Exynos 7" tab for $88

THL W8 Quad Core phone ($116)
http://dx.com/p/thl-w8-android-4-1-quad-core-bar-phone-w-5-0…

Update:

http://dx.com/mayhalfprice?utm_source=dx&utm_medium=cdn&utm_…

According to this, they will be rotating the deals throughout the day (800 SKUs with total quantity of 40,000) to cover a bunch of other products too. Check back whenever you can to see if theres anything new!

Update 2:

http://dx.com/mayhalfprice/Default/ShoppingList

They have pushed out another list of more items! It does verify the theory that the initial page was for DX AU deliveries whilst this is the International 50% off section. Please be aware that there will be longer delivery times for this since it needs to be shipped directly from China as opposed to the DX AU (which apparently has warehouse in Perth).

Update 3:
Offer is pretty much officially "Ozbargained" with the only remaining stock to be either very specialist products (Spare battery for product x), Seasonal products (Christmas), or stuff that not many people want. The only thing I am hoping for is that they can fulfill all orders so everyone is happy.

DX has subtly stated however, (Broken English) "If the customers who participate in this activity are more than expected which results in lack of product supply, we have to process refund for the oversold items, please kindly understand." which may account for some people's Paypals reported refunded against.

Update 4:

Have to apologise in advance to anyone who doesnt get the stock for this deal. Despite being the OP and putting the order through before others, I have now received a cancellation against my two orders (W8 and PD10). It is seemingly like a lottery to get stock. Very very disappointed. :(

Update 5:

After a disappointing weekend, DX has now come back to affected customers with a voucher that's worth 15% of the original total order. So, if your order was $200, then they will give you back $30 worth as a rebate in compensation to be used in DX. Apparently the stock is still available - but not it has changed to a different SKU but they are offering 15% off the original price. This is pretty beneficial if your original order was expensive (and hence you can get back a higher rebate value) - but typically most would only have done a $200 order with $30 rebated.

The new link is here: http://dx.com/l/au-direct/2013-02/special-items.aspx

As you can see, the deal is nowhere near as good as before. However, it is up to you as an individual to see if it is still good value enough to continue making the purchases.

      • Thanks done, but no possibility of cyanogen mod??

        • Not that I've seen. The phone is really not popular enough. Gravitymod2 is very stable and very active (another update yesterday)

  • So you happy people that received your PD80-HD, I'm curious, were you first time DX customers or existing?

I was a customer since 2007, ordered early in the morning, and was cancelled.
Referred someone else, first time customer who ordered in the afternoon, and was delivered. (and yes, I'm pretty dark about that..)

    • Yeah even I'm trying to figure out a pattern to which orders they cancelled and which they didn't.

I too have been a customer of theirs for a while, ordered in the morning, talked to a couple of people on chat multiple times. So I'm cutting out 'time of day' and 'talking to the people on chat' as variables for cancellation. Not so sure about 'being a prior customer'.

The only things that have stood for me maybe is the fact that people who ordered only 1 item via AUDirect Sale have had their order fulfilled. I also wonder if 'type of payment' had any influence.

I only ordered the PD80HD and paid via Paypal (bank transfer) so no additional verification was asked for.

      But who knows, eh ?!

    • First time customer. Paid for it at about 4am on the morning via Paypal. Only item I ordered. Didn't chat with them until about day 4 or 5. Received it yesterday.

      • got mine yesterday

only item I ordered. paid by paypal (direct deposit) no checks required.

        dx customer since forever

        • So basically, who knows how they decided which to cancel or not..

On a side note, had a play with my friends tablet that didn't get cancelled, great bargain at $110. Though noticed max CPU speed it will scale to is 1GHz. Wasn't it supposed to be 1.4GHz?

With my "gift card" would come down to ~$166 after current discount.. not too bad, but don't really want to give DX any more of my business though.

Have been thinking about getting a Rockchip 3188 based retina (or possibly full HD widescreen) with bluetooth instead. Anyone got one and can comment?

        • Why don't you just get the Nexus 7 for $20 more?

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/104978

        • +2

Because 9.7" ,Retina Display, Expandable memory, HDMI output which Nexus 7 doesn't have.

        • What fchis said.. 7" and 9.7/10.1" tablets not quite the same thing..

