I paid $460 for my ME400 and have put it to good use since. I also picked up the Acer W510 over the weekend and performance wise they are identical. I would say the W510 has a better bundle (includes OTG microUSB cable, micro HDMI adapter, felt case) and has two advantages which are haptic feedback for the capacitive Windows key and a charging port that does not prevent you from using USB at the same time like the ME400.

If you want, you can try price-match at Officeworks to take an extra 5% off making it $375.25. I price-matched mine at OW when I bought my original ME400C.

Windows RT is kinda pointless with Atom tablets like this!

    • +1

I would have to agree.. battery life is pretty impressive on these and the fact it can run nearly every x86 app is pretty amazing. It's likely Windows RT tablets will fall sharply though, Dell are doing their XPS 10 (Windows RT) for $299 in the US.

For that matter, I can't see why you'd spend $300 on an Android tablet when this is only fractionally more, significantly more powerful and has double the storage.

      • I was under the impression that this is not RT but the full windows?

        • It is full windows - which is why Windows RT tablets are kinda pointless.

        • Is is full win 8

        • Tablets with no keyboard/mouse and full windows is still pretty rubbish. Everything is just a bit small to be user friendly. I have an Thinkpad 2 and mostly use the apps interface side of things. My desktop usage is completely the opposite, never touch the apps.

        • +2

Not everyone is like you. Some people find desktop mode without a keyboard/mouse very useful. Have you compared the metro version of OneNote to the desktop version?

It's also convenient to have the option of hooking up a bluetooth keyboard/mouse when you need desktop mode for heavier work. The rest of the time when you just want to surf the net or watch something, you don't need a keyboard/mouse.

      • cyssero, out of interest, Why do you have both the asus and the acer tablet? aren't they the same thing?

        • They are - they're practically identical. Only difference is as outlined in the OP. The Acer I will actually give to mum, have played with it a lot and it really is the same device at the end of the day. Was considering a very cheap Android tab but her familiarity with Windows and ability to just "do" things with it is a big advantage. And Office which is probably the biggest driver.

      • -1

Windows RT is only for ARM processors, not x86 machines.

        • -1

Do people really not understand what I meant?

Why have Windows RT tablets when Atom tablets running full Windows costs less, are just as fast if not faster, are the same size and weight, and can run way more software?

        • +3

You can run BlueStack, and then run Android Apps on your Windows Tablet if you wanted to.

        • Way more software - really? It doesn't run any Win32 applications. Not to mention that you're forced to use the WindowsStore. If you want something remotely decent get a proper Windows 8 tablet. RT is crippleware.

Do your research and stop getting offended!

        • -1

antler - kindly re-read my comment above.

    • Windows RT cant run on Atoms,

Anything Intel or AMD branded is Windows 8 and the Atoms are actually very well built for that they do and the battery they hold…

      • +1

Are there any AMD branded tablets? Or are you just generally speaking?

        • There was AMD ones back in the Windows days however that was just generally speaking, I would assume some might come out in the future however I personally don't know of any

  • i'm a bit confused by this device, the specs say it has the guts of a netbook, the form factor of a tablet and the price tag of a cheap notebook!

    • +2

These devices are fantastic. I have a Samsung ATIV 500T which is basically the same spec as this and the Acer that was on here recently. I ummed and arrred about getting one and wasn't sure if it would really be a device that would suit me.

All I can say is a was quite blown away by how good they perform for the general tasks I have use it for (Watching videos, office apps, browsing and various other general purpose apps.)

The processor in this is an Atom, and I think people assume that it's just like a netbook of old in terms of processing. In reality this Atom processor is in a different generation to the first Atom processors and they are really very capable for day to day tasks but these devices aren't going to be playing Battlefield 3 any time soon.

One thing I do find is that I really like having a keyboard dock. If you intend to do any real amount of typing it's almost a must (as with any other tablet really).

Edit - Also if you're unsure about Windows 8 this, in my opinion, is the perfect form factor for it. The gestures and 'metro' interface all make so much sense when they are put on to a device like this. Windows 8 has been give a fairly bad wrap in the press but beyond the initial learning curve the interface works really well.

  • I'm seriously considering buying this after seeing this, can anyone advise me if there's anything better for a similar price or if this is really a good deal? Don't really keep track of windows tablets.

    • +2

It's the second best deal on OzB for a Windows 8 tablet. It's only more expensive by about $10.

This is a really good deal. You won't find anything at the moment that compares (whether it's Windows RT or Android).

      • +8

And IMHO ASUS is a better brand than Acer so it'd be worth the $10. :)

        • Generally, but nothing beats a direct comparison. Already above is the issue with the charging port too close to the USB, bundle is not as good as the Acer, price difference is at least 15 bucks, these things add up.

what could be a game breaker is the price of the keyboard. Cheapest I can find for Acer is $150, definitely room there to square up the price.

        • From info I have heard the speed of the RAM in the Acers is better than the ASUS (Apparently I have not looked into it) and its has a noticeable impack on using it as a daily machine

        • I have both and I find the Acer has a better build quality and seems zippier when opening windows and apps as where the asus seems to lag just that little bit here and there but apart from that they are both good.

