The new Windows 8 architecture has meant to improve the way multitasking is handled. If many metro apps are open, there is generally no effect on switching between programs because they are suspended and do not take up the ram. Having said that, with the Atom processor, I find Metro App switching not 100% fluid but still excellent.

With many DESKTOP applications open, I find there is an impact on speed. MS Office, Excel, Metro IE8, Windows Mail, Photos will all run simultaneously without noticeable issue. When I start to open PDF's (large architectural plans) then you begin to see 1-5 second delays with app switching. Detailed pdfs also take a little time to render when scrolling through pages. I don't find the performance reduction restrictive for my needs.

1080p videos are output at full resolution to the destination (have tested Acer > Onkyo amp > Samsung TV). Can not confirm if bitstreaming HD audio is possible as I use other devices for this.

  • so anyone can upload their officeworks receipt? OW might don't price match to JB but they shall will do the same price as other OW right?

    • I think what you are trying to say is 'Please upload Officeworks price matched receipt so we can go to other OWs and price match.

      • I also price matched. Make sure your price matching the NON office bundle version. JB sells both, office bundle is $100 more.

    • +2

I price matched at my local office works - but I checked the stock model number matched JB's NT.L0KSA.001
Here is my receipt http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/30384/16300/w510_price_… ($365
.56) This thing is WELL worth that price IMHO! can't wait to get it home.

  • NO probs with price match at OW at the Penrith (NSW) store.

    • Also no problems at Clarence St Sydney, guys saw me coming, had 4 yesterday, I got the 3rd, one left at 1:30pm

  • My Mrs is begging me to buy her an Ipad Mini as we are about to embark on a 3 months of travels, personally I cannot see any value in them. My question is, how can I convince her that one of these badboys are superior and cheaper?

    • -1

No, iPad mini/iPad will be a better travel/life companion, this one is only if you want to use it to do some work while travelling

    • That depends on what she wants to do. What will she use it for?

    • In my opinion this is a far better option. Granted its slightly larger than an ipad mini, however remember it has the ability to do pretty much anything that any standard windows computer can do. Battery life is amazing at at least 8 hours for something so small and that can do so much

I own a Asus Vivotab smart which has near identical specs, and I find myself using it more than my macbook pro laptop. Granted its not super quick, but for browsing the internet, checking emails, watching movies etc.. and some light MS office work it performs flawlessly. For $365 this is an absolute steal.

I'm almost tempted to buy another one, hooking it up to my flatscreen via hdmi with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and using as a media centre with a usb hub and my hard drives hooked up. Can ultimately make my tv a SUPER smart tv better than any android version for not a huge amount more than the android equivalent, and can pick it up and use it out and about whenever i fancy

Essential accesories would be a micro usb (male) to standard usb (female) so you can plug in pen drives etc… plus a micro hdmi adapter. I also highly recomend the microsoft wedge keyboard and stand that could be a better and cheaper dock option if youre not too fussed about the extra usb and battery life. These things last at least 8 hours on their own by the way

      • Guys - I can confirm it comes with micro usb (male) to standard USB (female) & a microHDMI (male) to VGA (female) adapter in the box as standard which is great.

Also comes with a nice folio pouch/case to keep it protected … would have been nice if the case acted as a stand, but I don't think Apple would like that much :-)

        • it does work as a stand… stare at it harder.

    • I thought about this for a long time.

      Positives:
      -single device for most people
-great battery life esp with the kboard, and its a decent option
-runs all Win apps, this is a big one for many ppl and the reason why they can't have just one device
-Much better for any real work

      Negatives:
-Doesn't have anywhere near as big a touch app eco system as IOS or Android
-bit heavier and less sexy (but really who cares?
-bit more costly than some Androids, but still a damn sight cheaper than iPads

I think if any of the positives speak to you, this is your device (or your wife's).

  • Can anyone confirm whether PokerStars run ok on this tablet?

  • Hows the hunt for a bargain dock coming? BH have it for $120 + $45 shipping… http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/903248-REG/acer_np_dck…

    • Acer stand in Bondi Junction Westfield agreed to sell for $150, haven't taken the plunge yet

      • Acer stand, they have it in stock?? Where abouts is that located.

  • Ended up cancelling my order with jb and calling the office works hotline. They were happy to price match at 10am this morning and delivery to my work bu the arvo… Kinda glad I looked it to more as I saved myself 5% and got it today instead of waiting… Many cold mites to come of enjoyment on this little beauty! :@)

  • Excellent deal! Just ordered two! Hopefully the atom processors are reasonably decent..

  • ended up getting one at OW with a price match.. no issues..

OW online has the dock for $169… not sure if they charge or delivery but i believe you can order and pickup in store..

anyone in melbourne interested in ordering from OS and combining shipping?

