable 12" Aspire. I'll check it out at the shop.

        • In a similar boat. Looking for a new laptop for the wifey… uses for internet banking, facebook, emails, Word etc.

I've been out of the game too long. No idea what is a reasonable spec for the price!

        • Apparently there's only one 14" (touch)screen made worldwide, and its a horrible screen, I had the Asus S400 and sold it after two weeks.

        • The Acer 1410 is an ultraportable with a u9x00 ULV processor - the CPU in this is significantly better.

        • Ranagade, arent you the ideal person for a tablet? Not that they are cheaper than this

  • +1

After a quick bit of research looks like the CPU is on par with some on the Gen2 i3 Processors. Definitely keep away from the Officeworks or JB HiFi models as they have the crappy Pentium 997 CPU which scores the same as the older Core2 DUO CPUs

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/mid_range_cpus.html Look for a score of 1921

  • +1

So, what… No USB or other network / audio connections or ports…?!?

    Possible correction… -if- model matches:

    "PART NUMBER: NX.M7LSA.002-C77-AS

    - 720p HD audio/video recording
    - 4 cell battery
    - Up to 5 Hours battery life

And… Bing Lee doesn't seem to show any tel. # for customer service?!?

    • what's wrong with the 1300 980 399 number?

      • Dunno… at this busy time of pre-EoFY, maybe they just don't post it (save us both time, maybe ;-)

I didn't see it at the web site in any case.

Thanks for posting it here… :-)

  • Their "Gigya Socialize" front-end to PayPal and/or Bing Lee's order entry system are =S=L=O=W=

  • +1

should I, shouldn't I… I always hesitate until it sells out and then say DAMMIT, i should've bought it! …

Anyone have any comments on build quality, reliability etc.

    • +5

That is my money saving strategy…

    • in the same boat….

    • +4

dammit, ozbargain went down for 5 mins, so i stressed out and bought it. Damn you ozbargain.

dual core?? even worse than first generation i3, is it?

    • +1

      Yeah, but it is $330.

      do you even read?

      • BRO.?

    • Not true. i3 M 330 is lower, almost even with M 350 too. This laptop for the price/weight/features is great value. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3…

      • Sorry, reply too late, was meant for " alwayseric "

  • We do not have Bing Lee in Brisbane so who else might stock this model so I can see a physical one prior to buying it? Dick SMith and JB Hi Fi seem to sell the 15" one.

    • office works ?

    • I just checked out the 14" out JB Hi-Fi at Chermside—right size, though may have been a different CPU. This is a nice looking machine for the price! Seriously thinking about getting one.

      • Me too, although it wasn't powered up. Good build quality for a mostly plastic machine.

  • Nice deal, luv cashback offers on Acer/Asus laptops. it seems those offers never stop

  • Great deal. Be warned though. The specs aren't great for a laptop in general. This is for strict casual use. The only downside with buying such cheap laptops is that it'll get outdated much sooner. Sometimes it is worth putting in the extra money to slightly futureproof your laptop.

  • Do we know dimensions and weight on this laptop?

    • +1

      weight 2.2kg, thickness 25mm, dunno L and W

    • Actually to answer my own question:
      http://www.acerstore.com.au/acer/store/index.php/aspirev5-43…

      DESIGN
      - 25mm thin, 2.2 kg Light weight silver chassis
      - High Definition 14.0" mulit touch screen

Which is surprisingly heavy considering how thin the thing is i think..

      • Yeah its definitely no ultrabook

      • Having held it, I suspect the 2.2kg is with power brick, but I could be wrong.
Also, looking on ebay, a spare battery is under $50.

  • just ordered one

  • Dumb qn - how do you get free shipping?

    • when it asks you to choose shipping method, your 2 options should be "Free shipping: Free" and "In store Pickup: Free"….

      • thanks!

website is playing up and I cant get to that point… stupid IE8…

        • They've got some funky new website design that seems to be a little iffy. Try chrome.

  • How long do we think these will last I would love to hold one in a shop first.

    • at a rough guess, at the rate they are going, I would say they will be sold out today.

      • Wrong thread.

  • What's the ram configuration like? Can I add another stick?

    • yep, 4gb in one slot, one slot spare

      • damn you.. you're making this awfully tempting…

        • +2

apparently 89$ cachback not 69.. that should push u over the edge.

  • I took a look at lunch time in JB Hi Fi. The screen seems ok but quite washed out. There is no contrast adjustment just a brightness and text on a white background it not that great. It is quick though and for the price seems good.

    • you can adjust and recalibrate through intel graphics properties

      right click on desktop

  • Do you think it would be hard to swap out the HDD for a 128GB Flash Drive?

    • No real details but doesn't sound like a straight forward task " Replacing the hard disk with an SSD is also quite the undertaking"

      Source: http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/4427/13/acer-aspire-v5-431p-…

      • Im curious about this… why would it be so hard?

        • If the chassis back comes open and the hard drive is accessible then its possible. It's only hard if you have never done it before and have no idea what you are doing. But if you've done it before then it should be easy.

EDIT: Ohhh, Hard drive does not have easy access… It can be done but requires almost complete disassembly of the laptop :(

How to replace hard drive full guide (in spanish, for your amusement):

          http://yepair.com/guias/guia-de-reparacion-portatil-disco-du…

Short Version: Remove all screws on the bottom and the battery. Look under the battery for the little grey buttons. Push on these to pop up the keyboard. Remove keyboard and remaing screws underneath. Disconnect cables. Lift. Hard drive exposed! Good luck folks.