        • You have me thinking now. I have both and they really felt quite similar. Happy to run some benchmarks? Any suggestions? Might start with PassMark and see how it goes.

        • Windows rating on Acer is 3.3 and Asus is 3.2 and both are in gaming. Hdd score is 5.8 on the Asus and Acer is 5.4 lol but seems to take longer installing updates with the Asus so Im confused. Try DX Benchmark I think its like glbenchmark 2.5 for android.

        • The MMC in the ASUS may be better then. I'll try CrystalDisk too and see if there's anything substantially different.

        • Also I noticed the screen seems better quality on Acer than the Asus. Seems like in fast motion eg: windows metro the Acer has less blur than the Asus plus colours seems more natural too. I think Acer is my choice in the end.

  • Looks great - Office works have them for about $449 - i may test the waters at a price match, as this price is good, but a price a little better will help tip the decision to the buy side of things (then try to convince the wife it was a needed purchase). That may cost me more than the tablet alone :)

Oh - Any idea if this comes with the keyboard? it looks a little doggy i think given it dosen't connect to the tablet, but eh..

    • +1

Keyboard is not included. The Transleeve keyboard isnt cheap either. Last I saw they were $75

      • Just read a review, different kettle of fish to the Acer. W510 keyboard docks with the unit and extends battery life, this one is Bluetooth with seperate need to charge but cheaper. At least between the two you have the market covered.

Anyone know if the transleeve would fit a W510? Guessing the Acer keyboard definitely wouldn't fit this

        • I have the transleeve keyboard. You can also get it with the magnetic stand (which I recommend)
I picked it up at Harvey for $120, definitely not cheap, however performance wise, I definitely recommend. It is just a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse pad so it works with anything that has Bluetooth. Its not as good as a proper keyboard, but better than the onscreen keyboard. It is also turns the screen on and off when you open and close it and it makes it a very neat little package.

With regards to the ASUS tablet, best thing I have brought. It can run photoshop (the filters and things are slow as expected) and I have visual studio running on it. The best part about it is that i can leave it sitting in my bag still on for 3 days and it still has some battery left. Usage, it is quoted as 9hrs battery life, I have had at least 7 out of it.

  • can this device run java app like "Commseciress"?

    • +1

It runs what ever Windows 8 can run

    • Yes - it can run it. As brent3000 said, it can run anything your full PC can run, graphic intense games excluded.

  • I'll be getting this unless somebody can recommend me another full windows tablet that comes packaged with a GOOD keyboard, similar or better specs and lastly, around the same price point.

  • +1

Im also getting it, if there is not a better deal out there (or likely to be one in the near future).

Hate passing up good deals, but also happy to wait for a better deal if there could be one.

  • does it come with the MS keyboard like this one?
http://www.computeralliance.com.au/search?search=ASUS ME400C-1A032W 10.1" 64GB Vivo Tab Windows 8 Tablet BONUS MS Bluetooth Keyboard

    • I wouldn't assume so considering they are clearly different models. I do have that keyboard with my ASUS ME400C and it's a fantastic companion, but it is cheaper to buy the tablet and keyboard separately.

  • +1

Omg this is really cheap…i own one of this and would recommend this to others!!!

  • -1

I won one from a website..
It feels clunky compared to my nexus4…took a while to get used to. I feel like its trying to be too much.
Chrome is a bit buggy when using the touch keypad to enter details/passwords etc so its best to stick with IE on it shudder.
For streaming video and doing the odd email and light browsing its fine.
I got the keyboard attachment for it too. It took a while to figure out how to connect it as i thought it'd essentially be plug and play, but you need to pair the devices in windows.
I've actually sent mine to the service center as the touch screen stopped working after around 12hrs use.

    • +2

My atom tablet feels more responsive than my Nexus 10 or any of my other low-res Android tablets.
IE works very well, people just like hating on it for some reason.

      • Not hating on it, just providing my experience.
IE does work very well, a lot better than chrome on the tablet. However all my bookmarks are synced to chrome which isnt a massive issue but an annoyance.
For a smoother experience they need more native apps. Feels like it struggles with web apps.

      • IE touch does work well, however there are 2 issues:

        1. Making an alternate browser the default causes IE to default to the desktop version, which is annoying
        2. The desktop is a bit hard to finger through when the buttons are small, however this is the nature of having a multifunctional, you really probably should use a keyboard and touchpad
  • +1

Damn Local Officeworks, 20 mins trying to price match and they they said that the part number ended in 1A032W where theres was something different, so not the same model, cant price match.

    Arrhhhhhh!!

    • ah yeah, you've learned the hard way, some retailers(bigger ones anyway) sometimes stock identical items but with slightly different part/stock numbers solely to not give the pricematch discount!

    • +1

Sorry to hear mate. I had the run around with Officeworks and even though the models were identical the first store refused to listen (quite rudely). Second Officeworks I visited was more than happy and to top it all off had fantastic customer service as well. YMMV but I would try it.

The "W" in 1A032W could simply mean white, "B" would be black (you have the choice of colour). However, if it's substantially different e.g. IB022W it might be a stretch.