      • Customer since at least 2011 and paid via Paypal. Onlt 1 item (THL W8) ordered. Chatted twice. Received it 11:30-ish today. :)

  • Got my Ditter V12 DOA today.. it keeps crashing, anyone else having this issue? I boot up, sometimes it will last a few minutes, and then crash constantly in a loop.

    Found this thread:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/79601?page=1

Seems to explain the same issue as parker2004au

    • +1

Changed power supply.. seems to have resolved the issues

      • You're lucky, yours was only DOA, mine is still MIA…I'm organising for Chuck Norris to storm DX to liberate it! ;)

  • Hi all

Has anyone been using the W8 with a one-button mic/headset
I'm getting a very low volume and when pressing the button increases the volume to normal, but otherwise doesnt do the usual stuff (pause/skip)

At first I though it was an issue with the Gravity2 ROM, due to being jelly bean, but now seems that the headjack is not the right type (OMTP vs CTIA)

could anyone confirm how it's working with mic/button(s) headsets?
I'm goign to try with an IPhone branded one back home and a regular one

    Cheers

    • doesnt anyone uses a button/mic headset with the W8?
I have gone around googling and seems like the headphone jack is not the usual standard, which would need an adaptor (which is hard to find)
      mayor turn off

      • I know there was a forum that people were listing headsets that worked or didn't with the W8…… just gotta find it.

P.S Volume settings for headset can be modified in MTK Engineer mode (##3646633##) is the code i think :)

        • Thanks for the engineer mode tip,
sadly it doesnt resolve the button/mic situation, which is a shame due to owing two "incompatible" and very expensive headsets :(

  • I got my THL W8 phone yesterday. However, the text in the box states the camera is 8MP one, not 12MP. I haven't opened the box yet. Just wondering if I am the only one who received the wrong item?

    • Do install antutu benchmark, then it will tell you the camera actually 12mp for front, and 5mp for rear.

      Hope that help.

      • Hi quicksion. Are you suggesting I should ignore the text on the box and just find out myself? I haven't opened the box since I am thinking maybe I need to have it replaced.

        • Open it up! It's the right device. its 12 MP by interpolation.

        • thanks you guys! I opened it up, you are right! It's 12MP. This phone is a beast! Very happy now.

        • -1

No its not interpolation. If you dont have this phone (which you are still whinging about), then dont misinform.

I can verify that the W8 is not 12M by Interpolation. I can also state that the quality is probably better than my Galaxy Note and almost matches my old Nokia N8 (missing only the Xenon flash).

        • I'm not whinging, i never even tried ordering this phone..

Someone forgot to take their afternoon nap

        • -1

don't have to be a bch about it…

Anyone know a good media player for the PD80-HD?
Also how to root it to get rid of the Chinese apps?

    • +3

MX Player is by far the best for Video! :D

    • Its already rooted. Good idea to grab SuperSU from play store to control root access.
I like MoboPlayer, but play store will say tab is incompatible, need to grab the apk from http://www.moboplayer.com/moboplayer_en.html

  • Got my faucet delivered today from the original 50% off deal. The external phone battery charger which I got for $2.50 after the voucher was also delivered last Monday (though I missed it and will be re-delivered tomorrow). My pd10hd and w8 orders were cancelled but they were just impulse buys anyway as I already have nexus 4 & 10. So overall, got a pretty decent deal :-).

  • So not being an Android person…

Can anyone recommend what to chuck on the PD80 tablet?

    Cheers,
    Jake

    • +1

  • Received my W8 via Toll today. Currently charging it up now… going to root and apply custom rom tonight.
Just found out THL stands for Technology. Happy. Life.

  • Just received my PD10-HD. Great little unit. Screen is sharp however it does have a slight screen flicker… not too fussed (at the moment) as it was only 90~.

Running 4.0.4 ICS which is a little weird… The OS is super smooth though I wonder if there is a way to upgrade… CM10 would be awesome.

All in all, great for the price.

    • The odd screen glitch / flicker is common with the Hyundai t7. A little annoying but it's only every now and then. I believe people are installing cleanRom for the Hyundai t7s from slatedroid on their pd10hd.

  • Got my PD80 yesterday. Apart from driving 2 hours to the wrong pickup depot, product looks good at first glance. Strange thing is it was on when i opened the box which was sealed with the QA stickers. Still had 70% battery though so I hope that's a good sign for how long the battery lasts in standby. Played a HD video on it, screen looks great.

