  • Anyone know how these stack up against Topfield or other brands? (like the one that was posted a few days ago?)

Surely you are around Bruce? :-)

    • +2

Huh, who me - I'm not touching this. Don't want to be accused of another deal Bruced® ;-)

(But it made me curious enough to look…)
Won't be anywhere as good as a Topfield. But neither is the price!!
User interface (how easy/intuitive is it to operate, to use EPG to record, can you add recording time easily to start/end of program, etc) & unit stability (not freezing when recording 2 HD programs while "chase playing" (see below) another live channel or playing a recording) are crucial for use. There is no way of knowing until you use the PVR. There is no convention for PVR design, so every one operates a little different. The only thing in common now, is they often come out of the same factory in China.

      Says…
high speed processor the PVR6600 can process 3 streams simultaneously (Great! Can record 2 Networks at a time, with 1 channel on each recording & watch any channel on those 2 networks; or record 2 on 1 network & can view all channels on all networks)
has multiple Video and Audio outputs operating at the same time (Multiple screens - HDMI to 1, component to another)
Record two programs at once and watch a recorded file simultaneosly. (good)
Playback programs while recording (Chaseplay) (very good - for a cheapie, as long as it does not freeze)
Seek play and jump function during playback. (again should be good)
Pass through antenna connectors - without need for a loop cable to join the 2 tuners found on cheapies. (good)
X2 X4 X8 X16 X32 speeds FORWARD & SLOW (fairly usual, but slow is not seen much now)
Aspect button (useful for CRT TVs)
Manual states The PVR has the ability in set up options for you to start a recording early or finish late. (Very Good!)

      BUT
Manual states If the unit locks up with no functions it will require a full power reset to reboot machine. - turn it off at the power point & on again!! (If it tells you that at the start of the manual - it is a common problem!!! WARNING!)

Read the manual for a better idea - I have lost interest after that!
And look up other posts by 2ndsWorld for feedback about their business - they have had a few cheap PVRs.

But look into the specs (links posted by g12345567 above) show it is an old machine:
      S-Video socket - ANCIENT!

But has USB 2.0 Host connector - you can add an external HDD
      Manual shows…
USB Recording - An external hard drive ( max 320Gb ) can be connected to the PVR for recording programs directly onto. The file format is FAT32 and the PVR can be used to format the hard drive. Files from the internal hard drive can be transferred to external hard drive but cannot be replayed by the PVR. (Underwhelming!)
Controls are on the front panel (nice, in case you lose the remote))

How the PVR saves the recordings is important. Does it store with program name, or just channel-date-time etc, which is far to difficult to work out what was recorded (used by all USB recorders I tested a couple of years back). Als what video format (so you can play on another device (eg PC) - many are proprietary formats which make conversion necessary.

Discussed a quite respectable but rebuilt $95 (delivered) Beyonwiz with users last night & discovered it has problem of not recovering after a power outage (Agh!) http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/105643
These are issues you won't know about until that recording you really wanted was lost because someone unplugged the PVR for a second & did'nt tell you. I travel overseas for months & leave a PVR recording unattended. The Beyonwiz would record nothing if there was a momentary power outage on day 1.

Oh no, this deal has been Bruced® ;-)

  • Recieved PVR in the mail today and won't turn on! Help OP!!

    • Is it plugged in? :-)
Drop us an email with your order number or reply to your order email with a quick description of the problem and customer service will get onto it asap. We will obviously swap it out free of charge if the unit was dead on arrival…

  • Thanks OP, I spoke to one of your staff Mona over the phone today and she has sent me via email a free aus post postage slip to get the dead unit back to you.

Haha and yes it was plugged in :-p Fingers crossed unit number 2 goes much better!