    • Delivery is free.

  • OW has stock but its online only..

  • +2

Bought one from JB online, would liked to have saved another $20 by going to Officeworks but can't be stuffed going in store to convince them to honor their 5% for $20. The manager at the store nearest to me is an ass so for $20 ill give my money to JB that I can walk over the road during work and pickup :)…

Looking forward to having a play with it, going to use SCCM 2012 to deploy our standard SOE on to it, if it goes well we might buy a dozen :)

    • In my case I cancelled my order with jb as there is no same day pick up in Brisbane. Then went to OW and the staff agreed to beat the price when I showed him the jb ad on my phone. When he came back with the tablet he changed his mind saying that OW item is different. Apparently the box says iconia w5, and has got the picture of the keyboard dock. Finally I managed to convince him but even after I paid he still kept saying that OW version is different :)

Lucky last week I went to OW in the cbd and got rejected, at that time I tried to price match when OW price was $538 and jb was $481.

  • so if anyone (pref in melb) wants to order a keyboard/dock together, the cheapest price i can find is $271.56USD shipped for two, so $135.78USD per unit..

    • no longer available..

    • Where did you find that price? Anyone in Sydney wanna do this?

  • Does DXVA2 mode in xbmc work on this for anyone else? I get huge blocky playback problems which some quick googling seems unavoidable.

    • I had DXVA working in Laavi's splitter I believe, I'll check when I'm back home. Smooth 1080p playback.

      • Laavi's splitter??

        • Oops :) LAV's filter, not splitter. A portmanteau of Haali and LAV perhaps?

DXVA2 copy-back works and is available to me: http://imgur.com/z1PAbGt

I'm using Shark's codec pack for Windows 8. No issues/conflicts and solid settings application.

        • So do we need LAV's Filter or Shark's codec pack?

        • Shark's codec pack includes LAV's filter and a settings application to allow you to choose this. Follow the link above for Shark's codec pack on Win8 and use the settings application to configure DXVA as per my screenshot.

        • Thanks. Are you sure there weren't any other steps you did to get it working? I have configured it like the screenshot but in XBMC it hasn't changed. Maybe I have to enable it somehow in XBMC?

        • After some googling it seems XBMC will only use its internal codecs.

        • Yes, I should have mentioned I wasn't using XBMC, rather Windows Media Player and it should work in the Windows Media Center add-on and MPC-HC too.

    • I disabled DXVA2 in XBMC and videos play now, slight voice lag.

  • +1

yeah same deal… that sucks..haven't played enough to see if xbmc works enough good without dxva2 mode off.. what media player are you going to use then?

    • Hmmmm now there's a thought to load Xbmc ;@)

  • Dunno if anyone's interested but your not too concerned about have the original dock, buy this http://m.thehut.com/computing/keyboard-mice/motorola-bluetoo… it's approx $22Aud with 99p postage. Had one of these for my Motorola Xoom and its perfect size for on the go! Use code 'TECH' for 10% off.

  • For anyone that was wondering, I have not experienced any visual lag of any sorts that annoyed me. Works perfect, you will just notice you can't do certain high level computational things at once like transfer a large file and install a program. That's about it.

  • Found the original dock at iibuy for $160.55
Pick up free in Sydney CBD or $8.95 postage
    http://www.iibuy.com.au/acer-iconia-tab-keyboard-dock-with-2…

  • looks like the price is back to $481 again now

  • Pissed that i waited to long to pull the trigger was on my way to officeworks today and checked the site and price back up. I hate being a tightarse

  • Anyone found a screen protector locally? I have found it impossible here in Adelaide

  • anyone found keyboard/touch pad that comes with a case/stand that fits this? seems to be plenty around for android tablets..

    • The Microsoft Wedge Mobile does a great job, the keyboard's stand itself doubles as a tablet stand. Very, very nice keyboard to type on.

  • Anyone else having an issue applying for their $89 cash back? My SKU says no, the part number matches and its on the AU site. I have emailed them to check why its not showing in their database.

    http://ec3.acer.com.au/AcerCashBack/ACA/Projects/CashBack/Lo…

    • Probably won't be eligible. The $100 eGift voucher also cannot be used anymore.

  • hotzone, let us know if you hear back from acer about the cash back

    • They reckon its only available in NZ, considering its on the AU domain and not on the NZ domain I have my BS meter hitting 100% so I have asked them why its not on the NZ cash back site then and only on the Australian one? And if its a mistake, why hasn't it been fixed since they have known about it for a week as someone previous to me notified them as well.

      • Any update?

        • Still waiting for communication from them. I have had it escalated to the cash backs manager. Was supposed to get a decision today but they are pretty slow at Acer to say the least.

  • anyone have any luck with the original keyboard dock under $169??