  • i got my pd80 today but the screen is damaged on arrival….

does anyone know how much it costs to pay for shipping to hx and back? I have a massive black rectangle in the middle of my screen….

  • PD80 arrived today. great stuff.
Screen display is nice and sharp.
The speed is faster than the RK3066 for sure. Wifi is not stable at times. Build quality is good for the money. Overall, worth every penny.

    Thanks OP!

  • Got the PD30 delivered today…perfect timing with our Jacobs Creek mystery flight this weekend :D

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/85335

Newb question…the PD30 charger has the following specs:

    Input 100 / 240 volt - 50/60hz 0.5 A
    Output 5v…2A

I have another charger (micro USB connection) with the following specs:

    Input 100 / 240 volt - 50/60hz 0.3 A
    Output 5v…1.5A

Can I use this charger with the PD30 via the micro USB connection?

    • +1

You can charge it via the USB as long you turn it off.

      • Cheers mate…out of interest, why does it have to be off?

        • +1

Because the USB supplied power is very little. Even when it is turned off, it will take a much longer time to charge.

        • Thanks guys :D

  • +2

My pd80's adobe flash player isn't working so can't watch YouTube. Anyone has the same issue?

Edit: never mind, i fix it by installing this version of youtube APK

    http://www.androiddrawer.com/6750/download-youtube-4-1-23-ap…

    • Woop, thanks :)

This was my only issue with the ROM, now I don't need to bother flashing with something else, although rooting it would be good.

      • You're welcome.

  • rooted w8, upgraded to latest rom. My phone got the unfortunate "obtaining ip address" error which I still havent been able to fix… Otherwise its a great phone!

  • -2

Fixed my tablet, overlooked the tiniest detail :P

This screen, wowzer. Absolutely love it!

I installed CM10 from the Slatedroid thread and it's still a little sluggish, hopefully there's more work or a 10.1 CM made for it :D

I'll be using it for media so it's gonna be awesome :)

    • Is it the general feel that is sluggish or something in particular (typing) ? Apparently, SwiftKey fixes the keyboard sluggishness.

      • -2

Just when going through the menu's/app drawer etc.

I've just noticed for some reason my internal storage isn't showing up now on CM10, will investigate further stomps off

    • Is there a newbie thread for CM10? I am new to this whole flash thing and don't understand slatedroid :S. The wifi is so bad that I need to flash it.

      • +3

I'm as much as newbie as you mtjz. This is what I understand from it the two threads I've read.

        a) Download TWRP (Chuwi v10 version apparently) and put it on the internal storage of the tablet.

        b) Download 'Terminal Emulator' from the app store.

        c) In Terminal emulator, first type 'su' to get root access.

        d) Type in the 2 lines mentioned by OP in this TWRP thread

        e) Go to settings and reboot in recovery mode.

        f) Meanwhile, on a computer or wherever, download the 3 zipped files (CM10, gapps and PD80 compatibility zip) mentioned in the CM10 thread and put it on an external SD card.

        g) The reboot in recovery mode will load up TWRP. It might seems unresponsive but give it a few minutes or more. I just lock my tablet with the power button and wait for the 'slide to unlock' to be responsive.

        h) Go to 'Wipe' menu and do a 'Factory Reset'

        i) Go to 'Install' and select from 'external SD card' or something like, flash ROM, then flash gapps and the compatibility zip.

        j) Finally, reboot.

I've only installed TWRP successfully, don't have an external SD card to try flashing CM10. Tried it with a USB OTG cable but didn't work.

        • Thanks.

        • Thanks, though I can't even get my wifi to work as a start. :(
Standing next to the router and it still doesn't connect

        • Have you tried restarting the device ? Happened to me too, switched the device off and back on again, same spatial location and voila, network appeared :)

        • Yes I've done that too many times now. It can detect the signal but I am never able to connect. I just did a factory reset so hopefully it will make some difference.

        • Thanks for the step-by-step rohanp16!

Some more newbie questions, but what are the advantages of flashing CM10? From comments it seems to help with WiFi but what else? And what is the risk of bricking it?