          Source: Acer Forum

        • Seriously complete disassembly of the laptop? where is the hDD then? under the motherboard? this sucks, i definitely wanted to add an SSD.

        • Was just about to post the same link.. honestly, it's not insanely hard. Looks straight forward enough, but yeah, not ideal.

        • From the text it looks like its just underneath the keyboard, so not quite a complete disassembly, but still a pain in the ass

        • +1

we gotta stop replying at the same time lol

        • the dvd drive can be replaced with a hdd caddy

oh wait hmmm the pics don't look like they have a dvd drive but the specs list it…

  • -1

Any ideas on the weight? Could not see it on the ACER web site.

  • +1

Just went and bought one at Bing Lee Haymarket for $398.

    According to http://ec3.acer.com.au/AcerCashBack/ACA/Projects/CashBack/Lo…

It is $89 dollar cashback and not $69. I have sent it in with the highlighted version. Hopefully they honored it as $89.

Edit it weighs 2kg with the battery

    • Great spotting " dcnguyen82 ", $ 89 cashback makes this laptop a " BARGAIN ".

      • Booyah!

        Can anyone confirm this?

        • Will not know 100% until you get that approved Acer eftpos card in the mail with $69, but hopefully $89 on it. Takes about 4 to 6 weeks to process. Either way this makes it a Great Bargain IMO.

    • hmm i remember reading in the whirlpool forum for the Acer Iconia W510/W511 that people are having trouble getting the cashbacks honoured http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2021771

      • Personally I've went through a couple of Acer's cashbacks with no issues.

    • Got one from Haymarket too.
No card fee for Amex, which is nice. Bing Lee price tage says $698, which should help with the explanation to my partner…

    • +1

I had this problem the other day with the cashback listings. There's more than one listing, and the details vary between them… it's very confusing.

This page says it's $89 cashback:
      http://ec3.acer.com.au/AcerCashBack/ACA/Projects/CashBack/Lo…

This page says it's $69 cashback:
      http://ec3.acer.com.au/AcerCashBack/ACA/Projects/CashBack/Lo…

It's the "entity" code at the end of the URL that determines which list you get. Both of these lists are found through a Google search.

Does anyone know the finer details about this? I guess once you actually register the purchase date and SNID, you'll find out which program you're in and what cashback you're entitled to.

      • I wasn't able to register on the $89 one, but the $69 one did work.

  • Does anyone know how the IGPU performs? It's Ivy Bridge but not the HD4000 since it's the Pentium series. Kind of my last hurdle before jumping =P

    Thanks,

    • Good enough for everything normal such as web surfing, you tube and videos ( easily play 1080p ), just don't expect to do any serious gaming or video editing on these IGPU's.

      • +1

Looking at the specs on intels page it seems to be just a fraction less performance than HD4000, and with less features like quicksync and all that stuff no one's that familiar with.

  • +1

bought one . down $326 or whateve :(

  • How would this go for doing casual coding? I'm guessing the screen size would be the killer.

    • +1

HD screen would probably be better… but for the price…..

  • Btw, Rhodes Bing Lee wouldn't honour the $398 price when I called them up just then. Salesman tried to argue that was the price AFTER the cash back.

So I called the Burwood store. All sorted.

    • +1

Stupid salesman, I would've told him to check his own website and get his facts straight.

      • Is Bing Lee a franchise operations like Harvey Norman?

  • BAM! Out of stock.

    • Snap, had to do a couple of things before the sun went down, I snooze, I loose…

  • LOL salesman at Bing Lee told me that its $398 after cashback. I told him go check again because the sample he had said $398 with bonus $69 cashback LOL.

  • i've just purchased two of them from my local binglee got them for $385 each before cash back.(pick up tommorrow
Does anyone know if they have a built in microphone can not see it in the spec's

  • Thoughts on buying this and claiming the $300 against tax? Or would it be frowned upon not to claim depreciation since its $9 over?

    • Out of stock now anyway. Shouldn't have procrastinated!

      • More stock has just appeared. I managed to place an order… good luck to anyone else still wanting to grab one!

        • Out of stock again? Please say it ain't so…

  • Typing this on the new system. It is fairly heavy, dense for the size.
Keyboard is OK, but I'm not a touch typist.
    Win8 is a bit painful.
The CD drive is not the easy to remove sort, I had some thoughts of adding an SSD in the drive bay.
Seems fairly snappy overall, but then, all new systems do, don't they!

    • Thanks for the details mskeggs. Can you also please let us know if you're presented with $69 or $89 cashback when you register your purchase date and SNID? Hanging to know which it is!

    • Cheers for the details :)

    • I told a lie, the optical drive can be removed by removing one screw. It accepts a 9.5mm tray.
I haven't had time to try and install an SSD yet.

  • +1

    Appears to still be available?

    • +1

Ha, it is too. They must keep finding more stock.

      • +1

        annnnddd…. it's gone.

  • Bought one yesterday, tried to register for the $89 cash back but the SNID wasn't recognised. Tried again under the $69 cash back and the SNID was recognised!

Not sure what's happening there. Either way it's a pretty sweet deal. Lappy runs well, start up takes longer than I expected though.