After a bit of searching, it looks like OW are just pulling a fast one on you as this model is very common and all major retailers have the same distributors: http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=ME400C-1A03…. JB HiFi, Bing Lee and others are all selling it. I would try again at another OW.

      • 2 months ago I bought one from OW at around $520, I like it, works perfectly. It can use Sandisk Ultra 64GB mrcro SDXC card. Just bought another one from OW at $375.25 for my wife. No problem at all, OW happily did price match.

    • I went to one OW, low stock but no stock. It was close so didn't really matter. Went to another one, spent ages talking to the sales person where she tried to find anything to stop the match. Eventually she refused to price match due to different part number no matter what I said about it being the same thing and Asus only selling one type of Vivotab Smart.

Will try again tomorrow at a different store though.

  • Anyone know how to find the deal from the actual site? I've tried calling office works to price match it and they can only find the $495 one that includes a keyboard.

    • It was sent via e-mail - try going in store with the URL?

  • I had to click through to the link from OzBargain to get it, i dont know why it dosent show up in search on the site.

I was thinking about printing it out and taking it to another store, hopefully they arent as picky with the model number difference.

  • +5

I went to the store and showed him the deal on my phone, refreshed it a few times so he'd know it was real and he still didn't believe me, so he made me type it out character by character on one of their laptops. When he saw it he still kept arguing about it. Well he lost and now i've got a brand new tablet:)

Your a Legend Romants - im going back to Office Works (different store to be safe) and showing the photo of your receipt to pick it up noooooow.

    • +2

Good luck, really hope you get it!:)

  • How is this one compare to Acer W510? I found Acer W510 has better quality built.

  • +2

Got one with the receipt posted here. Will check out this baby later tonight.

    • +1

      CONGRATULATIONS :)

  • Windows 8 runs GREAT on my old HP netbook. Throw in an SSD upgrade and it runs better than a lot of tablets, and it has a REAL keyboard!

Why pay for a new device if you have an old notebook/netbook laying around gathering dust?

    • +1

Agree with the fact Win8 runs excellent on old hardware (even works fantastic on my 6 year old notebook with 160GB SATA drive), but this is a different form factor with far better battery life. It weighs 580g, can be charged by any microUSB charger and gets 9+ hrs battery. It's under 10mm thick, too. It doesn't outright replace a notebook but it's definitely an excellent choice for traveling or using at work running between meetings, etc.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the internal SSD? 64gb is the only real annoying limitation that I can see.

    • +2

doesnt it support a microsd card? i guess thats the best way?

      • MicroSD is slow though, and generally limited to 64gb atm. In a time when 512gb SSDs are now common, I don't see why these models are handicapped as such.

        • The people these are marketed at don't need high-speed large storage. a 512GB SSD alone costs more than the tablet itself.

What would you store on it anyway, that requires high-speed storage?

        • It would be great for importing photos from my SLR whilst away from home/office, and some light editing in Lightroom.

With a full frame SLR, that 64gb with about 20gig usable will be gone in no time.

        • That doesn't require high-speed storage. You can double the capacity with a 64GB microsd. It's not designed for that sorta use anyway.

        • There's obviously no point trying to convince you, but other scenarios could easily include for example watching HD movies and TV shows. In this sense the tab is no better than my Samsung tabs with the same amount of storage.

If I'm carrying a bigger more high powered device at least make it properly usable.

  • I've been otherwise wanting to buy one of these Asus tabs - but don't think I can until I'm sure…

Will this solve this 'no simultaneous' usb charge issue? www.fasttech.com/products/1150/10000209/1025000-usb-af-to-am…

Anybody care to buy and try?

    • It may just work - I'll double check and if it looks possible I'll buy.

  • I just restarted and it's been updating for about an hour, is this normal for windws tablets? Says not to restart but I really want to.

    • It will tale a while and there are a lot of Store updates for the in built apps when you first turn it on. Very much a once off and updates are painless afterward. If let it do it's thing as you'll need to update it either now or later. There are also BIOS and driver updates from ASUS which you may want to put on from Live Update.

  • Thanks got price match today at officeworks watergardens vic. Wasnt going to do as it had to use link from ozbargain site 5hen had to check to ensure free postage. In the end i got one. $375.25
Having the print out of the receipts didnt help as he had to check web site

  • This one sell in JBHIFI for $481
    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/tablet/asus/10-64gb-wi-fi…

I was thinking to buy one of this to replace my laptop dead on yesterday. Can someone tell me is this device can work with external hard drive, mouse?

Is this price come with keyboard?

Can use for internet through 3g mobile network?

Most important, can this run on java app like CommsecIress?

    Thanks.

    • It'll work with an external hard drive, although I'm not sure if it can power it. A mains-powered external hard drive will be no problem of course.

There's only one USB port so you would need a USB hub if your mouse isn't bluetooth. You'll also need a USB OTG cable as it isn't supplied.

      e.g. http://www.usbonthego.com.au/micro-usb-otg-cable-black.html

Internet via 3G, sure, as long as you have a USB modem or pocket wifi device.

It'll run any app that runs on a normal laptop.