        • Pleasure ! Haven't tried it myself, but the instructions on that site seem to say so :)

AFAIK CM10 ROM is faster, gives more customization options, better battery life (lower clock speed) and of course remove the bloatware (those extra apps in the stock ROM). But it depends from device to device. Try the updated stock ROM provided by someone earlier in the thread, then try the CM10 and see which works for you :)

Hahaha I have no idea about the risk of bricking it. In my head, if something does go wrong with flashing the CM10 ROM, I can always go back to the firmware from that website !

        • how is wifi signal strength after you flashed CM10? is it better and more stable?

        • +1

Just to update people following the instructions above, you ARE able to flash the roms from internal storage. Make sure to go to Mount and 'Mount Data' and maybe 'System' too (?). Then go to 'Install' and the 3 zipped files should be under /emmc folder (internal storage folder). Thanks to Christian for pointing that out, what a genius !

        • .

        • How long exactly was the screen unresponsive on TWRP for you guys? After no response after an hour I rebooted and went into recovery again but same issue. And screen doesn't turn off but just turns black (still has a glow).

Anyway I'm going to try again tmrw, maybe I'll try the spark version even though everyone has been using Chuwi

        • It was unresponsive for maybe 2-3 minutes for me. I just press the power button once to turn the screen 'off', not a black background glow. And then it says 'Slide to Unlock', wasn't responding at first, but happened after a few minutes.

        • Just noticed something on the CM10 thread. The compatibility zip is based on v2.0 firmware. However, I'm not sure if our firmware was upgraded to firmware 2.0 before it was shipped out.

It might be a good idea to install the firmware mentioned here and then follow the steps above to install CM10.

I don't have a Windows OS to run the firmware so haven't tried it myself, but will try soon. CM10 is working good, bit sluggish and battery life has been quite bad as someone mentioned below. Not as bad as an hour, but significantly lesser than when it was on stock ROM.

        • So I had no luck with Chuwi, but Spark version worked 1st time.

Was going to update the firmware from that Chinese site but got scared when running the msi and Windows warned that the drivers were not from a trusted source and could be harmful.

Haven't played around much with cm10 yet but a bit annoyed that having bought SwiftKey for phone I don't get the tablet version

        • I had trouble with my router. my router has a possible fault external wps button. had to log in on my pc to the router through the ip address (168.100.0.1 or something like that). soft pressed WPS and tablet connected to wifi immediately :)

  • +1

Got my Freelander PD80-HD, impressed so far.

  • Got mine as well. Very impressed. Anyone got ideas for a case? I wish it had bluetooth though.

  • Ditter V12; does anyone know if there are any 3rd party ROMs functioning for this device ?

and pretty much the same question for the Freelander PD30.

I have tried searching but sadly wasnt able to get any meaningful information.

    Thanks in advance

    • Same here, been trying to root it all week but can't find actual "rk30sdk" drivers that work.

  • Small overview of my first impressions of the Freelander PD80-HD tablet

    Negs
    - Some slight touchscreen delays/alignment in a few apps
    - battery life (not good - I will wait a few cycles)
    - Some annoying Chinese apps (easily removed)
    - Awful Wifi connection (really really bad!)
    - Lack of CM10 options ATM (lack of rocker switch)

Its chewing through its battery - from fully charged to flat in under 60 minutes - with web use only (wifi on). The Battery % was dropping when in use ie 1 sec each 1% when being used- not so good! I read elsewhere that this happened to someone else.

    Pro
    - $116 is a pretty impressive price point
    - Excellent screen resolution
    - Lightweight
    - Seems to run graphic intensive games ok

I can live with the Wifi , but the battery if an ongoing issue is a killer.

    One hour use is hopeless.

    • Nice review.. Battery on mine is much much better now after few cycles… Wifi was absolutely crap on mine as well, I wasn't even able to connect to wifi automatically even when I was sitting next to router, I had to go in settings and connect is manually and was getting connected after few tries only.. But yesterday I completely fixed wifi issue on mine and now its running like a dream, getting full signal on it throughout my house and now its connected automatically (as it should) all the time .. The fix I did is just changed channel on my router, set it to lower number than before and problem solved, you can try it to see if it fixes your issue as well..

      • Delay in opening apps or scrolling are still the main issues. We need a more stable firmware. I was expecting jelly bean would have fixed everything.

        • +1

PS, I found the stock browser works the best among Firefox, opera and dolphin.

      • Have same battery problem. Funny thing is I've just recharged up to 100% and 5 minutes of usage later the battery is only 84%. So annoying :(

    • Which Chinese apps you removed? I have disabled 'HiMarket', how can I completely remove it? I'm new to android.. Looks like mine is already rooted i think..

      • +1

get titanium backup. it can remove whatever you dont want.

actualy link2sd can uninstall them too.

    • about the awful wifi, someone suggested that you can change the channel of you wifi in the setting of your router. i tried. it does work like a charm:D))))))

i used channel 6 and changed it to channel 1 this morning….MAGIC!!!!!

also, many ppl installed CM10 on this tablet. i will do the same tonight.

      • Glad it worked for you as well, I posted it above and on WP as well..

Let us know if you can successfully install CM10 or not. If possible, please let me know steps involved it it..

        • lol

i installed cm10 last night. in short, so far so good.

the apps did crash once (all the running ones). i rebooted the tablet, then everything was back to normal.

in my case, the battery life is as good as i expected.

i do notice one dead pixel near one corner…well, just bad luck.

cm10 is far sleeker than the stock rom.

the keyboard is a little big laggy (it is hard to describe, check the original thread by crhistian troy)
          here is the link:
          http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/65290-rom-cyanogenmod-10-for…

i follow the steps someone summarised here page 20 or 21. one word: easy! have a try :)

      • I am also having terrible trouble with the wifi, sorry novice question. How do you change the channel on the router for wifi??

  • +1

I changed the default Ditter V12 launcher to the free Apex one - Turned off all the screen transitions and effects, changed it to Tablet mode; performance is really good now.

  • Yep, got my $30 Freelander 7" tablet a couple of days ago, works great. Still waiting on the rest of the order though.

  • Hey guys, I just received my PD80. It seemed good at first glance, but I have been experiencing some lag especially while playing a game. I did an AnTuTu benchmark and found the score to be 10438 with the following breakdown:

    CPU: 4506
    GPU: 3683
    1008 MHz (x4) [1536 x 1952]
    RAM: 1431
    I/O: 818

This was done without and micro-SD card in it. I would really appreciate it if someone else could perform this benchmark without a micro-SD card in it so that I can compare the values. Saw someone on YouTube having a score of 12099 but with the SD card in it. Are the numbers in the square brackets the resolution?

I would appreciate any help in this matter. Thank you very much guys.

    • My benchmark score of PD80 is about the same as yours which is about right. The laggish behaviour is caused by the Android 4.1.1 stability/compatibility with this device which is almost nothing to do with the hardware. I installed advanced task killer and move 2 sd apps which help to speed things up a little bit. Mind you, i've owned some android tablets in the past and they all have the same fate after using them for a while: please don't expect it to act silky smooth like the Ipad and you may feel heaps better. If you want better Android tablet experiences, Nexus tablets are the way to go or by trying some different ROMs for your device (which may or may not work). But for the price I paid, I am satisfied. Just my 2 cents.

      • agree. ipad is really smooth, actually so is the iphone.

        • Pity the iPhone 5 is such a shit phone for calls though…

    • Really.. the Allwinner A31 is a nice chip - but not really made for these resolutions (hence why I preferred the PD10HD as per my OP.). I wouldnt be surprised if they had to mod the base Android codes to allow for anything more than 1080p realistically to get this working hence why there are a lack of optimisations for this high resolution.

  • I had CM10 working well on my PD80 thanks to everyone's help and tips - however after a reboot my WiFi is no longer turning on. Not a problem with signal, I can't even get the WiFi to turn on and search for available networks.

Anyone with any ideas how to fix this?

    • no problem with my pd80hd. maybe reinstall the rom?

      • Tried just reinstalling rom but didn't help. A factory reset did the job though.

    • Thinking about installing CM10, but am pretty happy with stock since removing all the crap ware. Is it more responsive?

      • +1

I didn't play around with the stock rom much so I'm not sure if it's actually much better, especially if you've removed the crapware. I've found CM10 very nice to use, but don't expect to be silky smooth.

        • I might just wait a little longer for a more polished rom

        • Btw, one thing I've found is that my tablet with CM10 charges great from usb (same rate if not faster than the power supply). Didn't try usb charging mine on stock, but I know my friend's one doesn't.

  • Has anyone who ordered an MK808B (SKU 175870) had their order shipped yet? Mine is still on back order.
